After posting footage of the supercell on Monday, my twitter account exploded like I'd never seen before. I hit 1000 followers, all thanks to you!
To celebrate, here is a selection of photos from this very supercell:
Not to jinx anything here, but the European high-res model 4x4, which is available for the US on an experimental basis, has the most violent supercell of the day go straight through Moore and the OKC metro.

Numerous reports of funnel clouds from Germany coming in: Northeim NI, Madebach NW, Rodenberg NI, Florstadt HE, Halle NI and Hausweiler RP. A few pictures below which I did not take myself
Watching Saturday for a risk of severe weather. An eye catcher are the high amounts of MLCAPE. Most models currently predict around 4000 J/kg in southern Germany. These are immense values for this region of the planet.
It's now time to take Tuesday seriously. Latest models depict several strong supercells riding along the warmfront over central Germany. A significant all-hazard setup is possible.
#Tornado
confirmed a mere 7 km from our position near Béthune in N France!! As you can see, the wallcloud was very low shortly before entering Lestrem. However at the exact time of the tornado, the RFD pushed between us and the meso, making it impossible to see.

#Tornade

in 2022 Estofex issued a rare Level 3 for portions of Germany. Models the previous days had been going bonkers and a high-end, possibly even historic severe weather outbreak was expected.
A THREAD:
8 YEARS AGO TODAY:
A cyclic supercell embedded into an MCS produces at least 4 tornadoes in northern Germany. One of them grew to 1.5 km wide and earned a high-end F3 rating when it struck the town of Bützow, while deeply embedded in rain. Miraculously, nobody was killed.
A radar frame you won't see again anytime soon! 1 1/2 hours ago, this storm with a well developed hook echo over the very centre of
#Berlin
dropped some larger hail. Haven't seen reports of anything else.
A massive lightning bolt shoots out the inflow base of the Lille supercell as we are being chased by the RFD gustfront.
I still haven’t really processed what we saw yesterday. I‘ll be looking through my footage now and hopefully share some more!

I think this would also be fun to do for all the Europeans here on

in 1764 one of the most violent tornadoes in world history touched down in Germany. The tornado was rated F5 with winds over 300mph; a large mansion was wiped off the map and nearby stubs of previously felled oak trees were ripped out of the ground and thrown.

The developing bowecho in southern Germany is so strong it's glitching out on velocity radar. I have never seen something like this. The DWD has issued their equivalent of a PDS severe thunderstorm warning, expecting wind gusting to 140 km/h (87 mph) and 5 cm hail.

as it moves offshore over the unseasonably warm waters of the North Sea again: DWD discussed that the storm may be taking advantage of the warm SST which is highly unusual in this region and would explain the almost (sub)tropical structures near the center!
Watch out for the 21nd ECMWF member. This is definitely going to happen! The storm of the century will strike the UK, BeNeLux, Germany and Denmark - in September! Absolutely zero doubts on this scenario. We should begin evacuating all of west and central Europe now

At this range we have to seriously begin monitoring Thursday. As a shortwave approaches from the southwest, a very dangerous

event may unfold across large portions of Germany. Very large hail, hurricane-force winds and
#tornadoes
all appear possible.
#wxtwitter
We can now confirm that we didn’t see the

as it touched down but were only 6 km away. However I could imagine that I captured the developing funnel in this shot, taken roughly 10 mins before the tornado touched down.

A tornado has been reported with this picture in Bavaria, looks like there could be a funnel but the tree is in the way, so we‘ll have to wait for further information
Eine weitere Aufnahme der Superzelle im deutsch-französischen Grenzgebiet vor einer Stunde, aufgenommen bei Hügelsheim. Danke an Franziska für die Zusendung!
A flash of lightning illuminates the rainwrap-RFD marching around and engulfing the mesocyclone. Moments later, the supercell would produce a tornado.
8 April 2024 west of Lille, France
Another busy day of surveying damage today. But, we're finished now. There is a continuous damage path stretching more than 5 km across Vlodrop NL and north of Effeld DE. Peak width around 350 m, mostly below 200 m though. More info coming...
Did we capure the
#tornado
in Lestrem, FR on Monday? Let's analyse:
@KeraunosObs
Based on this radar frame, I would estimate the time of tornado to be around 21:10 CEST. Very clear rotation north of Béthune can be seen.
Highly impressive UFO-like mothership structure right now on the supercell near Nuremberg, Germany! Something like this as early as March is just unbelievable.
Of course there's no 9 June without mentioning the devastating bowecho that struck parts of W Germany on this day in 2014. With winds around 150km/h, it struck the largest metropolitan area in all of Germany, resulting in 650 million € in damage and 6 casualties.

