For esp. men who don't understand: try putting yourself in the player's shoes here. You've just gone 4-0, you're on stream. You worked very hard on your team. When you finish stream, the comments you see are not "he played so well" or "i loved his team," they're...
Why, at this point, do we not have the ability to black-box save game states for very important (elimination) games? Like, why can we not flash-save the game state every turn, and then (maybe) load it back up if there's a disconnection/someone knocks a switch out of a dock/w/e?
Last weekend was crazy. I still can't quite believe that I ended up winning the regional. I want to make a brief thread sharing the team that
@45mice
and I worked on and spreading some gratitude. First, a rental:
"wow, he's so hot," "I have a crush on him," or even worse "how do I get in bed with him!??!". You go to a tournament to be a player, and the comments online turn you into a Thing to be Enjoyed. I guess some people might like that sort of thing, but suffice to say many don't.
And what's worse, those comments are all made by people who don't even *know* you! There are contexts where expressing this sort of thing is reasonable (and ofc people are going to find others attractive), but a pokemon tournament isn't a bar. People there are players first.
A few people have been asking about my Baltimore team, so!
First: it's
@___yotam___
's team, not mine. I just put Flamigo on it.
Second: here's the rental and paste:
If you try the team, experiment a bit with the amoonguss item!
Tier list after the first day of the limitless tour today!
Pretty much every pokemon is defined by their interactions with Gholdengo & Dondozo, but the Gholdengo strategies seem clearly better.
I've said this a bit in private, but I am starting to believe that the defining skill of regulation G is your ability to play well in questionable matchups (rather than your ability to identify the right team for the meta you're going into)
Finished 9-5 in Hartford. I'm happy that I've kept the day 2 streak alive, but really disappointed in how I played day 2 -- I didn't do the squad justice! Speaking of the squad...
With Justin's amazing 10-4 finish at EUIC (unbelievable back to back runs), I think it's finally time for me to share the church Tusk rental.
These are the spreads and Pokemon from Charlotte regionals -- not quite reg c ready (Flutter should probably be faster than timid Chi)
I feel the worlds panic. Not everyone's team is working, people are anxious or scared or excited... and hey, my team isn't really working either! But man, it has been such a privilege to play the Bo3 ladder these last few days. Everyone is *so* good. I'm learning so much.
People say Pokemon is like chess, but in fact, chess is also like Pokemon -- except you are only allowed to play the same complex balance mirror every game, and one of you always gets lucky on turn 1 (goes first). 🥸
Ok, this tweet has inspired me to do some storytelling about 2015 nationals -- namely, how Politoed was perfect for that tournament and only that tournament. Buckle in! 🧵🧵🧵
@JustMrBurns
i feel like a lot of people show up to vgc with stars in their eyes from pachi / some self-worth from being a inherently creative person
but the truth of the matter is that to succeed with “wacky” pokemon in vgc is so monumentally hard and your success isn’t guaranteed
Ahhh... finally able to tweet about it. This weekend was so *full* -- full of faces, full of experiences, full of a lot of Pokémon. I'm so grateful to meet new friends, explore new ideas, and continue to develop as a player.
Worlds is done, and I had so much fun pushing myself in day 1 against great players and watching others shine in day 2! I wanted to share the team I built for the event. The nicknames are (mostly) alts I used throughout the year.
This was where I stopped about two hours ago! The team was super rough (one of the mons didn't really work, so I ended up only really bringing 5) and I had to make a bunch of bizarro plays to make up for it. I was about to settle for t128, but when you're on a streak...
As someone who typically cannot go to more than one international because of literally travel expenses; why do we need to do this? Why not just bfl 4 or 5 regs/bfl 1 or 2 internats? With fixed invites, everyone without funds will be scraping the barrel for places 50-75...
Ah...
NAIC was wonderful for a lot of reasons. I got to see friends; got to watch great Pokemon; and I got to meet some people for the first time.
Me, Carris, Yotam, Kazuki, and a few others worked on an Orthworm team for the event. I spent the past month relentlessly refining.
I've looked at many of raghav's spreads -- they always, usually by accident, hit extremely specific benchmarks for survivals/damage rolls/etc, but raghav always just "used sliders." They are too biased from looking at good spreads all the time, please put effort in yourself 😅
I know that if community members were able to, they would. If we were allowed to futz with Pokémon code, it would surely be done within a year... and such a functionality would, of course, naturally let us archive elimination games from every major tournament.
I'm really excited to play in Toronto. However, I have in fact discovered an autoloss for the team I'm playing. No, it isn't psyspam. Yes, we are just dodging it
Finished t64 at worlds. I was never really going to be able to fight for t32 after the r1 loss. I'm happy with the team I brought, proud of my friends, and looking forward to the next attempt I get at an international to finally finish well :)
Really really disappointed in myself. Felt like I didn't respect my last opponent with how poorly I played, basically just handed over chances in what should have been more even board states. Nothing quite like losing entirely to your own mistakes 🥲
I don't really know what to say. I had no idea while I was playing day 2 today. I guess that's the best thing I could have been doing to celebrate Angel; I don't know. I wish I could have at least said goodbye.
