Black Myth Wukong's success in China has mostly been a story of overwhelming positivity and collective celebration of cultural art.
It's unfortunate how some try to forcibly frame it on a negative view,taking away agency from an entire nation and reducing ppl to "nationalists".
NEW: Wrote about how Chinese nationalists and Gamergaters likely got together to push out massive sales of a ultimately mediocre game, Black Myth: Wukong. I also dived into the IGN report from last year and verified the translations myself.

Big hospital in Shenzhen, China...almost completly empty.
Of course this is just one hospital of many throughout the city, but that's the point: showing one random busy hospital w COVID patients in it of itself doesn't NECESSARILY mean much, neither is representative of all.
Today I asked 3 women (who happen to be Chinese) for their opinion on Stellar Blade after watching the new trailer.
They generally like it. None said it's offensive or sexist. I didn't condition their answers.

I still never met anyone in China who had COVID. Not a single person.
Since the pandemic started, I have not personally interacted with a single human who has experienced the virus (that I know of).
That's something.
@Shannon_Liao
Virtually everyone in China has heard of the game in the last 10 days. It has been everywhere. Reducing its success to nationalists is such a narrow and misinformed view of what a huge (mostly wholesome) social phenomenon the game has actually been in the country.
@jenzhuscott
On many levels, it's almost impossible to have a conversation about China with people who never visited. Or to some degrees, about the world at large. I wish more people could visit as well.

Nowadays we also have the 文和友 malls in mainland China (in Changsha, Guangzhou and Shenzhen), that try to replicate the walled city aesthetic.
Currently they're mostly empty with the majority of stores inside closed.

Like, seriously. Have we gone too far, as a society?
@BurgerKing
Was Shenmue the biggest graphical leap ever in gaming?
Besides 2D to 3D (16bit-32bit era in particular), I don't think there's ever been such a jump.
Was rewatching the game's intro today, and it's just stunning.

PS5 stock selling-out in China!
At Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen (world's largest electronic market), it is now clear that sales are extraordinarily high, driven by Wukong.
I previously reported on this sales surge (), which also includes PC and components.

That's such a disingenuous argument, and you should know it. Your whole article frames it in a very pejorative way, explicitly.
But you're entitled to your perspective and optinion, of course.

Online, people are openly expressing their discontent,even making references to Iran.
Shenzhen's population is generally very "annoyed" by pandemic restrictions imposed during most of 2022.
Personally, every single Chinese person here I have talked about this year complained.

Journalism is supposed to remain unbiased, neutral and factual. It's not journalism work to "care" about optics and perceptions of what people think of reality.
When people from around the world watch videos like these from Chinese cities, I wonder what they think.
Do they think this is fake? Post production on the vid? Only happening very rarely for special occasions?
It's weird having to explain that this is just...normal and common.
@Shannon_Liao
I personally know of adult and middle aged people in China who never cared about videogames, going out of their way to buy it and playing it on PC simply because they were so curious about all the buzz surrounding it. Simple, sincere, peaceful curiosity.
How common are VR arcades in China? Pretty common! Even here in the middle of "nowhere" in an old 2000 year old little town in China's heartland, there's one. Social priorities...

This is a MIL-CD. It's very rare. It's weird. It's interesting.

Also, responsible for how easy it was to copy and pirate games on the console.

As I write this, "sensitive" content on Weibo related to what's happening in 沙尾 in Shenzhen is being actively censored (deleted) in real time. Also from people's WeChat accounts.
Even the two pics I shared in the original tweet from this thread are now gone.
To be perfectly clear, while I am in Shenzhen, I am not in that specific location of the city to see exactly what is happening. Simply sharing what is being shared online, on Chinese social media.

Shenzhen's metro system today (L), and what it looked like in 2012 (R), when I moved into the city.
Now, it's the 4th longest metro system in the world, with about 550km of tracks!
By 2035, the system is expected to have more than 1000km!
When my friend said that, it rly hit hard for me, because it's so true. People aren't afraid of COVID.Ppl are afraid of restrictive measures, ppl are afraid and hesitant to make long term life plans, to schedule things.Ppl are feeling encroached.This is a disaster on many levels.
To be clear, this is NOT a "CCP shill" observation. I'm not saying there's no COVID and the health system in China isn't flooding with patients.
All I'm showing is that, as is the case w most things in China, generalizing about the country can be very misleading.
Wukong is peak representation and inclusivity.
It's not up to me to speak on behalf of a nation and its People,but I've been clearly witnessing how millions of people feel seen internationally like they never did before,thanks to this game.

This is not me being a CCP shill (can't emphasize that enough), but it is truly astonishing how quick and effectively authorities here can mobilize and set up hundreds (thousands?) of testing centers throughout this massive city in a manner of hours without much commotion.
Before ppl think "but labor is cheap in China!",please notice Wukong was developed by a Shenzhen studio.
White collar salaries in the city can easily average above those of many western nations,including of some European countries.

Trending on Weibo, and seen in virtually everyone's feeds on WeChat and other popular social media platforms.
The game is being discussed by national news channels and more.
HUGE launch!
Personal news:
I'm back working in gaming, full-time. For a publisher focused on bringing games into the Chinese market. Mobile games.
I'm in charge of marketing.
If anyone wants to launch their games in China, let me know please.
Not disclosing the name of the company here.
It's understandable how people who have little or no contact with China may have a skewed perspective of its society, generally.
But it's important to understand that Black Myth has been, overwhelmingly, the big trend in the country for the last 10 days. It was everywhere!
And in case anyone's wondering, this is indeed a big hospital. Nowhere near the biggest in town, but it's still a major building more than 10 floors high.
@CurtExplores
lol amazing. this year if anything feels like there's a resurgence of Christmas in china. more decorations, more Christmas markets and more stuff.
I'm 37, but I'm still going to convenience stores outside live venues and sneaking them in my pockets instead of buying overpriced drinks inside during a gig.
It's a matter of principle. Those who know, know.
At an office building in Guangzhou, management says renting is forbidden to black people. Allegedly by orders of the government.
Open institutionalized racism is, unfortunately, a reality in China.
To appreciate the good, we must be aware of the bad, too.
To reiterate: I'm not saying COVID in China isn't a serious issue right now, neither am I saying that hospitals filled w patients and fatalities aren't real.
I'm just showing ONE hospital (of many!) in the city, that happens to not be busy, apparently. I'm not extrapolating.

China is not a desert for gaming. China is the biggest gaming market in the world and gaming is totally mainstream in China and it's present pretty much everywhere you go in urban areas.

What's rly striking (but not surprising if you live in China,imo), is both the I'm-not-taking-this-shit attitude of many of the ppl,but also the sort of "ok whatever let them go" attitude from staff and force enforcement personel.
People know this is all a charade.Ppl are tired.
Back to China.
I just spent 2 weeks outside of China, and frankly, I already feel like I'm kind of outside of the loop in current events and whatever minutiae has been happening here.
People who live outside of CN and continue to provide social commentary and insights: LOL!
The wave of marketing this game triggered has been, I would say, unprecedented for a game in China.
The level of "social contagion" that influenced people who would otherwise never care about gaming to actually go and buy Wukong was/is a real thing!
Truly fascinating to see.
This is 100% correct, and it didn't even occur to me it would be worth mentioning,until now.
The accessibility of goods and their diversity is unparalleled in China. In particular in urban areas.
