We're in the top 40!
It's not every day that a working class lad from up North gets to share a list with the likes of Sabine Weyand & Tony Blair.
Grateful beyond words to be recognised in the
@POLITICOEurope
list of 'Power 40' influencers in Brussels.
@ClimateHuman
The role of climate scientist and activist is incompatible.
How could anyone trust your conclusions to be neutral, objective and rooted in research, if you have a clearly stated political agenda?
Scientists look for the answer. Activists have the answer in their mind already.
#Zelensky
says that
#Ukraine
has earned
#EU
membership.
He is absolutely right. Ukrainians have shed blood for freedom, democracy and European values - far more than the dithering profiteering governments of Berlin and Rome.
Grant Ukraine membership today.
@JustStop_Oil
Oil and gas executives operate within the law. The whole point of your actions is that you wish to change the law.
You, however, operate outside of our laws and society. You deem our cherished democratic process to be beneath you and too bothersome to deal with.
@jburnmurdoch
In each of these countries, the term 'conservative'and 'liberal' means something completely different.
A British conservative is unrecognisable to a German or an American.
Not to mention that they're hugely broad umbrella terms.
Nothing of value in this graph.
@gallardo_ortega
This is NUTS. There are very very very good reasons that heads of states take private aeroplanes and cars - security first and foremost.
Should we mandate that all attendees wear target signs on their back, whilst we are at it?
Correct. Europe more than played its part in Brexit.
There's a wider tendency amongst
#FBPE
types to believe that the EU is faultless, both in of itself, and of its behavior during Brexit, which isn't born out by reality.
There was a clear and obvious desire to punish the UK.
This is ridiculous.
We have a senior regulator targeting one particular business and one particular individual, over and over, in public, to gain attention and likes on Twitter.

When I emigrated to Belgium, I absolutely struggled to access public services until I learned the language.
You'll often find yourself just not engaging with anything because you can't speak the language.
Assimilation and language learning is good for the recipient.
Good morning to everyone except Belgian politicians mewling about resource scarcity, despite the highest tax burden in Europe.
The idea that the Police dont have the resources to arrest people openly using crack, at midday, in the capitals busiest train station, is wild.

Pragmatically, we cannot allow a world in which states invade each other without consequence. We would make ourselves less secure by turning a blind eye.
Morally, the Ukrainian people have a right to determine their destiny, even if there are extensive corruption problems.

Those who believe in a small state and sensible, pragmatic government have no business defending a PM who consistently broke the draconian rules that he imposed on everyone.
Whichever way you voted in 2019, he must go.
This is enormous.
The EU doesn't realise that what it can do to others, others can do to it.

How will you change the agreed content of the CO2 regulation without sending it back to the Parliament?
Completely cutting out one of the EU bodies to make a fundamental and substantial change at the last second is wildly undemocratic.

The most blatant attack on freedom of speech for many years.
Some highly politicised, radical mayor, declares Nigel Farage and Suella Braverman the 'extreme right' and orders the police in, but is quite happy to let pro-Palestine protestors call for death to Israel.
Chilling.

Most Europeans realise at some point that they can have the same job in the United States for three times the pay, a quarter of the taxes, and a vastly higher quality of life.
We cope by claiming that the gap is made up for by healthcare costs, but it's just not true.
How on earth can someone be, at the same time:
1 - An illegal migrant;
2 - A known 'candidate for jihad' and human trafficker;
3 - Known to the authorities;
4 - Walking the streets freely?
Why do we have to put up with this?

In my opinion, the next European Commission should stop making regulation entirely.
Instead, it should spend the next mandate cutting legislation that makes no sense, rewriting poor legislation, and focusing on streamlining Europe as much as possible.
Friendly reminder to all Brussels friends to take your Vitamin D tablets, and to plan a mid-February holiday.
Low cloud cover in Belgium means significantly less sunlight than normal. You need to adapt.
If I, from rainy Manchester, suffer, then you, from South Europe, do more.
I wish half as much Brussels expat 'community activism' went into making neighbourhoods safe, as making them bike friendly.

About half of Flagey is given over to meth users, Matonge has become much more unsafe, and Namur metro is hell on earth.

I think you have a very externally focused idea of attraction - in your description you talk about your looks and money, but not about what makes you you.
That'll get you matches, if you want dates you need to let your personality shine through!

