In the winter, Norwegian fighter pilots have to land on hard-packed snow and ice. The drag chutes are very effective at stopping them quickly in such conditions. They also had drag chutes on their F-16s. I have flown Norwegian F-16s in such conditions, and they definitely need it

Great point! I think it shows scientific arrogance to say "the laws of physics" prohibit interstellar travel. Science is never "settled." The scientific method should always be applied, and some of our "assumptions" baked into "the laws of physics" may be incomplete.
