Thread.
A gentle message for non-autistic parents and other family members.
Whether or not you believe that
#Autistic
people are like your loved one doesn't matter.
They were also children once, and can give much insight into your child's behaviour if you're willing to listen.
When an adult realises they're autistic and/or ADHD, they also have to process the fact that they are disabled - they've been disabled their WHOLE LIFE - and they have most likely never had *any* support or understanding.
They didn't even realise they needed any.
That's a *lot*.
Hey everyone, I have to share this with you.
My son just came up to me and said, 'I love you'. For the first time.
He's 15, non verbal and rarely speaks (unless it's to request food, lol).
This is...a big deal.
Have a great weekend. I will.
If an autistic person asks for clarification, they are not:
- being aggressive
- being rude
- being obtuse
- trying to annoy you
- whatever ableist slur you are throwing at them
They are :
- asking for clarification
It's not about you, don't take it personally, just explain.
Today I'm thinking of all the hyperlexic autistic bookworms who spent their childhoods being bullied for using their resulting wide vocabulary.
It turns out that you are, in fact, ChatGPT.
Sorry.
@CNET
"The app, [...], works by comparing a photo to a database of more than 3 billion pictures that Clearview says it's scraped off Facebook, Venmo, YouTube and other sites. It then serves up matches, along with links to the sites where those database photos originally appeared"

@Nito_Onna_Helen
@HiltonHotels
This is genuinely shocking Helen, I'm so sorry.
"I don't know where you were last night" - WHAAAT? Who does he think he is?
Actually sounds like a parent talking to a sulky teenager! Would this staff member have spoken to a male potential customer in this way,
@HiltonHotels
?
Not me getting blocked for saying yes, autism IS a disability
Even if some autistic people don't find it currently disabling, that doesn't change this fact
How are people still arguing about this?
@cptsdfoundation
@nleblanc12
Aspergers was REMOVED from the DSM in 2013. You're over a decade out of date.
The autistic spectrum doesn't have "ends".
Mild or severe are no longer considered adequate to describe autistic people.
Your obsolete definition of autism in the article completely invalidates the rest
Wondering how many of the people who don't meet the clinical threshold for an
#autism
or an
#ADHD
diagnosis are actually
#AuDHD
but are missed because the mix confuses everyone?
We *really* need an AuDHD diagnosis tool.
#Autistic
people, can I say something?
Parent here (I know, but hear me out).
I see you. Fighting. Speaking out. Trying to show parents like me a better way.
It may not feel like it but many of us *are* listening and know you're making things better for our kids.
Thank you.💞
Watching a parent of an autistic child boast about their child "opening their Christmas presents properly" is pretty depressing.
How is that an achievement?
@dieworkwear
I'm sure there is.
She's telling women to invest in properly fitting underwear, to wear a smoothing base layer, and to understand that wearing clothes with a smaller size tag than their bodies need is not flattering.
And she's being completely ignored.
This is SO important.
I have heard many people complain about how [autistic person] "doesn't understand 'No' or 'Stop'", and I have to ask, how many times have *you* sought consent, and if you did, accepted and honoured their refusal?
Autistic kids NEED to be able to say "stop." See
@AutisticNW
's consent primer: "If you want an autistic child to learn about boundaries, teach them about their own. If you want an autistic child to learn about respecting boundaries, respect theirs too."
So-called "impaired" autistic communication is more efficient than the nonautistic version which relies on ambiguous performative elements such as eye contact, intonation and body language that if misinterpreted can lead to misunderstanding and even conflict.
In this essay I will
OK just because I have at least one autistic family member, am so sensitive to sunlight I wear sunglasses even on cloudy days, play an invisible piano sometimes, am strict about using the right words to explain something, think literally occasionally, that doesn't mean I'M auti-
If you really think that learning to tie shoelaces is a higher priority for an
#autistic
person than, say, learning consent, respect and acceptance of self and others, I suggest that you don't understand as much about
#autism
as you think you do.
We non autistic people need to remember that autistic people we interact with have *by definition* a different communication style. We're responsible for accommodating these differences.
If we focus on the delivery rather than the content we're probably going to miss the point.
This video is absolutely amazing (although some of the replies are like "omg she swore! 😱).
We really do not talk or think enough about the infantilisation of disabled adults.
Presume Competence.
Autism is a disability but that doesn't mean it's a disaster. It can give a unique and original perspective but that can be very challenging.
Can we (by whom I mean mostly non autistic people) PLEASE stop classifying autism as either a tragedy or a superpower when it is neither?
I sometimes wonder how many "introverted autistic" types wouldn't be introverted at all if they hadn't been shamed, bullied or abused into masking when they showed their authentic selves?
The so-called social disability seems more like society's *inability* to accept difference.
Appalled to read of the murder of Dylan Freeman, and to read that there are people who want us to "walk in [the murderer's] shoes".
I am fully aware of the lack of support. But a child's disability should never make us ready to provide any kind of justification for killing them.
@commaficionado
And if anyone believes it's an exaggeration to be extremely concerned about autism screening, just bear in mind - this article was less than 30 years ago. ⬇️
#ActuallyAutistic
person:
- Is anxious
- Has meltdowns
- Suffers from depression
- Has unusual sensory and emotional reactions
- Has erratic sleep patterns
- Masks the above
- Can communicate using speech
,Professional’: Aha! You're so high functioning! You have mild
#autism
!
The reason I dislike functioning levels in
#autism
is NOT because I think all
#autistic
people are the same and need the same support.
I just believe that the labels severe/mild/high/low are simplistic to the point of being meaningless, given the diversity of autistic people.
Reminder that referring to an autistic person as *autistic* isn't "defining them by their autism"
It's simply an accurate description of their neurology
@DrMBotha
@DrRJChapman
@Theholisticpsyc
Thank you
@DrMBotha
-it's extraordinary how often people fail to realise just how dehumanising the superpower narrative is. Why can't neurodivergent people just get to have strengths and weaknesses like everyone else?
Exactly this. I've said it before and I'll say it again:
people make more of an effort to understand a dog's nonverbal communication than they will for an autistic person, and a dog gets the benefit of Presumed Competence long before an autistic person does.
‘Abortion hope’! Here’s how a national newspaper wrote about ‘gay genes’ in 1993. The article repulsed me so much I cut it out and have kept it to this date. It reminds me to be proud about who I am!

