Brought the cailíní to Dublin for a few days and seriously what has happened our capital city? It's derelict, filthy, rubbish everywhere and gangs of intimidating people hanging around, many clearly off their heads. Not a nice place to be esp with young children. Feels v unsafe.
As someone who experienced (not recently) a 12 wk scan alone & being told baby had no heartbeat I can say that forcing women to experience trauma like this is reckless, unacceptable, and will have long term consequences- Shame on HSE, Gov & everyone else allowing this to continue
I see the children's shoes section is closed off again in Dunnes. This really annoys me - I can buy a scented candle but shoes for my children are non essential.
It is simply not possible to be a barrister in Ireland unless you are very well off - especially if you are not from Dublin. If we want a diverse legal community and a diverse judiciary this has to change.
It's been such a shite few weeks. Today we had to say slán to Ollie. My little shadow for the past 12 years. He sat on my lap while I wrote my PhD & saw me through so many changes.He was really the best boy ever - we were lucky to have him.
FG TDs keep repeating on radio this eve that JAAB 'recommended' Woulfe - JAAB doesn't recommend - it simply decides whether any candidates who apply are qualified/suitable or not. It does not assess candidates or rank them.
Also it makes no sense whatsoever to have 2 separate organisations. When I went to register online as a parent, once I clicked female gender for myself I could not register for regular club, only option available was LGFA, even if my child was male. 🤔
When offered choice of home/hosp burial/crem for my baby (or the products of conception as they referred to it) I chose home burial but having heard nothing for a few weeks I contacted them to be told it had not been separated from 'the waste' and that 'happens'.
An investigation is under way at Cork University Maternity Hospital after multiple baby organs were incinerated abroad without the consent or knowledge of bereaved parents,

Hard to avoid the conclusion that the full Woulfe transcripts have caused even further damage to the admin of justice. Public confidence will take a long time to recover.

I am overwhelmed by the response to this tweet which has resonated with so many. Im grateful to everyone who took the time to get in touch and share their stories. So many have experienced this grief and agree that it should be acknowledged and spoken about.

What a mess! Why didn't the Gov just listen when warned about proceeding with this wording? So disappointing for all those who have worked to reform these areas for years. Here I am giving out about it on the
@RTEOne
#Referendum
programme this morning:
Amazed at the number of ppl (mostly men) taking what I said as a personal insult. I don't care what org is responsible - simply pointing out how ridiculous it is girls pay more than double to play same game. (Yes it is the same game - don't @ me)
He's done it!
@TomasJHeneghan
has won his case in the Supreme Court on votes in Seanad elections. 🥳🥳🥳waiting for the details - I've never been so excited to read a judgment! I have a feeling it's going to be very interesting
Well done

Pics 20 yrs apart. We are married 6.5 yrs but today we are celebrating 20 yrs together - friends even longer. Literally childhood sweethearts. Not sure how I got so lucky! 🥰
My just turned 7yo has designed her own wrapping paper out of some packing paper that arrived with a delivery and I think it is the best wrapping paper ever
Some unhelpful contributions from TDs in the Dáil just now on the judicial appointments issue. Why is there such a poor understanding of the separation of powers amongst our legislators?
Anything to be said for a mandatory course in Const law for all sitting TDs and Senators?
I teach Const law
@UL
where we learn about balancing rights & restrictions, the proportionality doctrine and the role of the court and Oireachtas in balancing/protecting rights. Happy to explain how this all works to Gov officials who seem too afraid of the Const to do anything.
Academic peer-review is so random at times. I just had an article accepted with no revisions after previously being rejected by 2 other journals, once with no reasons.
The hardest part of being an ECR is dealing with the rejection - important to know that it happens to us all!
This is a ridiculous position for Gov to take - answering questions about the process which led to the Woulfe appointment is not only appropriate but absolutely necessary and not at all ‘questionable’ in light of current context.
Now maybe it is a difficult thing to do and possibly that does happen but I had not been told this in advance, was expecting to have (was told I could have)some sort of burial so was pretty traumatic to be told it had basically been dumped.
Needs to be more respect here.
Just strolling around Dublin Castle on the day when 100 years ago it was 'surrendered' and so began the events leading to the free Irish State. Looking forward to the conference later

On judicial apmts reform -
@SenatorMcDowell
has done a lot of damage on this convincing people that the system is fit for purpose. There are endemic problems with the current system - here is a quick summary
1. JAAB currently has no role in vacancy for pres of a court
Just back frm a month's annual leave - no emails or research (highly recommended!). But looking at emails now, many begin: 'I can see you're on leave but can you just ...' (not frm students) We need to normalise taking a proper break from work, incl not responding to emails!
I don't normally post this content but so proud of this gang. I've been training this little group of 8 yr olds in 2/3 part harmonies for the past few months & we had a concert last night. How brilliant are they?

