Coalition of young activists and organizations advocating for safer social media and online platforms for kids, teens, and young adults.
#DesignItForUs
We’re excited to release our new policy platform! 🎉We’ve created a set of key principles we see as critical for any activist, policymaker or legislator to center when addressing privacy, safety and wellbeing online.💡
WOW! Still cannot get over this video. 😭😭😭
We're so grateful for the support of the
@RTyouthpower

What an honor. Thank you Prince Harry and Meghan! 🥳🥳
We're grateful to have their support in advocating for policy for safer social media for kids, teens, and young adults.

"The duke and the duchess, and all of their work, have been pivotal in moving so many social issues forward and bringing visibility to a lot of important areas, and specifically responsible tech.”
“To be able to have that support system is monumental and deepening our ability to connect with one another and our communities," said our Co-chair
@EmmaLembke
of our grant from

It's important to have parents in the room when talking about social media’s impacts on
#YouthMentalHealth
. That's why Archewell Foundation and I came together on
#WorldMentalHealthDay
to hear from parents about their experiences and discuss a path towards a safer online world.
That’s also why we love when any conversation about the impact of social media involves those impacted – us! Shoutout to Meghan and Prince Harry for prioritizing listening to young folks:
We're thrilled to be a part of
@RTYouthPower

With their support, we'll continue to advocate for policy to protect kids, teens, and young adults online.

Hey Mark Zuckerberg,
Your company calculated the lifetime value of a teen to be $270. We’re here to say we’re worth more than $270.
It’s time Big Tech is held accountable for profiting off our mental health and well-being.
Sincerely,
@DesignItForUs
HUGE News: We're in the Sunday edition of the
@WashingtonPost
!
As digital natives, our experience makes us experts to stand up to Big Tech, whose products exploit our data, well-being, and mental health for profit.
The
@FTC
’s proposal to ban Meta from monetizing kids and teens’ data is a HUGE step forward in protecting us online.
Watch our Co-Chair
@emmalembke
break it down in this new explainer:
“Ten years from now, social media will not be what it is today. It will be what people of my generation build it to be.”
Watch our Co-chair
@EmmaLembke
share how Gen Z will hold Big Tech accountable for their profit-driven harm by advocating for legislation including
#KOSA

Thank you
@senblumenthal
for meeting with us last week to listen to our stories and discuss how your bipartisan legislation—the Kids Online Safety Act—will protect kids online.
We urge the Senate Commerce Committee to pass
#KOSA
out of committee tomorrow.
Gut wrenching moment from yesterday's hearing when Arturo Béjar makes clear to
@SenBlumenthal
that Meta's senior executives knew about Instagram and Facebook's harms to kids and disregarded it.
Here is the exact language of Mark’s address to the families in today’s hearing.
“I’m sorry for everything you have all been through. No one should go through the things that your families have suffered and this is why we invest so much and we are going to continue doing
We don't really believe Linda Yaccarino is acting in our best interests when Twitter spent $900,000 on lobbying last year to defeat common sense legislation.
Hellooooooo Twitter! We’re a coalition of young people and youth-led organizations taking on Big Tech. 👋🏼
Give us a follow and join us in the fight for policy for safer social media and online platforms for kids, teens, and young adults:
We are launched! 🚀
BIG thanks to everyone for turning out tonight. And special shoutout to
@FrancesHaugen
for joining us with such an inspiring call to action for young people to stand up to Big Tech.
Thank you
@MarshaBlackburn
for calling attention to Facebook's internal documents, which estimate the lifetime value of a 13 y/o user to be $270.
Our safety and futures can't be quantified.
If Meta didn't have anything to hide, they wouldn't be trying to shut down the
@FTC
lawsuit against them for violating federal children's privacy law.
At this point, Meta acts like they are just playing a game. But for us -- it's our lives.
Meta Platforms sued the US FTC claiming its in-house trials violate the Constitution and asked a court to immediately halt the agency’s bid to change a 2020 privacy settlement.
We’re putting up signs on the west lawn of the US Capitol today.
Each sign represents the story of one of our members from across the country calling for lawmakers to pass policy requiring Big Tech platforms to

We were in DC this week advocating for legislation to put the onus on Big Tech to make the internet safer for young people by default and by design.
Young people deserve a seat at the policymaking table. 🧵
Every sign in our installation today at the U.S. Capitol represented the story of one of our coalition members—and why we're urging Congress to pass legislation requiring online platforms to

We were thrilled to meet Baroness Beeban Kidron of the

@BuffyWicks
during our week of action in D.C.
We're grateful for their work to protect kids online and were proud to work with them on passing the California Age Appropriate Design Code.
We love to see it.
After our week of lobbying lawmakers on Capitol Hill, the Kids Online Safety Act and Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act are heading to a markup next Thursday:
Meta can put out all the press releases they want and get all the headlines they want, but the truth is that they have known about these harms for years.
If they cared about our wellbeing, they would have taken steps years ago to prevent harm.
Exactly right! As the
@Surgeon_General
testified today on the youth mental health crisis:
We need "safety standards for social media that help protect kids from exposure to harmful content" as well as "from features that seek to manipulate them into excessive use."
Our Co-chair
@Zamaan_Qureshi
got straight to the point: Social media doesn’t have to come at the expense of kids’ privacy and mental health.
Tech execs leverage our time, likeness, and insecurities for profit and it’s past time to hold them to account.
#KOSA
could change that.
"For women and girls, the AI threat is not around the corner. It is here,” said
@ma_franks
in support of a bill to criminalize the sharing of nonconsensual sexual deepfakes and and allow victims to sue.
“As a society we have allowed a situation to develop where we have this complicated — or rapidly evolving — technology that’s helping some people, that’s harming many, and we haven’t put in the safeguards or guardrails to mitigate it” -

