@SwagnShades Great topic that doesn’t get talked about enough! I was used to 1.5-2 hr practices coming out of HS Getting to college & having 3 hour practices w/ a lift after was definitely a huge adjustment I wasn’t ready for I called my mom in tears after my 1st college practice… 😂

@Krypto_K0 @michael_schlact You can get college offers throwing 75+ sidearm/submarine. Submarine kid pitching at Rutgers last year was 82-84. Lots of programs out there looking for deception to add to their bullpens. Embrace what makes you unique! It’s always a good thing to be an outlier 👊🏼

I am all for being ‘data driven’. However, data without context is nowhere near as useful. This can lead to generalization, and ultimately a lack of specificity for the athlete. “This worked for Player X, so it will work for Player Y” isn’t the case. Everyone is unique

Every AB is personal. Man vs man. 1 on 1. If you got in a fistfight thinking, “man this guy is gonna clobber me” instead of thinking, “I’m gonna eff this guy up”, you’re gonna lose. Same thing with pitching. Be a savage, take it personal, believe in yourself & your stuff.

@TreadAthletics We had a reliever in college explain his mindset coming into the game. His exact words: “I want to murder the batter’s family” A bit extreme, and I don’t condone violence. But he’d come out of the pen throwing nothing but FBs & he’d blow guys doors off at 84-87… 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

Everyone in the baseball world is so obsessed with icing the arm Literally, I’ve asked kids what they do for arm care, and they tell me, “I ice after I throw”. Here’s an idea: Increase temp (heat), move through full ranges of motion, and promote blood flow. Ice isn’t arm care.

It was always easy for me to explain feels when I was coaching as a player, because I was doing it every day. As an old man, different story. When you don’t do something frequently, you lose that feel. Go throw. Take some hacks. Be a better coach & get back in the trenches.

For whatever reason, young dudes deal with this all the time. Especially top draft picks. Torkelson also gets a terrible strike zone to work with. Guess you gotta earn em… When prime Miggy took a pitch, it was a ball unless it was down the chute.

Relief Pitchers: You prob throw from the stretch 100% of the time. I understand why. However, don’t abandon the windup for training/catch play purposes. The windup does a phenomenal job promoting rhythm that your stretch may not create. Have fun with it. Don’t be a robot 🤝

Pitchers - try throwing barefoot (socks are ok)! Shoes provide stability. When we take that stability away, things become significantly more difficult! Weaknesses/imbalances will get exposed & you will be able to FEEL things in a completely new way. Try it! Start light & easy.

When we stop worrying about hits and start worrying more about QABs & putting good swings on the ball, things get a little easier. Young guys - watch the CWS. If you didn’t watch the Regionals/Super Regionals, make that a priority next year as well. Be a sponge. See what the best at the next level are doing, see where you stack up, pay attention to the strategy. Can learn so much from simply observing.

Watching these bullpen guys get extended for multiple innings, which isn’t their norm. For me, the hardest part about pitching multiple innings out of the pen was sitting down between innings. You get cold, lose your rhythm, etc, but don’t want to throw more & waste bullets…

Has anyone ever understood having a 1B throw to 3B on a GB in I/O? I understand you want the arm to get going. But when are you ever going to throw straight to 3B from 1B? If you want to have them receive a throw & pop off the bag, then throw to 3B it’s a lot more practical…

@PitchingCoachU @FlatgroundApp Amen!!! Step 1 is get ahead Step 2 is stay ahead (win the 1-1 pitch if you throw the 2nd pitch for a ball) Step 3 is don’t get cute & challenge the hitter. If we’re missing on purpose, we’re missing by 2-3 inches. Not 12. If you control the count, you control the hitter.

Everybody always tells hitters “be on time for the FB”. However, as pitchers, our job is to disrupt timing. If that dude is sitting in the box ‘dead red’, why would I throw him a fastball? FB usage in MLB is down 6% since 2015 while velo continues to rise. Why? 🧵

Nothing drives me crazier than hitters not mimicking “tracking” the ball when hitting off the tee Your head never stays in the same spot in a game - you have to practice moving your head/eyes. Maybe I’m just a pitcher that’s tripping. But IMO,its a small thing that plays big.

Baseball is the only sport in the world where the defense has the ball. This allows the pitcher to play offense if he chooses to. Be the aggressor, attack, and don’t take your foot off of the hitters throat. Flip the script.

An idea I’ve been toying with recently: Think of the pelvis (in the pitching delivery) the same way you think about your arm path Create loose, fluid motion early. Gather momentum. Then let that thing eat downhill Lots of drills that can lend to this feel. Try some new stuff!

It’s called “receiving” not “framing”. You “receive” the baseball when you catch it. There are pitches you may “frame” on the edges of the zone, but this is not the basis of catching the baseball behind the plate.

This should help improve command, movement, and feel all in one. Changing the visual focus of where we started our offspeed with 18u guys tonight magically fixed some problems. Don’t overthink it. Know where it needs to start, throw the mf hard, let the grip do the rest.

Simple off-speed tips: - Pick a specific visual focus. You know how much that pitch moves. Choose a target based off of that. (RHP SL should start at RHH hip/armpit) - Throw THROUGH your target, not to your target. FB arm speed, let the grip do the rest. Trust the grip, rip it.

@BenDonohue10 @Challenger_ST Unbelievable that he’s already up and moving like that. Rooting for him for sure!

As a kid, I struggled with overthinking regularly (baseball and outside of baseball). Performance anxiety got the best of me often, and I saw a picture of Granderson with “Don’t think, have fun” on his bill Great reminder for me to get back to having fun, and avoid thinking

Wanna know how I know I’m getting old? Working with a kid the other night and asked him if he knew who Clayton Kershaw was. He looked at me with the most lost eyes and admitted he didn’t know…
