@BorisJohnson
have been rebuked by UK Statistics Authority chair Sir David Norgrove for misleading use of crime figures after claiming offences had fallen when in fact they increased.
UPDATE: West Yorkshire Police & Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson (Labour) tells me Boris Johnson has "abused" the police force's position & says the officers should not have been used in this way, for a "political speech about Brexit".
BREAKING: A formal complaint about Priti Patel's conduct was made when she was Employment Minister at Department for Work and Pensions,
@BBCNews
has been told. Complaint is believed to have been made by a member of her private office...
NEW. The statistic the last Government didn’t want you to know before the election:
10,083
That’s the number of prisoners released early between Oct 2023 & June 2024 under the emergency scheme because the Conservatives had failed to provide enough prison places.
BREAKING: The reduction in police officer numbers in England and Wales is "likely" to have been a "contributory factor" in the rise in cases of murder and manslaughter since 2014, a Home Office study has found....
BREAKING Attorney General, Geoffrey Cox QC has concluded that it is in the public interest to bring contempt of court proceedings against Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (AKA Tommy Robinson).
BREAKING: Premier League football clubs are to be paired with prisons as part of a groundbreaking scheme to reduce reoffending. Clubs will offer offenders courses in coaching and refereeing to give them skills to help them get jobs when they’re let out.
Latest on Priti Patel bullying claim from her time at Department for Work & Pensions:
@BBCNews

Steve White, Durham police/crime commissioner,tells
@BBCNews
about Dominic Cummings incident:
“Given the whole ethos of the guidance and regulations was designed to reduce the spread , regardless of reason, by travelling to County Durham when known to be infected was most unwise”
Apparently
@BorisJohnson
has been challenged about his remarks about money being "spaffed up the wall" on child abuse investigations ("malarky", he called it). He said it's not what he said. Well, here's a reminder that he did say it:
This exchange between
@MattHancock
&
@piersmorgan
shows why faith in politicians is so low. Imagine if Hancock had said “On reflection, yes, I regret it, it was a mistake”. How refreshing that would be. But he can’t bring himself to do it.
'Do you regret voting against extending free school meals?'
@piersmorgan
challenges Health Secretary
@MattHancock
on whether he regrets voting against extending free school meals.
He says he is 'really glad the situation has been resolved.'

NEW: 13 reasons why

ran out of room in prisons:
* It closed 10,700 places - but opened only 11,000, since 2010
* It introduced tougher sentencing - ignoring impact on prisoner numbers
* It was slow to get prisons built - 20,000 places promised, only 5,200 delivered
Sir David said he’d write to Patel & Johnson about their claims, also repeated by

“I agree that ONS measures of crime must be used accurately, and not misrepresented. In this case, the Home Office news release presented the latest figures in a misleading way..”

I’ll be working with Yvette’s talented team to develop the credible policies on crime, policing, security & immigration that this country badly needs…
A few prison facts.
In 2010 there were almost 34,000 prison staff in England/Wales.
Now there are less than 29,000…
…but the prison population is around 1,500 higher: 87,000.
Prison budget was cut by 25% between 2010 & 2017 - thousands of experienced staff left.

BREAKING A top-secret communications system - Encrochat- relied on by organised criminals to trade drugs and firearms has been “successfully penetrated” resulting in over 700 arrests & the dismantling of “dozens” of crime networks, the National Crime Agency says.
Sir David continues: “The Prime Minister referred to a 14% reduction in crime, which is the change between the year ending September 2019 and the year ending September 2021. This figure also excludes fraud and computer misuse, though the Prime Minister did not make that clear…”

You should not judge a police officer driving fast to stop a terrorist through the same lens as a speeding motorist.

A damning analysis of Chris Grayling’s probation reforms. They were ill designed, hurried through & destined to fail - and haven’t achieved what they were intended to. Many people warned about this - but they weren’t listened to.
It’s beyond comprehension that it can take three years and three months to sack a police officer who refused to take a drug test. This was not a complex matter: it should have been resolved within weeks. The police misconduct system needs fundamental reform.
Commander Julian Bennett has been dismissed following the conclusion of a misconduct hearing.
AC Barbara Gray said his actions damaged not only the public’s trust in the Met but also the confidence of our own officers and staff.

So, homelessness is a “lifestyle choice”, says
@SuellaBraverman
She should look at

figures showing 14% of prisoners are homeless on release. This rises to 25% after 3 months. Some jails even give prisoners tents - because they haven’t found them accommodation.
The British people are compassionate. We will always support those who are genuinely homeless. But we cannot allow our streets to be taken over by rows of tents occupied by people, many of them from abroad, living on the streets as a lifestyle choice. 1/4