And excellent and principled position to take on the unprovoked invasion of another country. Very responsible.
How is Indias border with China doing, by the way?
@Crimea
I prefer 'The Russian War of Unprovoked Conquest' to 'Russia-Ukraine War'.
The latter implies that Ukraine had some sort of agency in being invaded.
@TiceRichard
A genuinely awful take.
Your arguments for brexit were based on the will of the people, this is literally unelected judges imposing it on a populace who 80% support membership. How long did you spend saying nasty things about Gina Miller for doing something similar?
In past years, this has absolutely been me.
If anyone in Brussels ever feels like this, please just drop me a DM and we can go for a beer together.

I don't think Brussels is a rainy city - its a tropical paradise compared to my native Manchester.
Southern Europeans refuse to speak to me.
Wanting to feel safe in public areas = fascism 😂
We give the state 55% of our income (unless you work in the institutions) and in return, the police refuse to enter the metros or certain areas of the city.

But I'm so excited to start a new adventure.
Too many Europeans mindlessly sealclapping this on my feed.
FREEDOM. OF. SPEECH.
I largely disagree with NatCons (too big state for me) but they ABSOLUTLEY have the right to meet and discuss.
This ham-fisted attempt at suppression just rose them 5 points in the polls.
Dumb.

This is my experience too.

I've lived in the EU for 10 years.
I campaigned for remain, both as a Cameronite and then in the PV campaign.
I was working in the European Parliament for the Lib Dems at the time of Brexit.
But if you say something that doesn't fit with the

@alemannoEU
what on earth were you thinking, man?
Criticising the EU for taking the side of the victims of a terrorist attack, and not showing enough love to the rapists and murderers?
You've ceded all moral authority to dare call yourself the 'good' lobby.

Frankly, it's a dangerous time to be in the UK industry.
Its clear that as the EU and US are ramping up subsidies for their own industry, smaller third markets will wither and fail to keep up.
I'm prone to being overdramatic, but the UK car industry faces a massive challenge.
Subsidies provided by the EU, US, and China are also problematic for the UK car industry, we aren't going to be competing on who has the deepest pockets, so we need some better offer on why invest in the UK, which we don't really have at the moment.
Many celebrating the Commission's intervention here. These are very short sighted and bad takes.
We need to stop setting the precedent that institutional norms, such as political neutrality, can be violated if some deem it good enough.
One day, the cause won't be one you like.
This is simply wrong

The EP has a corruption scandal, but you don't get to lecture anyone about it.
@daniel_freund
Come on Daniel - I'm no fan of Orban by any means, but he's clearly using 'skin' to paint an image of nationality being an unremovable part of oneself and ones identity.
To jump from that to 'skin is being made a political concept' is just a bad-faith reading.

She was the only candidate on the ballot because the procedure is that the European Council selects a candidate (from many), and then the European Parliament votes to ratify their selection.
Many such procedures in democracies.

Youre completely correct.

Politicians are defined by integrity and policies in the long run, not slick comms or a single bad interview.

The biggest failure of EU 'mainstream' journalism is the carte blanche given to NGOs.
If I stand on Square de Meeus, I can see dozens of zealously left wing NGOs, with zero transparency and murky funding.
This Omerta is part of the reason

Many Europeans are shocked by people taking internal flights in Japan (and then think nothing of flying from Paris to Berlin 😂), the space perception is way off.
Great to see serious investment in Brussels journalism.
Euractiv is a vital part of the media landscape reporting on EU affairs - great journalists and knowledge of the bubble and beyong.
Can we talk for a second about how whack the post-Qatargate fallout is?
1: MEPs take big sacks of cash from a third country
2: Former MEP sets up an NGO to facilitate the delivery of big bags of cash to MEPs
3: MEPs decide that industry lobbyists are the real problem!

I had to learn Dutch as part of my Belgian integration.
'Hallo mijn naam is Connor en ik kom uit engeland' is simply not a foreign language.
Literally more understandable than people from Middlesborough. Anglos through and through.
Belgians *hate* making money:
- Worst customer service in the developed world;
- Need to take a day off work to be able to go to the shops;
- Everyone is on strike all the time;
- Seeking a monopoly is a viable form of staving off your competitors;
Classic shopping on a Saturday in

I spend my time saving the climate by delivering electric vehicles, saving the economy by protecting the automotive industry, and saving the EU by pushing for transparency.

The worst thing about Brussels is that no one cares about anything. This was preventable with such small effort.

Belgian media reported that four people were injured in the shooting, which took place on Avenue de la Toison d’Or.

The same logic used to justify Ireland refusing to fight the nazis, I believe.
Sometimes there are values worth fighting for away from home - defending Ukraine from an aggressive territory grab + genocide is one.
Not one cyclist on Rue de la Loi respects pedestrian priority (enforced by bicycle-specific traffic lights, also ignored).
Cyclists should have licences with points, just like all the responsible road users.
