@TheSojournHQ
is, for me at least, the best original science fiction property out there right now. The combination of compelling characters, well paced swashbuckling adventure, and fantastic production design is perfection. Absolutely worth listening to!
@RightWingCope
Having lived in relatively ethnically diverse places all my life, conservatives getting pissy about diverse casting in any sort of media always feels so extra icky, like not only is it racist, but it’s like they’re trying to deny reality itself
@roryreckons
I’m reminded of when I was very young and asked by some sort of psychiatrist if I “Hear voices that aren’t there.” Now, being very literal minded, I assumed this was about hearing since I’d gotten a lot of tests on that. Cue an enthusiastic “yes!” to prove I hear fine
@DaraMWilson
That behaviors that cops are *trained* to see as guilt markers are also often autistic traits is fucking terrifying. Even shit as simple as having the wrong pauses or saying “um” too often on a 911 call.
@NeuroRebel
Classic dehumanization and infantilization of autistic people. Ableism and transphobia have gone hand in hand for a while now and this is by far the most blatant example of it
@AutisticCallum_
“He’s just like his father was at that age”
-my grandmother regarding me when my parents were considering getting me tested when I was ~5
@wizardsofautism
Thankfully my parents figured out my dad is autistic fairly soon after I was diagnosed as a kid. Sort of a “Well all the things he does makes sense now too”
@GGNorewrite
@kvmac2011
@roryreckons
I’m pretty sure if I had ever tried to explain how my internal monologue gets “guest actors” I’d probably have been diagnosed with something else. It’s still the same monologue, it just, sounds different sometimes
@GMaster36
Public schools have a really bad record of treating autistic kids as not quite human. I remember a few incidents like this before I was moved to another school
Also god forbid you have any sensory needs because those were absolutely not accommodated
@Natural_habitok
It’s weirdly entertaining when you cover some of the darker aspects of nature lol
(In a totally unrelated vein, any chance you’ll do meerkats sometime)
@jessiegender
Just wish they’d stuck to their guns with her parents being nobodies. Having someone like her come from really humble origins was *such* a great message and had some great thematic potential, and then, well…
@suchnerve
Wait they just do a vertical motion? That’s just looking up ffs!
(Though that does explain a few incidents of being accused of rolling my eyes when I was just looking around as one does when autistic)
@kennedytcooper
Speaking as an archaeologist, depending on how a person is buried, context could very well inform a future archaeologist that the body was trans anyways. Grave goods, if present especially could inform that. Also with cremation so prevalent, there may just not be a skeleton. 1/X
@EvanAKilgore
If it really was “never your intention” to phrase this as a child being autistic is as good as dead, then now would be a good time to delete this an make an altered version without such implications
But somehow, I doubt you will
@lasich_roger
@autistic_hannah
Please, I’m begging you, actually educate yourself because you have some of the worst takes on autistic people I’ve seen in years
@rice_rust_belt
You know, I think there’s probably some archaeologists somewhere who know enough about how Roman roads are built to make an accurate replica for testing purposes…
@SEXYDOTJPG
I’m a field archaeologist, involves a lot of working outside. Sometimes it’s digging, sometimes it’s hiking, sometimes it’s archaeological monitoring where I’m watching construction work in case there’s burials present. I even have art of my meerkat fursona doing this work!
@TheSpaceshipper
State of the art research vessel, packing the firepower of a warship and amenities of a liner, or, weed van?
(It’s not that I don’t like the Falcon, but the other one has science labs AND a bar)
@YungFandango
All those fancy optics and then the Turkish shooter is just showing up with his regular glasses, and still gets a silver medal, absolute legend!
@hi_its_annaleah
I suspect part of this may also be that, because autistic people experience fiction differently, neurotypicals may not always realize that we’re relating to it. They can be so close minded that they can’t consider our point of view.
Which is ironic given how they claim empathy
@shrimp_rider
I much prefer the takes of the likes of Star Trek, Mass Effect, and Babylon 5, where different alien races working together are the better for it, and that also cross species banging is a common occurrence!
@RoSphix
No criticisms that I can think of, I’ll drop some if I think of them since constructive criticism is good and all. But I will say, I adore this panel here so much
@ItsEmilyKaty
Find it funny how my also autistic father does the opposite and has an almost heel slamming gait, but is a sensory seeker whereas I’m more of a toe walker and typically sensory avoidant.
