Our take : the proposal to change the definition of close contact does not change the reality of what is a close contact A close contact is a close contact not some convenient definition that the politics of a pandemic desires Don't @ us
hey
@AlboMP
, see the gap between your mask & face at the top? The virus gets in and out of there. This is why n95 or equiv are better. Do us a favour, you and your Ministers lead by example & mask up with the best mask.

we'd like to make a shout out to
@MonteBovill
for being on top of so many updates. Without him some of what we tweet just wouldn't get tweeted Doing a great job Monte & showing why Our ABC is such a vital service ๐๐๐ (ps hope you're not going on leave any time soon)
The maths is pretty simple. If a handbrake on infections is not applied then hospitals will become overwhelmed, elective surgery will grind to a halt & it will be a winter of discontent .

watch Minister Barnett's answer to this question from
@rosaliewoodruff
on deaths while ramped. "They are old" is his appalling response. This is the same attitude they apply to covid deaths. "they are old". No words.

Our post this morning about a close contact being a close contact no matter the politics of the pandemic certainly struck a cord Over a thousand likes or retweets Clearly quite a few agree ๐๐
Ok Exposure Sites!!! If you are a positive case screen shot your check in history & tweet tagging us or tweet a list with date/time of places you've been Tag us in the tweet & we will retweet

