@KateFlood
This is an incredible reach out to women & children by women all over England tonight. Moving but so awful that it’s needed. Post match domestic abuse very real.
@KateFlood
Give me strength. Never heard Iona Institute/No side speaking out about 3.5k homeless children, waiting lists for children with disabilities or mental health or help for lone parents. All I think of is Bessborough & the septic tanks of Tuam.
#VoteYes
to end hypocrisy Friday
Today is my last day as a member of the 25th Seanad. Over the last four years in Seanad Éireann I did my best to put the honour and gift of my appointment into public service for the benefit of the people and groups whose lives and daily struggles are often not seen or heard.
@Theholisticpsyc
@VKennefick
Assume you include fathers too as parents not just mothers? Are you challenging glorification of “working dads” or the push of long hours culture? Or housing policies that require both parents to work long hoursor the poverty of non working parents? What did you do yourself?
Finland is a small country like Ireland. If homelessness can be ended there, it can end here. It’s all about our priorities, having the right policies and political will
0.08% of population experience homelessness in Finland according to latest official PIT count. This includes people forced to stay with family/friends because of lack of alternative housing.
Who does better??
Delighted that
@Love1solidarity
appointed to Seanad. Eileen as a proud traveller woman & she brings with her a crucial perspective. Know she will be a brave & important voice for change. Well done
@MichealMartinTD
. Best wishes to all the other Taoiseach’s nominees too
@UCCSUWelfare
I started
@UCC
42 years ago today. Money was tight but never ever this bad. Appalled UCC students now need a food bank. But with for profit student accommodation, rents out control & fee hikes not surprised. These young people will not FORGIVE or FORGET. Government beware
@UCCSU
Great to host so many Women Traveller Activists at Leinster House today. Legends all fighting everyday for Traveller rights. By next visit hope
@Taoiseach
will have appointed Traveller to Seanad Eireann
@itmtrav
@SbellsDell
@LucyNorrish40
Don’t think it’s fair to comment about people about their appearance or how old they look. All too often a judgement of women in politics. Plenty of other things to criticise like polices, politics and being a member of a party that has done so much damage
Remembering the dead of Srebrenica today. 25 years since a terrible slaughter of men and boys because of their religion. Visited the graves when on a Council of Europe monitor. Sadness hung in the air. Chilling, tragic and shameful.
@Peston
A horror show that Tories made. Austerity with Cameron & Osborne, Brexit with May & Johnson, Chaos with Truss & Kwarteng, Calamity and more poverty with Sunak & Hunt. Emigration dog whistles to distract. Meanwhile more hungry children & cold homes. A tragedy for British people
"Thinking and actions around Traveller employment is too small minded, not ambitious enough nationally and does not reflect a serious approach to supporting an indignenous ethnic minority group" - Brigid Quilligan of Kerry Travellers Health Community Development Project
On day
#GE2020
called I want to thank Ministers, TDs, Senators, staff & comrades from Civil Society. In this Oireachtas we worked together on...abortion care, home care, dementia care, rights & recognition for Travellers, Refugees, ppl with disabilities and so much more..❤️🙏🍀
Traveller History & Culture must be taught in Ireland & taught well.
@NCCAie
has taken some important steps but need to speed up. Great Senator Eileen Flynn
@Love1solidarity
will push Minister for Education to pass the bill for Ireland to come onto line with Council Of Europe
The Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers has adopted a Recommendation that for the first time ever calls on its 47 member states to include the history of Travellers and Roma in school curricula and teaching materials.
@jenoconnell
Had some conversations about how tragic events in Lixnaw could have been prevented. Proper sentencing for violence in the family home would be a start, sending a clear message that such acts are a crime with consequences. That this man was ‘hardworking’ is neither here nor there
@gavreilly
@anitambyrne
@AnneRabbitte
@AnneRabbitte
is one of the most hardworking & concerned Ministers in this government. She is genuinely listening & genuinely trying to find answers through dialogue. Not meeting or not talking will not make the everyday challenges of disabled and autistic people disappear.
People are being treated as litter.. what have we come to? Irrelevant that this man was supposed to be “known to homeless services”...what exactly does that imply? That the poor person brought it on himself to be living in a tent and be swept up as ‘rubbish’ . Shocking & shameful
Why is our state giving in to the bigots? Government needs to stand up & be counted. “Prejudice has no place in our Republic” Time for
@LeoVaradkar
to make good on his words.
Plans to house 13 asylum seekers in Achill postponed due to ongoing protest outside hotel. The asylum seekers who were meant to move there had hotel cleaning staff knocking on their doors to tell them that they won't be moving. Limbo!

When are we going to move on from writing report after report about the discrimination that Travellers experience day in day out in our country. And do something about it that makes a difference. Time for deeds not words
@PaveePoint
@_IHREC
@MichealMartinTD
@Love1solidarity
The report found that one in ten Travellers, including children, report “going to bed hungry” at least once in the last month, rising to a fifth in some countries surveyed
@JohnJCrace
Following & logic is where you went wrong my friend. Now if you said self serving manoeuvring & making it up as you are going along you’d be grand
@JaneWinward
@SocialHousingCo
So so so depressing a woman looking good is something seen as threatening, dangerous, provocative & has to be hidden away. We really have a long long way to go
@GCraughwell
@EvelynSpring8
Hi
@GCraughwell
. Disagree with you here. Lived in London very happily for almost 20 years. Cultural stereotyping limiting, annoying, reductionist & problematic for ethnic minorities. Majoritarian dismissals on grounds of ‘hypersensitivivity’ misses the point of power imbalance
Lots and lots of Cork

voters on Patrick St today. Chatting with one woman who took a leaflet. We started talking about the 170,000 Irish women who had to travel..... "I was one of them" she said. Her eyes welled up, Let's do it for her on 25 May

