Praying for the Pleasant Plains football player who had a medical emergency tonight at Riverton. Also prayers for his family, teammates, coaches and everyone impacted — Riverton as well as Plains.
Best wishes go out to longtime area athletic trainer Pete Stoll, who recently suffered a “mild to moderate” stroke. On a Facebook post, Pete said it could have been worse. He’s going through therapy and is determined to be back helping area athletes soon.
After 35 seasons, Dave Bates has called it a career as head football coach at Auburn High School. I remember one of his players, after the Trojans’ state final loss in DeKalb a few years ago, coming up to Dave and telling him, “Thanks for being my coach.” Well said, young man.
Congratulations to the Clinton H.S. boys basketball team and first-year CHS coach Vic Binkley. The Maroons are 20-5 after Tuesday’s 51-50 OT win over Shelbyville. It’s Clinton’s first 20-win season since 1996 and just its second winning season in the last 17 years.
We lost a great person early this morning. Terry Todt's dogged, determined battle with cancer ended, and the suffering is over. A huge loss, especially for the Montgomery and Macoupin County area. There'll never be another T. Todt, who always reminded us "It's about the kids."
QB Luke Lehnen (5) and North Central hold off Mount Union 28-21 to win Divsion III national championship. Second national title in three years for the Cardinals, who finished 15-0. They were runners-up last year.
Exciting news for Riverton athletics. A.D. Tom Weir said the board of education recently ok’d a project to install field turf on the football field and on the Hawks’ baseball and softball infields (and new drainage systems for the outfields). The track also will be replaced.
Plains head coach Brody Walworth on the additon of John Hambleton as D-coordinator: "It's one of best things that's happened to me as a coach, and to our program. Someone with his experience, talent and demeanor. He's been a tremendous addition for us."

Congratulations to area officials Torrey Points, Allen Poggenpohl and Kevin Hermes for being selected to work the 1A-2A boys state basketball tournaments in Peoria this weekend.

Condolences go out to the Leonard family on Liz Leonard's passing. But what a great example they set for us about staying strong and positive in the face of such a tough opponent. Saw Ken and Liz at Springfield Clinic a couple months ago. They were smiling and as upbeat as ever.
Abigail Kane 7-6-58 to 8-3-18. She touched so many lives, including mine, her children and grandchildren, plus countless New Berlin students. God bless her. ❤
Not sure how it happened, but Kelsey Card announced today she WILL be competing in the women’s discus throw in Tokyo — her second straight Olympic appearance. Congrats Kelsey!
Your heart goes out to SHG boys basketball team ... players, coaches, cheerleaders, student body and other fans. A history-making season cut short on a dark day in sports history in Illinois and beyond. At least their final on-court memory will be a riveting supersectional win.
The SJ-R area's two "youngest" football programs are in the semifinals for the first time. Plains' first varsity season was 2003, and Athens' was 2006. They'll both be playing at home next Saturday.

We’ve lost a one-of-kind coach and individual. Rest In Peace Don “Duke” Dobrino. Condolences to his wife Cookie and the rest of the Dobrino family as well as the Gillespie, Benld and Mount Olive communities — not to mention the area’s coaching fraternity.
Rochester's next playoff foe, Mascoutah, is guided by former Riverton coach and Illiopois grad Josh Lee...Josh's brother, Michael, is longtime coach at Sangamon Valley.
Condolences go out to the Hartlaub family on the passing of Don Hartlaub, who battled a very tough form of cancer since last summer. He was a great track coach and girls basketball coach, very dedicated to his student-athletes.