I feel like people telling autistic people they shouldn't get too concerned or picky about the specificities of language use are unaware of some key information about autistic people 😂
I've heard some people assert that
#Autism
isn't a
#disability
.
This is essentially saying
#autistic
people do not require :
- accommodations
- support
- any particular understanding of their needs
This is patently false.
There is no shame in being disabled.
#Neurodiversity
#AutismFYI
Everyone has a baseline anxiety level and for many
#autistic
people this is higher than for non autistic people.
We need to recognise the effect that more extreme sensory and emotional experiences which many autistic people have on these anxiety levels.
#mentalhealth
Wondering how much overlap there is between those saying "Greta Thunberg doesn't know what she's doing she is a child being manipulated by adults" and those saying "Shamima Begum knew exactly what she was doing when she went to Syria"...?

Just a reminder that not having a diagnosis of autism, or access to one, does not mean that a person is not autistic.
There are many autistic people out there who are unaware themselves that they are on the spectrum. Sir Anthony Hopkins didn't find out until he was past 70.
"The ability of people with autism to read what someone is feeling or thinking by looking at their eyes and face may have been underestimated, according to research conducted by a developmental psychology expert"
*Raises one eyebrow*
@drjameslaw
@Geraldine_Mumbe
@UKAMREnvoy
Disabled people already have to justify and plead with people in public just so they can sit down/use a straw/take a taxi/use a parking space. And it's even worse for invisible disabilities. This would just be another way of discriminating against them.
Not this AGAIN.
I get why people say this, but it's actually dehumanising.
Autistic people have strengths and weaknesses just as non autistic people do.
You shouldn't need to have a superpower to deserve acceptance, nor should you need to be a tragedy to get support.
#kayburley
@skynewsniall
A little disappointing that in your piece about the research seeking the "biological triggers" of
#autism
there was no mention of the implications of what happens if these triggers are found...
Clue:
There's a trending hashtag encouraging people to remove their face masks and say they're "exempt" if someone challenges them on it.
Not only are these frauds putting disabled people at risk with their irresponsibility, they're pretending to be disabled to escape the consequences.
This.
Any activity a person enjoys,whether they are autistic or not, can be good for their mental health. This doesn't mean it should be considered therapy. It just means it's FUN.
I wish so-called professionals would stop calling
#autism
an invisible disability. It feels like all they're doing is blaming
#autistic
people for masking (a survival mechanism) when what they actually mean is they don't have an up to date idea of what autism is or looks like.
Reminder: it's not
#autistic
people's fault (pro
#Neurodiversity
or not) that there's a shameful absence of services for autistic children and adults.
They're not the ones holding the purse strings, and getting angry at them is a welcome distraction for the real power holders.
Non
#autistic
people: You have to stand up for yourself when people are hurting you. Stop being a victim! Give as good as you get, it's the only language they understand.
Also non autistic people : What's this? CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR? Stop it now! Immediate intervention required!