Before I would never speak as Gaeilge to someone unless I knew they were fluent but recently I have discovered that if you use a little Gaoluinn to ppl they will try to use a little back - even those not from Ire, and it is so lovely! Tús maith mar a dearfá! 😃
This has been a huge mis-step by the Taoiseach and is only feeding the narrative of those arguing the amendment will place the responsibility of care on the family and is designed to absolve the State of any duty - when actually the amendment would do no such thing
IMPORTANT: Leo Varadkar accidentally said the quiet part out loud in the below video. He has urged people not to share this clip under any circumstances. Thank you.
This narrative ignores the fact because Ireland has not had any native judicial training system, judges, if they want to upskill, have no option only to travel to do it. Also, it is important that our judges are involved in international events, and ...

Just discovered I have been cited by Hogan J in his latest (excellent) article in the 2021 Irish Jurist - 'Re-examining McGee, Norris and the X case'.
I think that counts as a good day's work!

Very excited to hear of Gerard Hogan's nomination to the Supreme Court - his astute judgment has been missed from Irish law. He will be a fantastic addition to the Court.
If i had a vote in
#DBS21
I would certainly cast it for
@ivanabacik
She is a campaigner, a believer, a do-er and the Dáil would be better with her in it.
I do hope Barrett J's practice of explaining his judgments will catch on. Judgments must necessarily use legal and complicated language but it is such a thoughtful exercise to then explain it is ordinary language for the person involved.
Const law academics field trip to the Supreme Court. Brilliant questions by the judges at the Art 26 ref today. Such a pity it's not being live streamed so everyone can see the process- fascinating case!
You know when it's week 5 and you're at that stage in the semester when you're fit for bed by 11AM, it's time to break out the pretty shoes for a bit of a boost 😁
'I just need to look at this book' she says, (wearing her princess outfit) 'coz it has all the things I need to know in it'.
The book is of course 'Byrne & McCutcheon on the Irish Legal System' - so she's quite right! 😁
Why does everyone always automatically assume that the Constitution is going to be a barrier?
We need to stop this 'Constitution says no' nonsense as a reaction to every new proposal on anything.
It is pretty amazing that this issue is only coming to a head now because
@HMcEntee
is taking a stand (maternity leave!). Ultimately we’re looking at a referendum down the line.
Forcing Helen McEntee to resign for having a baby would be appalling
Another thread on the Seamus Wolfe issue: Lots of people seem to be calling on the CJ to take action but he has no legal or other authority to force Mr Justice Wolfe to resign. The most he can do is to have a conversation about his position.
In December it will be 100 years since the enactment of Independent Ireland's first Constitution and the birth of the modern Irish State. To mark this

Every year my Granda would make us a beautiful Christmas wreath for our door. This is our first Christmas without both Nana and Granda so I decided to make a wreath for their grave using mostly bits from the garden as he used to do. I think they'd like it.
My colleagues and I felt we had to write this letter in response to the confusion and misinformation on the phrase 'durable relations' to explain it is not about creating a new legal relationship akin to marriage - contrary to what some are saying. We hope people find this useful
Alongside 13 colleagues from law schools around Ireland, I wrote this letter to the Irish Times to try and clear up some misunderstandings about the forthcoming amendment on the constitutional definition of Family and “durable relationships”. 1/
Really looking forward to getting stuck into this and to working with

this morning since they quoted me on the front page. Great article from

with some really surpring quotes from Woulfe transcript.
If the Gov wants these referendums to pass, it should admit it got the wording wrong and fix it rather than approving poor wording tomorrow and risk a negative result.
An event to mark the Centenary of the 1922 Constitution and the birth of the modern Irish State will take place 5th Dec in

Low points of 2022 incl 2nd miscarriage in 6 months or serious health-scare associated with the first, but there were so so many high points too - inc this beautiful sunset swim after hiking Coomasatharn in Aug. It's the simple things - so much to be thankful for! Here's to 2023.
This is a cop-out! The wording 'strive to support care' means no legal obligation & the proposal to recognise family beyond the marital family is dropped. Not what the Citizens' Assembly voted for! How frustrating!
Very proud supervisor today! 🥳 Great job Saoirse - it was been an honour to supervise you on this project. And thanks to
@TomHickeyDCU

@PaulMcCLaw
for a very thoughtful viva and to
@drlauradon

So much confusion out there on these referendums and the thing is - people do want accurate information, they just don't know where to get it or who to believe, given the amount of misinfo circulating.
Wouldn't it be useful to have a basic course on the Constitution for schools?
Wonderful to have such a large and engaged attendance at our referendum information event last night. Young people are clearly interested in informing themselves on how best to use their votes. Great to hear some insights from retired Chief Justice Clarke too.
The
@CitizAssembly
has also voted to amend Article 41 so that its protection is not limited to the marital family.
This is a major recommendation and will result in crucial change if it is implemented - hopefully it will!

now about planning policy in the Gaeltacht. Despite the grand rhetoric, this State has never taken seriously the need to preserve Gaeltacht regions.
Judging by this discussion just now - there is huge amount of confusion on the Art 41.2 issue.

For the 3rd time in recent weeks I've been asked to do a media slot, spent time discussing with researcher, made arrangements etc only to be told a few days later I'm no longer needed. My good will in agreeing to do these things in the first place is seriously waning.
