I recently met with a VC firm twice, showed a product demo, and answered countless questions about our strategy. Only to find out from someone else they were already invested in a direct competitor.
When people copy you, the best strategy is usually to ignore them. People who copy you are (a) unoriginal and (b) opportunists, and those are both strong predictors of failure. If you wait them out, they'll eventually drop away.

The Internet didn’t take off quickly. And VR is really just paving the way for AR which is not here yet. Augmented Reality, when done right, will take off faster than the iPhone.

This is privilege at its best. And for such a liberal state they seem to punish those who don’t come from parents who own property.
Thanks for the brainstorming session
@paulg
. I’m really excited to start fundraising for
@goagentive
next week. My experience in YC has been exceptional.
I’m passionate about social mobility. A key reason I’ve been able to move from being born into the bottom decile of income to the top is because of leaders in my church encouraging me to get an education, elite professional experience, and to start a business.
I want my kids to do great things, and I'm not trying to give them unhappy childhoods so that they can. Exactly the opposite. I know from talking to thousands of YC founders that the best way to make people ambitious is to encourage them.
@paulg
This was my experience — being born in the bottom quintile of income earners, high socioeconomic status individuals befriending me at church, at their advice setting high education and professional goals, and now I earn in the top quintile myself.

BYU respects Rachel and acted quickly to handle the situation in the moment and after the fact. BYU is going to improve because of this incident. The narrative that BYU shrugged off the incident is wrong. Other universities should look at how we reacted and find comfort.
YC interviewer today: Do you have any sales experience?
Me: Software sales and I sold religion for two years as a Mormon missionary.
YC interviewer: I’ve heard that one before…
Who was it?

That $45B at Meta also includes other products like AR Glasses, Rayban Stories, Portal, EMG, and more.
The others factor here is that this is not a winner takes all competition. There’s likely to be two major players in the next computing platform.
Also, Apples R&D was

This is what social mobility and economic opportunity equality looks like. I love it
@garrytan
. I’m proud to be a YC founder not born with a pedigree. Just like you.
My controversial opinion: I prefer in-person over working from home and distributed teams. I wanted to go back to the office. I moved to the Bay Area to do so. But spent all day on zoom from the office because my colleagues weren’t there. And I feel my experience at
@meta
was
I don't want to "go back to the office", I don't want to relocate for a job, I don't want to commute every day, I don't care about free lunches and snacks.
I’m forever grateful for my time
@meta
. I learned so much from my leaders and peers. This advice from Zuck perfectly describes the culture at Meta and the culture I want to have in my startup at

@garrytan
I was born in the bottom 20% of income earners. My job in the SF Bay Area brought me to the top 90. Forever grateful for a country with social mobility. Also grateful for the SLC-based faith that played a critical role in this mobility.

Just wait until Apple releases an AR/VR headset with largely the exact same features and functionality of the Meta Quest Pro released last year. They will be heralded as innovative even though it’s copying.

CRM for the stylist<>client
1. Submit photos before haircut
2. Store cut specifics like length on top/sides
3. Pictures before and after
4. Feedback from client 3 days after cut to stylist (photos, trouble areas, ideas for next cut etc.)
5. Order products used at cut from home

invest 500k and teaches you how to start a business.
MBAs cost ~250k and teach you how to operate a business.
YC applications are due Friday. Amazing value.
A pattern I've noticed in the current YC batch: a large number of domain experts in all kinds of different fields have found ways to use AI to solve problems that people in their fields had long known about, but weren't quite able to solve.
Product strategy is both an analytical exercise and a creative exercise. But average strategies tend to be highly analytical and low on creativity, whereas winning strategies almost always make highly creative choices and trade-offs.