This should be the scene at LLCC's Cass Gymnasium this week. But like many other annual traditions, we have to put a big Covid asterisk next to the 2021 Sangamon County Tournament. It hurts!
Steve Kimbro coached his final game at Nokomis Friday night. He thanked his players, the fans, his family and especially his mother, Marian Kimbro. His voice cracked a little bit when he talked about his mom. Even big guys cry sometines.
Condolences go out to Reese Perrine and his family after his father, Bob Perrine, passed away at age 50 on Friday. Reese is caddying for Billy Kennerly at Panther Creek. He said his dad was excited that Reese was caddying in the tourney, and would have wanted him to continue.
It's been two years since she left us on 8-3-18 but Abigail's still in our hearts. Here's Abbe and grandson Liam on the lawn at Edwards Place (Springfield Art Association). Daughter Charlotte, who works at SAA, arranged to have a tree planted there in Abbe's memory.
Congrats to David Suits, officially hired as new boys basketball coach at Carlinville High School. South County is losing a good one, on and away from the court.

Now that I’m a shareholder, gonna sit down with Aaron Rodgers and hammer out a new contract through, oh, 2030. Thanks to daughter Charlotte and son Tom for a special gift.
Waverly tournament folks had a nice gesture before Lincolnwood's game today, recognizing Lancers' Ryan Poggenpohl, who's headed to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Riverton's Clint Cuffle goes up against Pleasant Plains' Dusty Bensko, left, and Jess Durako in Plains' epic 3-OT semifinal win at Peoria in 2000. What a great day for Sangamon County.
A great addition to this year's Waverly Holiday Tournament. They'll name a tourney MVP for the first time. It will be known as the Bill Pool MVP Award, named for the former Waverly coach who waged a long battle vs. cancer before passing away earlier this year.

Reid Detmers is slated for his second MLB start Sunday when the Angels visit the Dodgers. There will be no DH in the National League park, so Detmers will come to bat for the first time since high school!
Plains senior baseball player Cam Furbeck hit four shots -- layup, free throw, three-pointer and halfcourt, to win $500 in Subway Shootout here at Fraase Gym. He said "food" would be high on his spending list with the $$$$.

Inspiring scene yesterday at Athens. While the football team practiced on the game field, state cross country champion Wyatt McIntyre was running HARD 400s around the track. One of the football coaches said McIntyre was one of the hardest workers he knew.

When I think about people who love coaching, this guy comes to mind. Don Borgini was head football coach at Virden, Carlinville and Gillespie. He’s been an assistant coach back at CHS for quite some time. Always full of energy and enthusiasm. You go Don!
It was cold Saturday, but hundreds of folks came to Camp Butler to take part in "Wreaths Across America," to remember our veterans during the holidays. Veterans like John Locker, Lori's dad, and my dad, Pat Kane.
Athens' Nic Laird has gone past the 1,000-point mark for his career. Needed seven points entering game. Hit FT with 7:40 left in fourth for his 1000th point.

Normally you might say the pressure's on Rochester. Williamsville has given the Rockets a tough Sangamon County act to follow. Then you remember, it's Rochester.
Iowa today honored the memories of football alums who passed away in the past year, including Don Dobrino — member of the Hawkeyes’ 1957 Rose Bowl team.
New Berlin coach James Dambacher congratulates friend, former teammate and Auburn coach Ryan Gardner after the Trojans held off the Pretzels 20-13 Friday night.
Plains' Joey Lee broke a 2A state tourney record and tied the all-time record for stolen bases in one state tourney game with four today. He did it all over the first three innings.

Watching Northern Illinois at Buffalo college football on ESPN2 right now. Pleasant Plains graduate Tristen Tewes is a tight end,
#82
in white jersey for NIU, which leads 24-10 in third quarter.
Ryan Mahan, Bill Welt and part-timer Trevor Lawrence are working their tails off. But the decision to do away with Jim Ruppert as a correspondent is not a good one. It’s a loss for SJ-R readers and for Gannett.
He’s baaaack. Cliff Cameron, who had a Hall of Fame career at Pleasant Plains, will serve as boys head basketball coach at tiny Greenview this season. Cliff assisted his son, Michael Cameron, at Greenview last season. But Michael’s now a grad assistant at Carroll U. in Wisconsin.
It's official: Calvary and Lutheran will play in the Sangamon County Boys Basketball Tournament next January. The Saints and Crusaders will bring the county field to 10. . . .