Keep an eye on Sunday! ICON (displayed here) and other models suggest an unstable and well-sheared warmsector over parts of France, BeNeLux and Germany, with a coldfront pushing in from the west. That means time for

1 year ago today an incredible severe weather streak was ramping up over southern Europe. Over the span of of more than 16 hours, this very supercell alone moved from Slovenia well into Romania, producing very large to giant hail along its path.
Model agreement on a windstorm affecting BNL, GER & DEN has skyrocketed. Hurricane-force gusts 120-130 km/h seem likely, but in case of sting-jet formation, even gusts exceeding 140-150 km/h cannot be ruled out. This would be a disaster since trees etc are fully leafy.

Apparent supercell near Reutlingen in southern Germany about to have a mesoscale incident with new convection in its forward flank. Let's see how this one plays out
A dangerous situation will likely develop tomorrow afternoon and into the overnight hours across parts of central Europe, as strong supercells are expected to develop and quickly merge into one or more intense MCSs capable of causing swaths of destructive winds.
#EUwx
SHD, you good? A supercellular 150 km/h downburst in March? While I'm questioning the sanity of the SHD, it appears like a severe event's going to occur on Monday across S France and S Germany, with the highest risk towards France for Hurricane-force winds and possibly a tornado
A tornado has been confirmed already in late February in the case of Casekow, Germany. A brief F1T3 QLCS tornado tracked at least 1.1km through southern Casekow damaging homes and 3 utility halls, as well as snapping trees. It's the first confirmed tornado in Germany of 2022.
Potent severe storms active over east Germany. Incredibly, I can even see some distant flashes just above the horizon here, around 300 km away. That’s a new European record for me!
User on the DWD app reported a tornado north of Frankfurt. It’s unknown if this actually had ground contact but it apprears there was at least a funnel cloud
distinctive (sub)vortex signatures I found in crops during the site survey of three tornadoes that were produced by a cyclic supercell in northern Germany on June 18, 2024. More will be published via

It’s official! I saw my first ever tornado while chasing the supercell near Montabaur, Germany on Friday! This is now confirmed according to the Tornadoliste and also registered in the ESWD database. No rating has been applied yet, but it should be an F0-F1. Great feeling!
What do you do when 2 major high-res models look this different just 17 hours out?
This is not a rethorical question.
Tomorrow west Germany could get anything from rainshowers to a supercell outbreak with increased tornado risk. Spoiler: the first scenario is more likely.
#EUwx
Well well, this is interesting, the GFS, a global model, is showing 90 km/h winds from an MCS… This would be truly worrying in case it comes true.
Note however that other models do not see anything like this at the moment.

could become a real possibility there.
8 YEARS AGO TODAY:
A tornado outbreak hits Germany on May 12 & 13, 2015. Several weak and even strong tornadoes touched down over the course of two days, causing significant damage, but the worst didn't happen until the late evening of May 13....

We observed a very low hanging wallcloud on the supercell southeast of Luxembourg City yesterday. Several times, suspicious clouds appeared under the mesocyclone. If these were actually rotating funnels or just scud was impossible to tell from afar.

Not a good sign that they put one out so early, probably gonna see an update tomorrow morning...
The QLCS that crossed Germany last night had many smaller and bigger embedded mesovortices evident on doppler radar. Since there was an increased tornado risk, investigations for possible related tornadoes will be made over the coming days. 1/2
tTime to mention the shift in the weather pattern which is now forecast to occur next week. With troughing from the UK down to Iberia, Germany comes under the influence of southwesterly flow. Besides higher temps, we could very well see a return of storm season with this.
The 2024 season is starting. Here are 4 pictures from my first month of active stormchasing. That was only April. I'm very excited for what is yet to come
A strong MCS with destructive

looks terrible this evening, all deep convection has died down in its final hours before landfall. Strong windshear and dry air are getting to it. Originally it was expected to intensify up until landfall but it seems the opposite is happening - a blessing for Libya.
July 15th, 1582: The village of Rockhausen, Germany is wiped off the map by a violent tornado. However, nobody was killed in this incident, apparently because everyone took shelter in basements. So I guess people in 1582 knew how to handle a tornado, unlike people in 2023??
Tomorrow looks interesting as a QLCS is forecast to move from BeNeLux into Germany. While a brief weak tornado cannot be ruled out, severe straight-line winds up to 100 km/h will definitely be the biggest hazard. Might try to intercept this on a field outside the city.
The list is quickly growing, now 8 cases of funnels and mayhaps tornadoes:

Iserlohn, NW
Medebach, NW
Halle, NI
Florstadt, HE
Heusweiler, SL
Rodenberg, NI
Schorndorf, BW
