Weird how many people seem to think a videogame is just plot and art and that the actual play experience and mechanics, the Game of the game, is sorta a perfunctory nuisance. Maybe that's what bad AAA low-friction design trains it's audience for.

It's uncanny. Something about the level of image compression and the bright flat lighting (and reflections on the car) feels like a 90s pre-rendered background. I remember sometimes as a kid undulating dark lake-water would have a "CGI" look (all shiny and blobby and opaque)

People talk about Kojima just being a hack who couldn't get into movies, but honestly he just seems like a guy who made the best of working in a different medium like Yoshiyuki Tomino and Shinichiro Watanabe. Both wanted to make live-action movies but ended up making great shows.

The sense I get is that rpg romances tend to be, like so much of games, geared towards player fantasy. Content on to access. Content to beat. Metagame. Not organic feeling, emotionally convincing dramatic developments from diegetic choices made in character.
