White people in Ireland need to understand that we have an unearned privilege simply being white. Let’s examine our own biases on International Migrant’s Day.
Delighted with the sensible grass cutting from Cork City Council. Walking in Clashduv Park yesterday I could walk on the grass verge if necessary but other areas left wild for our pollinators.
@corkcitycouncil
People in Ballincollig are being told by some of their cllrs that this would never work in Irl. Why not? We have turned our children into the backseat generation & are developing diseases of a sedentary lifestyle because of this thinking.

Thanks to

for publishing my letter on safety for people who want to cycle. Making it illegal for someone to cycle without a helmet or high vis will not make it safer for them. What's needed is a reallocation of road space and lower speeds.
With the
@corkcitycouncil
local elections complete I spent time last night taking down my posters. I want to thank my family & supporters & those who voted for me. I wish the new councillors all the very best.
I voted against this disposal for the simple reason that this moved public open space into private hands & reduces the biodiversity of the area. Other solutions should have been found to the access & fire escape issue imo.
Urban planning at its best. Road design with all modes considered not just cars. Seating built in everywhere. Utrecht puts people & community first
@corkcitycouncil
Went for my walk this morning along College Road. This is the pile of poster ties that I took down from poles. Whoever is in Government next can we please come up with a better system for postering?

A reminder that Amsterdam wasn’t Amsterdam until it was Amsterdam.
The famed “bike capital” of the world was once as car-choked as the worst Western cities.
It wasn’t until the 1980s that planners and politicians advanced an agile, car-reduction policy.
Thanks to
@frank_oconnor
&
@judesherry
for passionately pointing out that vacancy & dereliction is not normal. Compulsory rental & sale should be done now. We just need the political will to do it.
Delighted that we are some way to getting more safe cycling routes in Cork. Thanks to all the campaigners that put their energy into pushing for this infrastructure.
Thank you so much to everyone in Cork NW who voted for me. Congratulations to the count staff, my team, the incumbents who were re-elected. I will continue to argue for gender equality, a circular economy that leaves no one behind.

Great news from the OPW that the winter solstice is to be live streamed in 2020. The pandemic means that everyone can see this wonderful event. Hopefully we will get a clear morning.

local area committee budget. Pays for small jobs that are often hard to get the money for.
Hear hear for Michael Healy Rae. We don’t often agree but the Government needs to do more about the ‘faceless cowards’ & other intimidatory behaviour that has been ‘normalised’ too often. Bullies should not be tolerated.
Travelling with

Have you a question about your bike? Or do you want to ask about cycling. Join us this morning on the Coal Quay. Here until 11amish
@CorkCyclingCrew
Almost two-thirds of residents say Cork must transform into a more sustainable city. This really is good news. However, the pausing of the Maglin Greenway in Ballincollig, flies in the face of what people want.
It was such a joy to be in the Netherlands recently where cycling with your child if the norm. Public infrastructure there is designed so that this can happen. Why not here in Ireland?
#BetterByBike
Good news! 🚴♀️🚴♂️

I am seeing renewed interest in safe cycling infrastructure. Parents want their children to be able to cycle safely in this fine weather. Let’s do it. If the political will is there we can make this a lovely safe city.

It is a shame that students at UCC need to camp out on the Quad. They are protesting at the rent increase at UCC accommodation. Many students cannot afford rents in Cork. There is something very wrong when people cannot afford a place to live.

Sorry about this. Default person in this world is a bloke. We need to start talking about sex disaggregated data. Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez documents the damage being done to women from this thinking.

We don’t do accountability well in Ireland. I understand that some people ignore the rules with an ‘ah sure’ shrug. But we have to stop allowing that to be acceptable at an Oireachtas committee. Thanks for your work advocating for Owenacurra residents

'Where do you think you are?'
Hmmmm. A frustrating session with the Mental Health Commission at the Disability Matters committee this morning.
The residents of Owennacurra deserve more clarity on steps the Mental Health Commission is taking on behalf of the residents

You may not like candidate quotas but they are the only thing that will achieve gender balance in politics in Ireland. We’ve tried voluntary quotas and they don’t work.

Very pleased to see public bike scheme being repaired. Used the Patrick St/Academy St station today. It had been out of action. Also new screens being installed thanks
@corkcitycouncil
We need a complete step change on cycling in Cork. Today on College Rd I was overtaken by a van which then had to stop. College Rd is a pedestrian and cycling priority zone which we promised our healthcare workers. When I challenged him he told me to f**k off. Charming eh!

Hopefully coming to Cork soon. They will have designated zones for drop off so won’t be a hazard for people with impaired vision or pedestrians.
We need to learn from the Dutch. They’re so far ahead of us on active transport. With nearly 9 out of 10 young people not taking enough exercise we need to act now
@corkcitycouncil
"Cycling on the footpath" and "cycling through red lights" aren't huge issues in the NLs.
They designed it out yrs ago.
And you want to get people out of cars?
Design so that people and bikes take priority.
Delighted to be selected for Cork North West in the forthcoming General election. We need more women to put themselves forward for election so that the public have the choice.
Great to see the cycling route in Schoolboy Park nearing completion. Thanks

This is the street that I grew up on. We played tennis on the street as kids. The bus also went up this road. Not anymore. It’s displaced onto Griffith Ave and pedestrians/buggies/wheelchair users displaced too. What have we done with lovely Marino?

Interesting day in Islington as Deputy Lord Mayor. There to represent Cork City at the unveiling of a plaque to Michael Collins commemorating his initiation into the IRB in 1909. Vibrant British Irish community in Islington.
Delighted to welcome Peadar. GPs see 1st hand the effects of poverty on health. Climate change will impoverish us all if we don’t deal with it honestly.

Councillors Oliver Moran and Kieran McCarthy raised the issue of cycling at last night's council meeting. We need to show people that cycling is a beautiful way to move around Cork city. City council needs to lead the way on that.
Thanks to

for doing this piece on dereliction in Cork City. It is unacceptable that properties are allowed to become derelict. My ambition is to see an end to dereliction in Cork.

I wish I could say the same about Cork! Unfortunately we seem destined to take as long. When the city manager and all the Councillors have free parking at city hall it doesn’t bode well........
Great conversation about how we promote cycling in our city this morning. We've being saying for 30 years that Dublin could become a great cycling city. In the next ten years I think we could finally make it happen.