Hopefully we will keep on top of it ๐ค
Let's all give a shout out to all the frontline HCWs who have born the brunt of covid this year & will continue to do so over the festive season. They step up day after day in a healthcare system that sees ambulance ramping while faced with long shifts in PPE
Thank you ๐
remember the COVID super spreader event when an Omicron-infected man attended a NSW rave party for 3 hours & infected 200 people. So less than 4 hrs & not exactly a 'house like contact' How do the new rules deal with that?
A reminder that while masks are only required in high risk settings & the Premier has said there won't be a return to mask mandates, the CHO, Dr Veitch, STRONGLY RECOMMENDS wearing masks. Sage advice given Tasmania currently has one of the highest rates of infection in the world
it needs to be understood that the 'back to normal' narrative & winding back of basic precautions means that the elderly, disabled, immunocompromised & vulnerable are being abandoned. 'Back to normal' for the 'healthy' part of the population is not a safe place for those at risk
No longer following CHO advice ๐ค
The Vic Health Minister says Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton wanted mask mandates in early childhood, school, retail and hospitality settings for workers but she rejected his advice.
Well it is our anniversary and a time to reflect on whether there is purpose in continuing. With far less engagement, seemingly little public care for the pandemic and the increasingly deficit of information from public health & govt should we continue ๐ค
Given the number of people saying they know of cases within their orbit or, as one reporter just tweeted, seeing lots of people on their timeline saying they have C19, we think it is a fair assumption that there is a lot more infections in the community than the daily cases show
Our Opinion: The Premier & Minister for Health,
@RockliffTeam
must heed the full ATAGI & AHPPC advice, & announce that masks are required in all crowded indoor settings, plus in medical settings or services accessed by vulnerable people. We need a handbrake on infections
Tucked away in the ATAGI Statement today was advice for "increased use of masks". Will government adopt this as more than just recommending use of masks
#politas
Confused listening to the Fed Health Min on Insiders. Says the advice of CHO's is recommend masks but no mandate. AHPPC = meeting of all CHO's - strongly endorsed wearing masks, so why not mandate?
A reminder that everyone who has minimized the pandemic thus far has been wrong. No reason to believe they'll suddenly start being right esp as we start to climb the next wave
Wear masks. Avoid crowds. Filter your air. Open windows
Taking precautions should not be political.
Shout out to all the HCW sweating it out in full PPE today The staff at the testing centres spending the day in PPE The often forgotten path scientists who are processing all those PCRs for hours in full PPE 2/
we may not have a huge following but twitter analytics tells us that our tweets have appeared as 'impressions' on timeline feeds well over 100k times in the last month. That probs means we are reaching more than our 3200 followers. Happy with that
the narrative about being admitted to hospital with covid and not for covid ignores the fact that covid will complicate any admission. Had a stroke ? you don't want covid as an addition Broken hip ? you don't want covid You see where we're going with this?
PM Albanese has held his last press conference before Xmas . Not a single mention of Covid No a single shout out to our hard working HCW who face a festive season under the pump This is the 'steady state' under his Prime Ministership.
From 9 August labs will test all samples from state-run PCR clinics for COVID-19, Influ A, Influ B and RSV. This means that if you are tested on 8 August, your sample may be tested for all four viruses. From 9 August onwards, everyone will be tested for all four viruses.
On ABC News Taste of Summer struggling for patrons Stall holders worried they won't break even So desperate organisers are offering free entry Locals have voted to stay away
subvariant (BA2) of the orig Omnicron is quickly becoming variant of concern in many countries. Denmark thought it was out of the omicron wave but cases are surging again with BA2. Thought to have higher transmissibility & may infect those previously infected. One to watch
just dropped in to the local bottle O Manager working on pub hol Why? 1 or 2 staff tested positive others waiting results & in iso Will close up soon due to staffing. local cafe / coffee place closed one site for same reason We're sure this is becoming a common story
If you don't already we would really encourage watching 730 on ABC being hosted by
@latingle
at the mo. Almost every night she expertly dissects what has & is happening with the covid response You can catch up on iView
How many symptomatic haven't been able to get a PCR or RAT? How many have decided to stay home & ride it out? Numbers don't matter, hosp does! Well no, numbers inform & allow forecasts for hospitalisations. Without accurate numbers it is like flying blind & best guessing.
Blackadder: Baldrick, I have a very, very, very cunning plan
Baldrick: Is it as cunning as a fox .....
Blackadder: Yes it is We'll use RATs instead of PCR & the enemy won't know our numbers They will just be amazed at how we've contained the beast
๐๐ hoping all the best for Mary-Louise who has regularly been a considered voice throughout this pandemic Get well Mary. Our thoughts our with you.
After a severe headache Thursday, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. I will now be on a month's sick leave from UNSW and WHO. Thank you media for helping me spread knowledge. Now it is time with my family.
Best wishes to you all.
The Reff for Tas has dropped below 1 & is now 0.97 A Reff <1 means that ๐ค๐ค case numbers have peaked & we should see numbers begin to drop over the next week
@AlboMP
last press conference before Xmas & you couldn't be bothered acknowledging the lives lost to COVID & families grieving their loss. You didn't give a shout out to thank our hard working HXWs who are still under the pump. PATHETIC we say
If you are an anti-vaxxer, anti-mandates, weird science interpreter who uses our tweets to dismiss science or promote your weird version of science or promote the science nutters we will simply block. Please just go away. Thx. We've blocked a few
shout out and thanks to all the new followers over the last week From small beginnings with a definite purpose regarding exposure sites we found ourselves quickly redundant. Hopefully we remain of some use with our pivot
Masks - effective midnight Monday masks mandatory for all indoor settings, public transport, retail, supermarkets etc Strong recommend you do it from today
12 months since the borders were opened
In that time 196 Tasmanians have died with covid
More than half the population has tested positive
12 months ago there was a tepid attempt to contact trace. The system fell over very quickly
So all 3 major hospitals at escalation level 3. All with staffing issues. 2 with outbreaks on wards. As cases continue to rise what does the next escalation level mean? There can be no doubt that we are on the precipice of a crisis in hospitals
#politas
#CovidIsNotOver
totally missed this from todays presser: The situation is so bad the RHH is seeking an exemption from Public Health to allow identified close contacts to continue working at the hospital rather than forcing them into isolation. They would test daily & wear full PPE
we reckon it is not unreasonable to ask why
@RockliffTeam
& Dr Veitch haven't held a presser. 60% โฌ๏ธ in cases reported. 600% โฌ๏ธ in hospital cases Why are they not actively saying wear masks indoors? Why are they not talking about the other sequela of covid?
#politas
An observation. We continue to be in the midst of a pandemic. We are in the middle of a Federal election campaign. There has not been any acknowledgement of the former in the latter. Just saying!
as Xmas Eve closes we send a thanks to all those who follow us. We hope we have been of some use this year. A huge thanks to all our frontline HCWs. To the many who have lost love ones to this pandemic we are so so sorry for your loss & send our sincerest condolences.
Hey
@RockliffTeam
SA has released updated modelling showing the next wave peak in early December & hospitalisation peak around Xmas. 8000 cases / day. 200 hospital. When will Tasmania have updated modelling made public?
#politas
This time last year Tasmania had recorded 116 deaths
As of yesterday the total was 304
Australia wide there were 11032 death this time last year. As of yesterday approx 22700
Australia wide almost doubled
Tasmania almost tripled
Individual responsibility is failing our society. At least some modicum of collective responsibility might suppress infections to some extent and give our hospitals a breather

