’s Cool Aunt. Brush your teeth, unwrap your UVs, and fail. Drinks her coffee and loves her job.
Now that I’ve reached 2400 followers, I think it’s time for a new intro post!
Hi, I’m Jessica and I am a Tech Writer at Epic Games, focusing on Worldbuilding and Art Pipeline tools. Outside of that, I focus on Level Design in my spare time. Prior to the industry I was a teacher.
After Warner Bros took various cost-cutting measures including turning movies into tax write-offs and refused to pay actors & writers for months, David Zaslav’s 2023 pay package is now at $49.7M, a 26.5% increase from 2022.

As you can imagine I spend A LOT of time in UE, focused mostly on worldbuilding tools like Landscape and World Partition. Today, I want to share my process for creating alpha brushes using real world height data for sculpting Landscapes that have a very natural look.
Epic friends, if you have been affected by the layoffs, pay attention to my account. I will retweet all opportunities that come my way.
Recruiters, Epic folks are top notch. Our loss should be your gain.
So this is for all you new folks! I’m Jessica, a tech writer on

This is why I raised in parliament recently that game art should be an apprenticeship not a degree. The government should support studios taking on placements to train them, this benefits everyone.

So I’m out for the rest of the week resting from a mild case of the Rona (my first). What better time than to start writing my Level Design threads. These threads will be focused on Creators and Level Design beginners who want to learn better methods for level layouts.
If you have any open opportunities that someone from Epic might be able to fill, please post them below and I will amplify it. Let’s get folks hired

In Unreal, we have Level Instancing, Packed Level Actors, HLODs, and Mesh Merge tools to help reduce draw calls and combine your meshes together to help with performance.
Draw calls are responsible for a good 50 percent of the chugging issues I have helped games with.
A draw call is "okay now draw me an apple, and come back when you are done for the next instruction."
Then you ask for another apple. Then when they return you ask for another...

Just reach my 4 year anniversary with Epic this week. This marks 4 years in the industry, previously many years adjacent in education, and I survived my first layoff last year.
Hey friends, Princess Zelda has a mass on her that has turned ugly and we are off to the vet tomorrow morning to see what we can do about treatment and removal. Can she get some prayers/good vibes/thoughts? I’ve been worried sick about her all day.
This is really how I felt about Joe’s comments. Burnout is a very real issue in the industry. However, many students tend to believe that just doing the work assigned in class is enough to make a portfolio and apply for a job.
Conflicting feelings about this one! Two things can be true:
1️⃣ Not resting and taking time for yourself is a recipe for burnout, injury and disaster
2️⃣ This industry is tough and you gotta put time in!
At this point, capitalism is cancer. Each company seeks to exploit everything around it to create exponential growth. Billionaires gobble up resources meant for others like tumors and then provide nothing in return. It’s time for a new system.
Hey new followers! Just wanted to let you know what you signed up for! I provide/retweet

resources & opportunities, especially for folks just starting out. I love to lift up folks & celebrate their wins.
I’m dedicated to being a visible trans success.
The secret no one will tell you… no one has it together. Everyone is just making it up as we go. Everyone has at least one part of their life that is completely off the rails.
And look for new 5.4 docs on the Epic Dev Community! I personally updated docs for:
PCG
Interchange
Some Landscape
And more by our amazing docs team! Find an answer to your issue in the docs? Thank a Tech Writer!
Unreal Engine 5.4 is here!🔔
It’s packed with new features and improvements, including the toolsets we’ve been using internally to make ‘Fortnite Chapter 5,’ ‘Rocket Racing,’ ‘Fortnite Festival,’ and ‘LEGO Fortnite’ the successes they are.

Today marks 14 years with my lovely wife. We’ve been through poverty, transition, and my RA/chronic pain diagnosis. We continue to survive the plague. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
My wife made a great point (one of the many reasons why I love her) that a vast number of people are “temporarily able.” Disability can come at birth or later due to accident, disease, and so on
One day you may find yourself need the same accessibility options that you hate now.

Spent the last hour of the day blocking out a ruined cathedral scene as a sample for the use of Data Layers in UE. The grey box will be one layer and the final Megascans assets will be another. You will be able to switch between them during runtime to see how the level was built.
Earlier today, a 20 year plus veteran of the industry said he loved my resources and suggested them to others. I’m just going to ride that high all week.

Now that the event is over, I suppose I can share a few pics :) they certainly fed us well and those Shield Potion drinks went down very easy. Such a great evening!
No spoilers but that

event was amazing. Congrats to all my friends who put their heart and soul into making this wonderful event happen.
If you worked on this but are not at Epic anymore, you are missed and deserving of praise for this one :)
Greed and self interest have really fucked us, haven’t they? We gave the wrong people power at nearly every level of our society. They now look out for their own interests and our expense.
Worse yet, they’ve convinced us all that we should too. Fuck that.

Something I need to say. I see a lot of my mutuals engaging w/ the recent post from L*bs of TikTok. DO NOT ENGAGE W/ THIS ACCOUNT OR CONTENT. The owner purposely engages in hate content & stochastic terrorism. Their followers are insane. Death & bomb threats follow their posts.
A lovely community manager told me today that they love my Twitter account and they feel like I do social media right.