Personally, it is... really heartbreaking to have blown two opportunities at Knoxville and Orlando at a championship and then lose out at Charlotte. But as a supporter? Sick to see the team win. Even sicker to see Justin be the one to do it. On to reg C 🫡
Schedule from the weekend! Missing Wyatt Clark r1. I'll make a longer thread later... I definitely got pretty lucky and I have so many people to thank ❤️
Never mind disconnections in worlds top 16... although that is a tragedy for the competitive integrity of our game. We should be able to safeguard against this kind of problem forever going forward, and we should be able to see the history of our game.
Finished 3/647 at Baltimore!!! Still super overwhelmed with joy and excitement from yesterday 🥺🥺🥺🥺 I watched the twitch VOD and found sooooo many people were showing great support for me. I've never felt so loved and I can't express in words how much I appreciate it. (1/?)
As some have noticed -- I qualified for worlds! It feels pretty nice to get another worlds invitation 7 years removed from my last one in 2016 (which makes me feel a little old...).
Also, see everyone at NAIC :D
I was extra focused on my PhD these past few weeks, and it showed in my losses T.T but I'm super excited to watch all my friends in day 2 tomorrow! Also, schedule ⭐️
Also -- my opponents had an issue with translation at the start of r9. The judges, instead of pulling players out of the play area to avoid distracting other players from our matches in progress, fielded a lengthy dispute + judge questions *directly behind me* through our turn 5.
Ok, this
#PlayPokemon
stream is great, but if we're going to take players off of their own switches, then I really wish we could just use a default avatar for player two rather than the distracting one that I'm having to watch now. Personal complaint. 😅
Since I don't think anyone else's fates are tied to this team, I can post a rental; here is the experimental FWG squad I was trying to refine by playing it in the GC, it did well enough that it hurt not to do better 😅
(ignore team name -- team is called "libra" but name bug)
Good luck to everyone at Vancouver today! My time as the most recent N.A. regional champ is almost over, and I couldn't be more excited to see who's next :)
One thing this format is really testing me in... over the last year I've built a lot of teams I've been proud of, but I've been really bad about suiting those teams to the meta I'm going into. It feels super important to build to MU spread this time, for NAIC.
VGC players, a new pokepaste is here!
Pokebin works just like pokepaste, but has several improved features including images for all the new mons (with shinies!), and a collapsible section for notes that can be copy/pasted
example:
I feel like the competitive problems of terastalizing are all resolved if we can see all the Pokemon's tera types in team preview (and on the battle info screen obviously). Then it's just whether you guess the tera turn right and not "wait, fire jellicent? my ferrothorn!"
Hey everyone! I've been working on Yveltal Ogre for ~a month as a sort of fun project, and before I left for vacation last week I finally landed on a comp I liked. It hit top 10 on the PS ladder on 6/3 (I love cookies) and I wanted to share it with everyone.
@45mice
I wrote about a variation of this thought four years ago before we knew about COVID -- maybe I shouldn't be plugging my poor writing job, but, ya know. It feels appropriate to mention
The lack of downtime on the stream today was incredible. I had it on in the background while I was working, fully expecting to have long periods of nothing, but almost never had one! What an entertaining and informative kickoff to worlds
#PlayPokemon
Schedule from today! Every single person impressed me in one way or another, fairly difficult schedule. I had chances in all of my losses, but ultimately didn't make the right calls.
If I lost to you... I'm sorry for the salt I just wanna do well 😭😭
Tanner was a delight to have in the car to and from Louisville. He talked about how hard he prepared for the regional and how anxious he was, and the hard work showed; I'm personally looking forward to seeing how he does in a post-match interview :)
I think my experience at 2015 nationals is a great example of how beautiful, complex, and straight up challenging playing competitive Pokemon is. It's a wonderful mental exercise regardless of how punishing it can be, so... Happy playing everyone :)
Like. I have argued every chance I could get that the IC BFL needed to be *not all of them*. And not only is it all of them, but someone who attends three ICs and does well at all of them makes any regional results I have irrelevant🥹
I haven’t spoken up in a bit, but to practice my team building skills, I’ve decided to make and shortly test a new team every day built around a randomly selected pair of restricteds.
In other news, Lugia Kyurem-W has very few possible win conditions.
@Xeminan
Unlike many of the legendaries you catch in the Indigo Disk which have one of their original two types as their tera type when you catch them, Lugia is caught as tera.... water!

(at least it was for me! maybe my game is bugged...)
For those curious: I do not play tcg aside from one deck. I own it in paper, with blinged versions of the key cards. It is usually extremely fringe, and has been ranked c tier for 3 months in every list I've seen. It just won Indianapolis.