According to
@pmarca
it’s the market. The market can pull a great product from a mediocre team and a mediocre product. The reverse isn’t true.
@Austen
It’s a terrible deal for employees at Amazon compared to Google and Meta which vest employee RSUs evenly each quarter throughout 4 years.
Not terrible on their own but terrible in the FAANG class of compensation.
My advice to engineers starting out:
Find an important open source project on the way up and fix a bunch of issues and then go cold email a bunch of startups you know use that open source project.
Langchain or Chroma are a couple to start with

@Jack_Raines
I will become a millionaire well before I retire while paying a full tithe. And I was a kid born into poverty and for a time raised on church and government welfare to a single mom. I’m just grateful for the opportunity to give back to something that’s given me so much.
My initial RSU’s at Meta were priced at 353 per share. I’m getting closer to break even. I was not lucky with when I joined. But count myself lucky for getting to join.
If you take a job at a startup, work hard, and pick a company in the top 10th percentile, you too can have the stock gains of a guy who started working at Facebook 8 months ago.
8am is the most often booked time on my calendly. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love that I’m available for my customers and hate getting to the office at 8am.

3. More apps like Twitter move to Subscription fees and apple gets a 30% cut
4. Apple collects more user data and moves further into advertising
(This is all true, and their strategy)

I tell people you can go through the discomfort of getting a valuable skill, or go through the discomfort of struggling to provide for your family. One is temporary.
@hrafntho
We’re 100% working on it and have entire teams dedicated to it. There’s a reason the quest pro has eye tracking, we keep improving hand tracking, and we’re building with EMG. But we do build something is private, obviously.
Here's my conversation with Mark Zuckerberg, his 3rd time on the podcast, but this time we talked in the Metaverse as photorealistic avatars. This was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. It really felt like we were talking in-person, but we were miles apart 🤯 It's
@CrusoniaC
From an ex-meta PM perspective: news made people unhappy on the platform. It’s became a pain points for users and Meta. I’m sure it made money through increased engagement but I think it’s clear users wanted it off the platform as well.
I feel similarly about my job in big tech. I came here to build but feel unfulfilled compared to what I could be doing as a founder. Figuring that out now.
being a VC is so easy, so high-status, the money is so great, and the lifestyle is so fun.
very dangerous trap that many super talented builders never escape from, until they eventually look back on it all and say “damn i’m so unfulfilled”.
I failed at all of these goals and backpacked Europe for 9 weeks with my wife and four month old instead. 10/10 am glad I spent that time with 100% focus on family.

@MorningBrew
The reality is Meta is coming after Apple, Microsoft, and Google with spatial computing. Apple is in defense right now with Vision Pro. Meta’s goal is to be a leader in the next computing platform. It’s not winner take all. But it’s likely a duopoly again. Apple expands the pie.
@martymadrid
Mint was truly a set it and forget it product. Retention and engagement must have been horrible.
I’m curious if startups can solve this or if they’ll face a similar destiny. Budgeting is a vitamin for most people. However improving credit scores is a pain killer.

Absolutely. Lots of VR engineers are working on transitioning VR to MR using the Quest Pro right now. Reality Pro will increase adoption too. I'm working on AR hardware so I love to hear people's excitement for this transition.
@EricPresidentVR
The verge is not journalism. This is an opinion piece at best.
The truth is, Apple is afraid of Meta. And that’s why they’re releasing the Vision Pro.
See it’s easy to just make things up.
@aivainvesting
@CrusoniaC
Absolutely. People wrongly interpreted Facebook as manipulating the news but the truth is the news was manipulating Facebook.
Country songs I want AI to produce:
1. Stick shift for a Tesla (I won’t buy until)
2. She’s not a bullseye, she’s a triple twenty.

I agree that there’s an issue with identifying talent. Who do you feel should be aligning the team on the vision for the product and customer, if not a PM?
Recently heard: “I’ll be lucky if I can grow the team by one this year!”
It seems like those on the management track were hired/promoted based on their number of direct reports not the revenue they generate per direct report. Misguided indeed.
@ballmatthew
My last day at Meta was Friday. I’m intimately familiar. Meta’s investments in AR are not reflected in the quest line. VR is less than 50% of that total sum.

fitness is Beat Saber plus punching, dodging, and blocking motions used in a fitness use case and not real time combat. But I think these are the same actions as real-time combat haha.
@djpando
I moved to the bay because I wanted to work in person at Meta. Joke’s on me. I sit in zoom meetings all day but with a higher tax rate. I think I developed far fewer relationships because of remote work. My last day at Meta is Friday. I’m starting a company and am going to have
Apple's VR/AR headset could have a head start in gaining influence within the XR market before other competitors emerge.