@autismspeaks
My child is
#autistic
. It shapes everything about them and that's fine by me.
There is absolutely no chance of my forgetting they are a person and I find it bizarre that some people think there is that risk. There is no shame or stigma attached to the word, we use it proudly.
@Spectrum
@alisonsinger
@AutismScienceFd
This is completely absurd. How on earth does the word "profound" add anything to the understanding of an autistic person's disability?
How is it better than describing a person's support needs?
Good morning
Here's a reminder for you to keep in mind that just because a
#disability
isn't immediately obvious to you, that doesn't mean it isn't there and doesn't require understanding, support and accommodations.
Thanks
Have a good day 👍

Prof Ginny Russell, at the University of Exeter, said: “I do think it’s going to continue until maybe everyone is categorised as neurodiverse.”
Who's gonna tell her?
Just crossed the path of 2 small kids tramping through the woods near my home. They informed me that they were going on a Bear Hunt and were going to catch a big one. At my appropriately wide eyed gasp they reassured me they weren't scared so I wished them luck🥰
@MichaelRosenYes
@BBCr4today
@MishalHusain
"Neurodiverse children"?
"People who present with neurodiversity"??
Does she even know what these terms mean?
*pinches bridge of nose*
A diagnosis is absolutely not a "golden ticket". People's lives are not a Willy Wonka film.
It's not even a label.
It's a KEY to understanding.
Me aged 10: I will read anything. Shampoo bottles in several languages, the King James Bible, every Enid Blyton book ever written, Jackie magazine GIVE ME THE WORDS I NEED TO READ THEM ALL
Me today: 8 page instruction leaflet for an essential household appliance? Get in the bin
@EnvoyeSpecial
Oh no, I have just discovered the
#autismsucks
hashtag. Parents of
#autistic
children, please don't do this.
#Autism
isn't about you.
Your children deserve tolerance, understanding and love, not blame. Find a solution to what is hurting them and everyone's life will be better.
@mightbeautistic
I wouldn't call them 'special interests' because that's too obviously associated with autism IMO. Better to ask if a person is EXTREMELY knowledgeable or passionate about a specific subject (or more than one)
Just figured this out, allistic people apparently notice autistic people are somehow different within *the first second* of seeing us, and they don't like it or want to be around us:
Not a criticism of
#Dispatches
at all but I'm fed up with the lack of accountability.
How many of these documentaries need to be made for the people in power to actually take action on this appalling situation?
We have known about it for years, enough hand wringing, SORT IT OUT!
“My daughter was locked in a room for 551 days.”
WARNING: distressing themes.
@C4Dispatches
investigates why thousands of autistic people are being locked up in hospitals. We follow Dannielle who has been an inpatient for 13 years.
I can't decide whether the people talking about
#AssistedDying
on here who say that "the vulnerable will be protected" are hopelessly naive, woefully ill-informed, or just plain dishonest because:
WHAT makes you think we have a good track record in protecting vulnerable people?
@moomaze
@AutismTalkAspie
The problem is that without the identifier 'autistic', people will use other labels instead.
Aggressive.
Weirdo.
Naughty.
Oversensitive.
Strong-willed.
Aloof.
Know-all.
Withdrawn.
Those labels (and that's a non-exhaustive list, believe me) are much more damaging, I'm afraid.
Dear
#autistic
people: there are many parents of autistic children - even with high support needs - who value and respect your perspective.
Those who try to dismiss you are afraid of the truth you are telling. They do not speak for all. Please keep sharing your experience. ❤️
The article describes how Greta had an eating disorder that caused her to lose 10kg in 2 months, depression and was nearly mute.
Then goes on to tell us she had "high functioning
#autism
."
It's a joke, but it's not funny.
Literally, last week, a professional specialisimg in autism described an autistic person I know as "high functioning"
One month ago a psychiatrist described THE SAME PERSON as "autistic with moderate to severe learning disability"
Less than five weeks apart 🫠
#AskingAutistics
Does anyone get sudden extreme sleepiness (as in, you just want to take an immediate nap) when under stress?
Could this be a form of
#autistic
shutdown or 'freeze' meltdown or is there another potential reason I haven't thought of (eg vitamin deficiency)?
@Danwhite1972
Between this and the discussion around assisted dying ("safeguards!") it's a terrifying time.
There are 16 million disabled people in the UK and that's not including on disabled carers and allies.
We need to start organising so our voices can be heard because enough is enough.
please please be patient and gentle with
#autistic
children.
they're young, overwhelmed and don't know what they've done so wrong to make you angry with them
this tweet was brought to you by a rough day at work 🥺
The reason we no longer use functioning levels in
#autism
is NOT because all
#autistic
people are the same and need the same support.
It's because the labels severe/mild/high/low are simplistic to the point of being meaningless, given the diversity of autistic people.
Today's
#AutismFYI
:
An
#autistic
child who displays behaviour that is hard for you to manage is not "making bad choices" any more than a child with mobility issues is choosing not to climb stairs.
Excluding or punishing that child demonstrates a lack of understanding of
#autism
.
Rejection of the term "profound
#autism
" (or other specious labels for
#autistic
people) is NOT a denial of disability.
It's the exact opposite - a demand that specific needs must be recognised and supported.
We need to realise that artificial categories make professionals lazy.
Researchers: oh these ineffable, unfathomable autistic people! Such a puzzle! 🧩How can we ever understand why they do things?!