Purging things from archeological dig also known as my desk....Plains lefty Nick Beard was a cover boy for 2005 state baseball tourney program.

Good luck to Reid Detmers, who’s slated for his first start for Triple-A Salt Lake at 7:35 pm central time tonight. The Salt Lake Bees will host Las Vegas in a Pacific Coast League game.
Special moment -- Auburn and Plains girls players and coaches joined hands at center court in moment of silence in memory of Florida shooting victims.

Athens students get ready to celebrate Warriors' 1A New Berlin Supersectional volleyball win. They might as well take the bus from NB to Camp Point for Saturday's football playoff game.
A lot of folks attended a retirement celebration for Rick Smith this evening. Rick, the guy on the right, is stepping down as a teacher and athletic director at Franklin High School. But he’ll continue in his labor of love: coaching cross country. A job well done, Rick!
Condolences to the family of Mark Lash, who passed away at age 45. Wonderful athlete at South Fork and Virden early 1990s, especially basketball. Played that sport at LLCC and UMSL, later coached at several area schools.
In Class 1A-6A football, which are split into north-south 16-team brackets, Pleasant Plains is the lone No. 16 team that's reached Round Three.

Congratulations to Rochester graduate and SIU quarterback Nic Baker, who lead the Salukis to a win over Missouri Valley Football Conference power North Dakota State on Saturday. It broke NDSU’s 39-game MVFC win streak, and Baker was named MVFC Offensive Player of the Week.
Three local IHSA officials are working this weekend’s Boys State Basketball Tournaments in Champaign: Darrin Sortor of Sherman, Dan Held of Morrisonville and Kevin Hermes of New Berlin.
Carlinville's Kyle Dixon has 1,366 receiving yards this season. That's No. 17 on the state list. Who's No. 18? That would be Malik Turner and his 1,361 for SHG in 2013. Turner will be in uniform for the Seahawks vs. Green Bay tonight.

Got the rivalry win last night against a really tough Williamsville team. But the truly special moment was who surprised the guys in the lockerroom to celebrate afterwards…
#JaydenStrong
Jayden was PUMPED for Benton!
The two Sangamo football programs that started in the 21st century, Athens and Plains, will try to push their way into the semifinals for the first time. Cardinals already making first-ever quarterfinal appearance.

After suffering what appeared to be a season- and career-ending knee injury in Week 7, Williamsville senior LB Grant Daykin saw limited playing time at Fairfield last week and hopes to do the same at Carlinville on Saturday. So "Coach Daykin" is back in the game.

Another area officiating crew is working Friday's 2A football championship between Nashville and Sterling Newman; Aaron Lane, Dan Held, Brian Cuffle, Kurt Cuffle and Tim Ervin.
John Levin and I were among many who helped Joe "Mr. Pick Em" Michelich celebrate birthday
#90
on Sunday at Edgewood Golf Club. (His "official" birthday is Monday). Joe's an icon in Auburn and Sangamon County, and still writes a column for S. County Publications. No ordinary Joe!
I remember Pleasant Plains' Caroline Jachino being very cooperative after her team's triple-OT sectional loss at Hillsboro last year. Made me even happier when Jachino and Plains won the state title this year. Very classy young lady!
Speaking to the media after a season-ending loss can be difficult. It also shows character. Players from Payson Seymour and Liberty obliged and were polite, professional, open and honest. They deserve as much kudos for that as their play on the floor.
Sorry to hear that Illinois School for the Deaf is dropping most of its sports programs. I think of the kids, but also people like Joe Lee, who's poured his heart into coaching the Tigers in several sports over the years.
Congratulations to Lutheran High School A.D. and volleyball coach Katie (Gilman) McCulley on her upcoming induction into the Lewis University Athletics Hall of Fame. She had a stellar volleyball career for the Flyers. Ceremony takes place March 28 in Romeoville.

Williamsville is headed to Champaign with a hard-fought 12-7 win over Tolono Unity. … Oh I know, but spelling-schmelling; WHS will say they handed the other “L” to Unity.
