2021 is the 1st year I can recall I kept my #NewYearResolution - every time I went to the supermarket, I bought and donated something for the food bank. I wasn’t perfect, had to go back/make up a missed one - but I did it all year. I just wish I didn’t need to @TrussellTrust

@ruskin147 My not so little diva has been with me since he was a pup. He still runs away from me when he sees the harness (if he doesn’t it means he is super desperate for a walk). As soon as it’s on he runs to the front door (almost 7yrs) 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ he looks angelic now…

@sociabledog @ruskin147 The first night I brought my dog home when he was 9 weeks old I sang to him to settle and calm him. I still do it when he’s stressed or at the vets. I don’t know if it does make him feel better or just make me feel I’m doing something but it’s lovely bonding time 🥰

@zackferguson I’m PG14 (grad 2010). I’m qualified longer than some consultants and won’t be done until at least Feb 26 - yes I’ve taken a slightly long way around but each year has contributed positively to my clinical practice today.

@drkeithsiau A very wise Professor of EM at your hospital Keith once told me (after he saw an Orthopaedic surgeon reforming to stereotype as my senior) ‘if an Orthopaedic surgeon asks where the fracture is on an X-ray… hand them an ECG… and ask which way up it goes!’ 😂❤️

@cardiacpolymath @jdrwilcox I made the same analogy when interviewed on the picket by local news - pointing out that @SteveBarclay became an MP the year I qualified - he’s a Senior MP and I’m still a ‘junior’ doctor. And Rishi would still be a junior because he became an MP in 2015 😤

@mstotty88 Because surgeons do an intervention the registrar can’t always do. There are few meaningful interventions overnight that a consultant can do that a med registrar can’t. There aren’t enough physicians to staff most medical takes AND OP clinics already let alone pointless nights

@nikinoona I *hate* the ‘illness is a fight/battle’ narrative. Recently I tweeted ‘illness is not a fight to be won. Death is not giving up. Care never ends’. It’s really important as clinicians we don’t use such metaphors. It’s super unhelpful/toxic in the long term.

@TheSuzieMiller @zackferguson No but it should worry everyone when even ‘professional’ roles are struggling to pay the bills. We have always incentivised higher skilled/responsibility jobs.. also doctors and NHS staff have seen a *much more* significant impact on their pay than average workers

@MartinRCGP My GP friend is really struggling w/ acute exac of chronic MH probs .. he does 8PAs/wk after recent period s/leave. Recently had to go home early after he found out his pt committed suicide. PM told him he is a ‘burden’ to the practice. This is awful. How can I help?

@jowhiley It might be a bit late Jo but I have used music to great effect when looking after patients with LD. I ask what their favourite song or band is (or a film/musical they like) and I sing along to that as we do tests with masks etc I try showing on a favourite toy can help too.

Manual dexterity is only one part of the job, good team working, situational awareness (requires empathy) , good comms all vital

@drtimothyli Got referred a low risk patient for admission for serial troponins once ?nstemi. Referring doc said at the end of the chat ‘it’s probably nothing but his grandson sat on him a few days ago’. I said humour me and do a sternal XR… grandson was 14 and 80kg… # sternum….

@DrRobgalloway Point 1 is very true but should go further - the NHS is where all the last 13 years of underfunding in dentistry, social care, surestart, schools, education, community services come home to roost. As you say much of this is down to poverty and limited life opportunities 😞

@jabberwock951 Regs can tie up threads of complex cases and make them simple. Or pick up nuances that others miss in the swamp of info who get bogged down in the detail. It can work both ways. The more senior I get the fewer tests I do but the more I write.

@DoctorJLam I’d be interested in corresponding CFS… I’m a keen deprescriber but 75+ is a bit eary id say given we are CABGing to eary 80s. 80+ it’s a conversation and 85+ I’m keen. All context dependent though (and I’m acutely based)

@CarlosDuong I had a robust 96 year old in sustained haemodynically stable VT cardiovert after amio, mag, calc and x3 shocks… my young good looking SHO went to check on her a while later.. fluttered his eyelashes once and she was back in VT 😂😱😤… lignocaine infusion finally sorted it

@EricIdle I never underestimate what a patient with dementia can remember or do after an experience as a v baby doc trying to exit a secure ward - and spotted an elderly lady with dementia find and fold up a piece of paper and try and ‘swipe card’ her way out after me..🤫

@Cheapoflurane Not sure it was DATIX’d but SiteCo phoned ITU to complain that ‘the doctor has taken the patient outside for a cigarette!’ The quadriplegic patient. With a trache. He was enjoying the sun on his face- the bed was just next to an air vent 🤦🏻‍♀️

@jowhiley I’ve taken blood gases singing along to Mamma Mia, anaesthetised another to ‘Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?, used ‘Feed the Birds’ from Mary Poppins soo many times to soothe agitated, confused patients (and done a lumbar puncture)..

@Medic_Russell As awkward as I find them I beach clean as a hobby and one of my many collections is of washed up bottle caps and I’ve been meaning to make a Christmas wreath from them but haven’t got round to it yet. Anything to reduce plastic waste which I get very anxious about

@drsarahedwards My favourite has to be the 96yr old who came in ‘off legs’… who turned out to be drinking half a bottle of vodka a day. Some tosser made her see the Alcohol Specialist Nurse. I would have just said - don’t drink so much you fall over and end up back in here and left it at that!