@JenLRossman
Yep! Multinational expedition! Going to get some neat people from different places
(If you use closed captioning *mutters in Czech* will be a regular occurrence!)
@WhatTheADHD
“Its short term memory and object permanence is kinda bad, so be prepared to misplace a lot of cups and forgetting why you entered a room. Alarms work well for reminders, but have multiple ones go off in sequence to really break the hyperfixation. Caffeine seems to help too.”
@Pinko69420
It’s the equivalent of doing psychological or anthropological research purely on populations in prison and trying to apply that to all of humanity, so yeah, extremely flawed methodology that even the original researchers denounced later
@CaseyExplosion
Alfred Bester in Babylon 5, played to perfection by Walter Koenig, who’s probably most famous as Pavel Chekhov from Star Trek. He’s a fantastic recurring villain in the series
@suchnerve
The worst part is when it’s clear you picked the wrong option, but aren’t sure what the right one was or what specific unspoken neurotypical rule was broken by your wrong choice so you can’t even correct it for future encounters
@adamfare1996
“How can you be diabetic if you’re so skinny?”
Said numerous times to me as a kid in regards to having diabetes. An annoying amount of people only know about type 2 and it’s really annoying
@hi_its_annaleah
The old myth of “autistic children don’t play” is in a similar vein. They may go about it in a different way from what is designated as “normal,” so a lot of more close-minded specialists make the false assumptions that we just don’t play.
@flowerwasaqueen
@jessicaray0
Vehicle enshitification at its finest. I’m glad my car is old enough to at least still have some knobs alongside rather than just a screen and nothing else.
@laurenancona
Oh yeah, won’t touch them to be sure. Just, you know, take their car, phone, wallet, house keys, maybe shoes for good measure. Then document the whole thing as research of course! Since effectively mugging people is apparently research these days
@ChocToothpaste
Yeah food should not be mixed unless under specific circumstances where mixing is desirable, and then it’s a thorough, deliberate mixing and not just carelessly letting them mingle on the plate.
(Used to more opaque pinto beans lol, these threw me off a bit!)
Going to take a moment this Trans Visibility Day to promote the works of two of my trans friends,
@Izzymandias1
and
@svipvl
and their respective works Frameshift and Stardust
@adamfare1996
While it can feel extremely cliche to say, Spock in TOS describing himself as in constant conflict between his human and Vulcan halves feels very relatable to being AuDHD.
@RebornRuffian12
The fey child myth is almost certainly derived from autistic children. Especially with how some neurotypical parents even today describe it like autism “stole” their children
@DrChrisCombs
Funny thing was this experiment wasn’t even by a flat earther, it’s by the channel Action Lab with the direct intention of disproving the fallacy of rockets not working in space, the flerfs just found a way to still ignore it
@justveeing
Reminder that Romulans are literally Vulcans who just don’t do the whole logic and emotional suppression thing. If you turned a human Vulcan you’d probably get something not unlike a Romulan, or those sects even in Vulcan culture that forego the purging of emotions like in ENT
@AutSciPerson
The way these people word this kind of thing always feels so dehumanizing. Like autistic people are less than fully human or incomplete somehow and there’s some very disgusting and disturbing implications that come from such an attitude.
@Kairo_Anatomika
As an archaeologist I find this an interesting perspective, though my work is focused in the southwest part of North America so I have no direct connection with Chinese archaeology
Got some absolutely delightful art of my sona having tacos al pastor from
@RoSphix
and I’m extremely happy with how it came out!
(Also I have a visual reference now for my favorite food!)
@helen_barnowl
@sensorystories_
Yeah if I ever have to do those sorts of things it’s definitely preferable to go later so I know what kind of context is actually expected
@trekkiebill
Me, as a kid watching TNG on dvd:
“Wow they were really on the nose with that one!”
Like, this has never been subtle at all, and I as a preteen kid could see that!
@north0fnorth
Petco Park in San Diego is another good example. Has a small parking lot, but mostly relies on being situated downtown and next to a major trolley station. Most people took the trolleys to get to it when there were games, and it’s how I went there when I lived in SD
@AutSciPerson
Always seems to be a self-fulfilling prophecy too since the end result usually is “well yes, now I am upset because I’ve been falsely accused of being upset!”
Especially bad when the other person knows I’m autistic
@GamingGaspa
Pineapple is delicious on pizza and some people just can’t accept that others can enjoy something they don’t. Have whatever toppings you want!
Besides, pineapple is nothing compared to what goes on down in Brazil!