Vale Mary-Louise McLaws
The voice of calm methodical advice & reason from the beginning of the pandemic. A very important voice Sadly she was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 22 & died yesterday. Below are the words of one of her last tweets in 22. /
A dr has warned of the concerning effects of the JN.1 variant as it rips through younger demographics & increases hospitalisations across the US. " JN.1 has been associated with quicker progression to severe resp symptoms, even in younger populations.
whilst we are tongue in cheek with the Dear Leader parody this is actually a serious matter There are clear systems failures within DoH.
@GutweinTeam
this needs urgent resolution cc

7:20 pm still no fix
Dear Leader started this twitter to fill the void of a lack of exposure site alerts from the DoH on SM. Tracing has been exposed as a pretence & the new definition means it is now 'hunger game rules' so we are now redundant May the odds be ever in your favor
we thought that with NY Eve it was timely to award the COVID Shonky for the worst opinion of the year. There have been plenty of contenders but we think this wins hands down Congrats
How is covid tracking. No weekly stats so we don't know BUT ... Bendigo Bank had a sign up about staff shortages due to 'illness'. A number of shops around Launnie with signs up saying closed due to covid. Rumoured big outbreak in NW Hospital. RHH reinstating masks. ๐ค
The peak body, the AHPPC, said that any venue or event that saw significant transmission should be considered a close contact site yet Party in the Apocalypse has not been added to the exposure site list Why
@GutweinTeam
?
From 1 July DoH will stop publishing the daily tablet of stats. The daily stats will still be published on
We will ensure that the stats are published here on a daily basis.
We find this decision disappointing especially with rising BA4/5
#politas
As kids return to school,
@mehdirhasan
asks: What was the real impact of school closures during the height of the pandemic? Mehdi busts some disturbingly widespread myths about the *real* harms COVID brought to American children and schools. WATCH:
spare a thought not just for those HCWs in full PPE for an entire shift caring for covid patients but all the clinical staff now spending their entire shift in full PPE
the current wave might end or significantly drop over the next month or so & there will be relief for our HCW but this won't be the last. It won't be suddenly over There will be more variants & waves and more hospital stress.
#CovidIsNotOver
just saw a picture posted from a leading medical specialty conference being held on our little island Not a single mask to be seen. So good that our medical professionals are showing leadership ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
Victoria is mandating reporting of positive RAT either online or by phone to the Vic Health Department Will Tassie follow this lead?

A N95 Christmas. That's how you do it! Not sure what the current status is for mask wearing in our hospitals. Hoping it is the same. Certainly isn't happening in many GP clinics
From everyone at the RMH: Merry Christmas!
Our dedicated elves/nurses/docs are on duty if you need, but we would love to hear that you are safe with your loved ones at home.
Stay safe, plan ahead and drink responsibly. For emergencies, please dial 000.
No matter your politics if you are interested in COVID & it's management there can be no denying that
@CassyOConnorMP
has been dogged in raising questions about covid management in this state When the govt has "moved on" she has been focussed Thank You
RHH exec are grateful that staff have responded to the call to return to work allowing them to open additional 25 beds. You'd have to ask why they didn't have those beds already available given we are in the middle of the 4th covid wave of the year
48 hrs since any exposure sites were listed other than 'low risk' flights & boat Probably safe to assume that any pretence to contact tracing has been extinguished. Personal responsibility Any symptoms take a RAT & if +'ve get a PCR!
#covid19tas
we'd like to come back to this.
there is not a PH prof anywhere who would say being with a mate who is +ve in a pub for half hour is not a close contact. In our view, this example used by the Premier highlights the mockery of the definition being used
Premier : reinforcing criteria for close contact ie the household 4 hour rule (used example of going to pub with mates for 1/2 hr - your not a close contact!!!)