"Can you believe that in this day and age...out of 424 Traveller Individuals in East Limerick, that only 29 are over 50, worse still only 3 over the age of 65, one of these is my own father" - Nora Mooney, Kilmallock Traveller Women's Group

Tragic loss of 23 people in a few short weeks in a Dundalk Nursing Home, a third of all who lived there. Serious questions to be answered. Would be good to hear as a matter of urgency from
@HSELive
@hiqa
on what happened & what’s in place now to prevent more deaths in such places
Statement here. Great news for Cork mothers and children. Bessborough nuns stepping back and gifting the land. Much needed cutting edge childcare and family support services are saved. A big relief for talented staff too in limbo these past months
Proud to sponsor & champion gamechanging Traveller Culture & History in Education Bill & hoping to get it over the line in Seanad on Wednesday . Asking all Senators to send a strong Bill to Dail & for

& TDs from all parties to turn into law

Hancock is a spoofer of the highest order and no idea of what is right or wrong. Or cares even less Perfect for Boris & crew. Moral bankruptcy at every turn. Pity poor England & the best of what is British. So many decent people let down. A tragedy
Let’s stop calling people “clients”, “service users”, “patients” or “customers”. Let’s stop hiding behind cold language & professional clap trap to create barriers & hierarchies. Let’s listen to and talk about “people” just people & make common cause in solidarity with them
So glad Traveller Culture & History Bill I introduced in Seanad in July has prompted Minister Bruton to take action on curriculum. Welcome also his commitment to address low levels of secondary school completion among Traveller children
@itmtrav
Father Peter McVerry told

HIQA should be given the responsibility to inspect homeless services.
He thinks if that was to happen a lot of hostels would "be closed down overnight", describing situations of heroin use & violent incidents happening in shared rooms.
Lit some candles for right decision to

The good book says that the Christmas decorations MUST stay up til 6 Jan! Otherwise we make the Three Wise Men (as if), baby Cheeses & the wee donkey very cross, and not a day’s luck either!

Public transfers of vast sums to private landlords for insecure and inadequate housing pure waste. Government is scamming us with this ‘bad deal’, ‘bad value’ housing policy. Needs to be phased out with investment in public housing on public land instead
@Arrivalists_
Patrick. Thank you for sharing this story. It actually made me cry. Honouring your mother by taking a little less and giving a family a forever home, like you and your family had. Beautiful. Generous. ❤️
@Colmogorman
Never ending systemic abuse of power worldwide. Picked on powerless - indigenous people, children, women. Church yet to face up to wrongs and trauma caused. Yet to atone. Recent ‘sins’:Trying to sell off children’s burial ground or renege on promises for Traveller homes for cash
Wish I had been a regular at Suoermacs so I could boycott it now. Terrible attitude to the very people who make Pat McDonagh’s millions for him. Live and let live
Why are we listening to Lucinda on RTE???? I don’t care what she thinks. About anything. Proven time & again to be out of touch and out of step with ‘regular citizens’. Certainly wouldn’t be turning to her for any political strategising or wisdom
Arif’s death is a tragic and unnecessary loss of a young man’s life. This week in Scotland a destitute woman seeking asylum died of starvation with her one year old baby in her arms. Shameful for countries as rich as ours to treat people like this. May both RIP
Today I moved Traveller Culture & History in Education Bill onto Seanad Order Paper. Seconded by
@SenLynnRuane
and
@GraceOSllvn
. Bill will be debated next week. I am looking for cross party to support for this important legislation
@itmtrav
@SeanadCEG
Ask any Traveller? Harsh words, hate speech, prejudice and discrimination are everyday realities. Only 1 in 10 non Traveller employers would offers Travellers a job. 80%+ unemployment. Anti Traveller sentiment is very much an ‘acceptable’ racism in today’s Ireland
@ColetteKelleher
@johnconnors1990
I dont see how travellers could be racially profiled? Discriminated against yes, but are people racist against travellers? Not that I know of.
@saoirse_mchugh

has been doing lots of work on vacant & derelict sites. Some great ideas. Must be big penalties for owners letting places fall into neglect. So many beautiful old buildings in Cork city centre have literally crumbled & fallen down. Could have been homes. A no brainier

@BorisJohnson
What do Boris & his cronies care? Not a button nor a fig. In his deluded grandeur BoJo got his heart’s desire. No 10 via Brexit! Nothing else mattered in his blond ambition. Cynicism writ large. Incompetence too. Pity all the decent people under his sway... god help them all

I was honoured to be the Rapporteur for the Seanad Public Consultation Committee which reported in January 2020. The first recommendation was to appoint a Traveller to Seanad Eireann. I hope our new Taoiseach

for announcing ring-fenced Dormant Accounts funding to support Traveller access to and ability to remain in higher education. A step in the right direction
What a cruel and eventful month November 1920 was ..Bloody Sunday, Terence MsSwiney & Kevin Barry’s deaths, Kilmichael Ambush to mention a few. The Burning of Cork to follow in a few short weeks. What a torrid, turbulent and momentous time. Makes our 2nd lockdown look quite tame
Over 100,000 Irish women have travelled to the UK to access abortion. These women are politicians, teachers, nurses, waitresses and full time carers. They are our mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and work colleagues. They are people we know, people we love. Women we let down.
Congratulations Respond! Keep these beautiful ‘forever’ homes coming...so much more than bricks and mortar. The fabric of people’s ability to live decent lives

Good to see Gardai enforcing the law for the offence we fought so hard to get onto the statute books. Coercive Control is abuse and those who do it commit a crime and should be subject to the full force of the law.