To create your own high quality alpha brush based on real world terrain, you’ll need a source of height data. I recommend an online tool called Tangram Heightmapper. This tool gives you access to heightmap data from all over the globe.

has filled my feed with so many wonderful people and shown me just how diverse our industry is. Now let’s get more of these fine folks into leadership positions…
Isn't it strange that Game dev is one of the few industries where over time isn't paid at all?
If that were to be a thing, leadership would be held accountable for any bad planning and would have to really think about how they structure everything
What if, maybe just maybe, we monetarily incentivized the business bros GROWING a stable business rather than hitting short term arbitrary targets. Like if their bonus was tied to years in positive cash flow and employees retained?
After helping do portfolios and mock interviews Tuesday, I wanted to answer some of the most common question I received about

Survival is paramount. Look for jobs that allow you to be “industry adjacent” and still work on your skills.
Neil Gaiman once said that your dream job is a mountain. Any step that gets you closer to the mountain has value. Evaluate jobs by if they are a step forward or back.
Just throwing this out there: getting a “normal” job while looking for game dev work is 100% okay. You’re not giving up on your dream. You just need to be able to pay your bills.
And this is why I will always have a job :)
Don’t do docs? Your knowledge will be lost.
Engineer writes them? See below.
Hire a tech writer? Beautiful documentation like this:
I have made another trip around the sun and I am lucky to want for very little at this stage in my life. For my birthday, hug a trans person and tell them they are loved, needed, and so important to this world.
So here’s a question from me for the
#gamedev
collective:
I writing a game design doc for something at work. I learned how to write them ages ago and it’s been awhile since I taught students how. It’s time to check/update my knowledge!
What are the must haves in a GDD?
Got my first ever Victory Royale this evening. I’m actually enjoying this season. My former students would make fun of me so much for how much Fortnite I play now lol.
All this instability reminds me how lucky I am to work at Epic. We are still privately owned (though we do have investors) and that insulates us from some of the instability. Yes, we had layoffs but I feel it was done as a last resort due to the downturn.
Just a reminder to graduates, aspiring artists trying to break into the industry. Your social media presence & impression of you matters.
It's been the same since the days of Polycount & other forums. People get remembered for being troublesome.

I’ve been thinking about what to say for

& it’s been hard. I don’t think our community has faced this level of hate in my lifetime. I have despaired. I have cried.

Curious about UE Docs? Myself, Mike, and
@Katstodian_
will be on Inside Unreal today at 2pm EST. I will be talking about working with PCG and the challenges of writing for a feature that is currently in active development!
#gamedev
Tonight I made a choice my younger self might not have made. My wife and I both have chronic health issues. She was having a rough night and needed me. My RA is also flaring. However, I had a deadline tonight for an LD class I was taking.
I decided to put the work down.
If this is a record year for amazing game experiences, why is it a record year for layoffs across the industry? Even devs that we thought were solid.
There has to be a better way.
So this beautiful boy needs a $6k surgery to fix his knee. Thank god I get paid well. The doc acted like we would need to talk about it and get back to them. No, this is my baby. No cost is too big.
@kchironis
At this point, seeing it even from inside the industry, I still believe that game devs are a cabal of sorcerers chanting the blackest of sorcery. There’s just more pizza and snacks than I expected.
The Why of Level Design Part 4
Cognitive Mapping
Cognitive mapping is the mental process that people use to understand and memorize a space. People use it every day when they travel somewhere unfamiliar or enter a space they have never been in before.
I’m going to put some positivity out there today. Zelda got her stitches out today! We also got her biopsy report back. The doctor said that he was able to get all of it with a very small chance of recurrence.
Also… 0% CHANCE IT IS CANCER.
So it’s time for a call to action. If this idea resonated with you then be the change you want to see:
- start mentoring an industry hopeful
- Reach out to a local game dev program as an advisor.
- work with your studio to start an apprenticeship program.
I promise it’s worth it
Are we doing this again? QA are game devs. Docs writers are game devs. Producers are game devs.
Many QA folks have the same amount of technical knowledge as the engineers.
If you make games or support the process of making games then you are a game dev.
If every Games QA person just decided to suddenly stop working, Game Studios would collapse.
Yet we are constantly treated by executives and decision makers as expendable and lesser.
Procedural forest tutorial included in the UE 5.3 documentation is nice. Took only a few minutes to get a 7x7 landscape layer to randomly populate 4 varieties of tree.
@Sizigyy
As a former game dev teacher, I lost count of the number of gamers who went to school for development, only to quit after year one because it’s “hard”
I’m thinking my next tutorial will be about Player Economy. This is the idea of what currency players bring to the game, such as skill, time, and attention, and how they choose to spend it interacting in our levels.
Would this be helpful

Hey friends! If you work at a tech company, game dev, or publisher, I would love to ask you a question.
Does your company have a policy regarding pronoun usage and could you share some general details? Feel free to DM me if you don't want to publicly share!
Therapy can only do so much if you’re not able to get your basic needs met. Mental health is affordable housing. Mental health is free healthcare. Mental health is free education. Mental health is food security. Mental health is financial stability. Therapy can’t fix the system.