Our coalition co-chairs
@emmalembke
and
@zamaan_qureshi
shared their thoughts:
A former Meta adviser, Danish psychologist Lotte Rubæk, resigned over the company's failure to tackle self-harm content on the platform.
The company claims to want to keep kids safe, she says, but their primary agenda is to hook users and make money.
We've heard that Big Tech is running ads at Capitol Hill against legislation to protect kids and teens online.
So, we're running this video as a digital ad now to make clear to lawmakers in DC: Pass bipartisan legislation to protect kids online.

is the face of the Senate Judiciary website!
Last year, she made history when she testified as a young person in front of the committee, urging them to take action to protect kids online.
So proud of our core team coalition members
@EmmaLembke
,
@sneharevanur
, and
@samhiner
for being called by Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex!
Our response in
@CNN
:
"Design it For Us, a youth coalition pushing for changes to social media in the face of mental health concerns said lawmakers should focus on shaping the basic product design of social media platforms, rather than imposing after-the-fact usage limitations."
Under the bill, social media platforms would be barred from letting kids below the age of 13 create accounts or interact with other users, though children would still be permitted to view content without logging into an account
We're joining
@fairplayforkids
,
@DigitalDemoc
, and
@CCDHate
in urging Meta to cancel plans to open its Horizon Worlds platform to teens. We can't afford to let profit-driven companies launch untested projects on young people.
Our very own

just crushed it!!!
So glad to have the opportunity to speak in support of the
#MNKidsCode
, which would "[require] companies to meaningfully prioritize the wellbeing of underage users over profits."
If Mark Zuckerberg and co were truly committed to protecting us online, they wouldn't lobby against legislation to do just that.
There are bills on the table to create a safe digital world for young people and Congress must step up.
We’re here on Capitol Hill today to make clear to Big Tech CEOs that we’re not a number.
Our mental health and well-being is worth more than $270, Mark Zuckerberg.
ICYMI: Our Co-Chair
@EmmaLembke
shared her own personal story with
@NPR
about how social media platforms led her down a dangerous path towards disordered eating.
It's past time for these companies to be held accountable for serving harmful content to kids.
HOT OFF THE PRESS: New op-ed from our Co-Chairs

and
@zamaan_qureshi

Watch Emma break down why we care so deeply about elevating human stories towards our mission:
Hey, that's us! 👋🏼
As young people who have grown up online, we have lived through the harms perpetuated by Big Tech's online platforms and social media.
We demand a seat at the table when it comes to policy to protect kids online.
Young people deserve a voice in building their digital environment.
Not only is protecting kids and teens online good policy, but it’s overwhelmingly popular.
🚨New polling from
@CCDHate
:
81% of teens agree that platforms should build products according to safety by design.
71% of teens agree social platforms and executives should be held responsible for harms.
We are proud to join
@AFTunion
in calling on Big Tech companies to make changes to protect kids online.
It's time Big Tech put our health and well-being ahead of profit.

😮 Our core team member
@sneharevanur
, a leader in the AI space, is joining
@VP
at the White House to discuss "the Societal Impact of AI."
📺 Follow along:
We're grateful for Jenna Ortega's honesty and openness about social media's harms to young people:
“It's such a hard thing to balance. How do you be honest without jeopardizing your own health and safety? It's very easy to feel out of control.”
Jenna Ortega is right. It is manipulative.
"It almost influences bandwagon mentality…as soon as you see a trend, especially the way the algorithms are set up, it’s all you're seeing and feeding on, and it’s just not brainwashing in a sense, but very very manipulative.”
Jenna Ortega starts to cry as she talks to Elle Fanning about how toxic social media can be: "It's such a hard thing to balance. How do you be honest without jeopardizing your own health and safety? It's very easy to feel out of control."
GOOD MORNING BALTIMORE!
We’re taking over the
@baltimoresun
website today to let everyone know:
Maryland can lead the nation in protecting kids online with the
#MDKidsCode
.
Just like our co-chair
@emmalembke
said before Congress:
“Make no mistake, unregulated social media is a weapon of mass destruction that continues to jeopardize the safety, privacy and well-being of American youth.”
Big Tech’s rhetoric on
#VTKidsCode
isn’t scaring us, and it isn’t fooling our co-chair
@zamaan_qureshi
either.
“This kind of tech reform is currently law in the United Kingdom, and last I checked, the internet is not broken.” 🔥
We’re *so* thrilled to announce

New in Politico Morning Tech:
“Design It for Us - a youth-led coalition of advocates pushing for kids online safety legislation - also blanketed Capitol Hill with 100 lawn signs on Monday to demand passage of KOSA and the Children and Teens Online Privacy Protection Act.”
Still thinking about our Co-Chair
@emmalembke
’s powerful Senate testimony:
“As I began to spend more time online, I was met with a harsh reality. Social media was not magic—it was an illusion, a product that was predicated on maximizing my attention at the cost of my wellbeing.”