Here's the thing.
#Autistic
people desperately want and need specialist, high quality support.
If ABA was really helpful they would be the first to advocate for it.
Matt Hancock just said "we are not the kind of country that abandons our vulnerable or just locks them up"
Hey
@MattHancock
wait till you hear about what happens in

@JaneyGodley
As a Scot living in Berkshire, I'm delighted to have had the opportunity to learn about Louisa Jordan and her admirable work in the UK and abroad. I hadn't heard of her before but she sounds like someone Scotland can be proud of.
👍
Reminder that if ABA was really as helpful for
#autism
as its proponents say it is,
#autistic
people would be campaigning for it to be widely available.
They're clearly not doing this.
Ask yourself why that is, or even better, ask actually autistic people.
Was explaining neurodiversity to a parent recently, they found it really helped them to understand their child.
The best part though?
When they said, " So would that mean we should say 'autistic' instead of 'with autism', because it's part of [child]?'
I didn't need to say it.
Do the people writing these reports have any self awareness at all?
Lynn is discussed as though she isn't an adult human being who is perfectly entitled to refuse consent.
They're surprised she resists forced compliance with aggression when her clearly expressed wish is ignored.
Training an autistic adult to give up her iPad--before this she "never needed to engage in problem behavior" but during treatment "dangerous problem behavior... occurred " & "signs of aversion toward the treatment" "extinction bursts" etc ABA in 2023, free

How thoughtful of the staff to dispose of that feeling for you.
Just extraordinary of them to gang up on a vulnerable lone woman like that, and then send her onto the streets of London at 1am. They seem proud of their behaviour, are you,
@HiltonHotels

I appreciate you're overworked.
But, I say again, disabled children are doing their level best to get through the day in classes where there is almost no support, which is somehow their/their families' fault, very little empathy or understanding and a focus on what they do wrong

If your

* A linear spectrum
* Treatment or Cure
Then it's obsolete and needs updating.
