Yes, I was an evangelical Christian for ca. 26 years. Yes, I believed that I was a sinner, destined for hell, in need of a savior, and placed my faith in Jesus Christ and his finished work on the cross for my salvation. Yes, I am an atheist. Yes, all of these can be true.

I won’t debate whether things like slavery, genocide, rape, or murder are moral. I just won’t. I’m not a philosopher of ethics, and if you want to argue for the morality of these atrocious behaviors, you can do it elsewhere.

Although I take a firm stand against Christian fundamentalism and much of Christian apologetics, I miss being a Christian. Having spent 25 years of my life trusting in Christ as my Lord and Savior, leaving the Faith and the security and assurance I found in it remains difficult.

The Old Testament endorses slavery. That doesn’t mean you can’t be a Christian. It doesn’t mean that the Bible is not God’s Word. It doesn’t mean you are a bad person for believing in inspiration. But please, don’t try to explain it away.

This is not my field and based on my experience: It seems that many apologists who focus on philosophical arguments for the existence of god do so with the (perhaps unknown) assumption that, if a god exists, it is THEIR god. Many seem to be untrained in the biblical languages.

@andrew_deford It’s a dodge, plain and simple. Someone makes a claim that the slavery in the OT was something that it wasn’t, I show them why their claim is incorrect, but instead of conceding the point (or just leaving the conversion), they divert and ask this question.

One of the most difficult parts of promoting good scholarship on social media is dealing with non-specialists who don’t understand the data, but don’t realize it, and are convinced that we are wrong, and are quite often very rude and antagonistic with their assertions.
