🎉 Very excited about this! 🎉
Finally testing out the code that will update CityStrides with new edits in OpenStreetMap!
🤔 This might be one of the biggest days in CityStrides history 😀

@StravaEng
@StravaSupport
I hope you're all safe & healthy!
Are you fielding API support requests at the developers email? Ticket 2950 (& follow up 2992) have gone unresponsive.
I'm unable to keep up with member activities. The CityStrides community needs your help!
A bittersweet glimpse into finishing a massive project
There are people who can't join in
It pains me that I can't fix this
Early on I had people who couldn't safely join in publicly
I could help with that by adding custom privacy
I can't fix racism
Woo!
My proof-of-concept script to automatically load one city’s street data completed successfully. I need to improve its performance before I run it globally, but it looks like it’ll work.
For the last six years I’ve kept a spreadsheet listing every parking spot I’ve used at the local supermarket in a bid to park in them all. This week I completed my Magnum Opus! A thread.
I was not emotionally prepared to see the top two 😳
They both have completed over TWELVE THOUSAND STREETS
One has activities in TWENTY COUNTRIES
🤯
I need to lie down
A 🎉brand new🎉 Route Builder tool is now available to supporters!
Draw out your route, seeing its distance as you build it.
Show/hide streets while building, to make sure you get them all.
View it while out to help you stay on course.

🎉 Step one of the brand new Garmin integration!
If you're a supporter, and you're piping your activities through another service just to get into CityStrides - put that service on pause & directly connect Garmin instead!
Lots of new people arriving today!
👋👋
The good news is that I’ve improved the automation around my server infrastructure so that this won’t break everything
😃🤓
The bad news is that activity syncing can be delayed & this isn’t displayed in the status page yet
😬😅
Nodevember!
All members are invited to this month’s global competition and collaboration. We all participate by completing as many streets as we can in the month of November. Our combined efforts, around the world, are showcased during the event.

Just released: Global Rank
🏆see where you stand, compared to everyone else in CityStrides ... shown on the logged-in homepage and everyone's profile page
I also included some back end changes that open the door to per-city ranking
Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
So. Many. New. People.
Please please please find the patience to wait for the activities to sync over ... it’s going to take a few days to get through these 10+ million jobs 😬
Would it be confusing to you if Node Hunter, only on city pages, limited the nodes it displayed to just that city?
- Node Hunter on a city page: only show unfinished nodes within view AND within city boundary
- Node Hunter on any other map: show unfinished nodes within view
Me deciding how I’m going to reply to people “complaining” (you all don’t actually COMPLAIN about this) about new streets being added from an OSM update
😫😓 It looks like I'm going to spend about $1.5k out of pocket this month for this global data coverage project. If you've been thinking about becoming a Supporter, it would be REALLY great if you did that this month. 😬
Wow, today was the biggest day of
@sidekiq
background jobs for the site - more than 22 million jobs were processed today!
Also just exceeded 7 billion total jobs.
You all run too much. 😄😂🤣
I've just released an update that addresses the issue of duplicate street counts. There's still some work to fully resolve the issue, and I could use your help. Check out the details here if you're interested in helping:
Woah!!!
Seven thousand people! That’s so wild: from me talking to friends about some “crazy” idea I had to 7,000 people all joining in and accomplishing WAY more than I ever intended.
I’m humbled every day by how much better everyone around me is. I love it. I hope I can keep up.
Psyched to be formalizing Nodevember this year
A global competition and collaboration to complete as many streets as possible in one month
...more details after I finish building this page 😅

It was a lot of fun to speak with Mitch Smith about all of your achievements. The photo shoot with Yehyun Kim was fantastic, though I do feel bad for the amount of (probably unexpected) running she had to do. 😄
Today's release includes clickable nodes in Node Hunter
I'm still looking into adding more info to the popup, but this seemed like it was useful enough to release now
Ooh, nice improvement on the way to Node Hunter: click the nodes to see info (street name, city name) and links (go to the street, city pages)
Is there any other information you would like to see when clicking/tapping on nodes in Node Hunter?
Just released a nice update to the Route Builder! 🚀
Now instead of having to click Every. Single. Little. Step. you can click anywhere and it'll automatically create a route to that point.
(you can switch back to straight-line mode if you need to, though)
I love it when people share photos from their run/walk in
#citystrides
(here & Instagram).
It’s a whole other aspect of exploration I hadn’t considered.
@rickeygates
@rvh95
Thanks for sharing!
I’ve got some route planning ideas in the works - I’m thinking “give me a route that connects {these streets}” kinda stuff…
I’ll need to talk with Striders to make sure I’m considering everything…
Just got an email that I’m extremely excited about!
I have to read through some documentation to be sure, but if it all works out there’s going to be a new way to log into CityStrides pretty soon...!!!
Today's update is a result of feedback in the forum. Thanks everyone!
- Private user progress is displayed in city user lists, so you have a better view of your standing
- The rankings skip in case of ties e.g. 1,1,1,4,5,5,7
Free shipping 🎉today🎉
There's a little "redeem" button in the checkout page. Click it and see shipping costs disappear just like your 100% completeness disappears when new streets are added to your city.😝
I love when I get emails asking for features that I already have a card for.
This time it was “teams”.
The idea is that a group of people can work together to complete the city as a team.
😄already imported the world (for the countries I know the details for)
😳that was too fast
😨something must be wrong
😖the only way to know is to sift through hundreds of thousands of cities
🤔gotta be a better way than that
I need your opinion:
I’ve got a grossly underused mailing list. I would like to be more active with that, but I don’t want to fill your inbox with stuff you don’t care about.
What kind of content would you like to see in a newsletter style email?
Lots of new stuff out there for you today!
Quick version:
- lots of new stats on the homepage & profile pages
- update to allowed streets from OSM
- performance improvements
Ugh. The site has exceeded Strava’s API limits, so _nothing_ related to Strava is functional right now. If you’re having trouble logging in or your activities aren’t showing up, this is why. All we can do is wait. 😧 😖
Updates for March 10
- Pin cities to the top of your running city list
- Your completed cities are moved into a new tab
- Search your running city list
- Fixes some display issues with the Time Filter
I'm working on a way to cache activity maps in the browser, which made me wonder how many activities people have...
😳
I was not prepared for this.
🤯
The leader has 10,099 activities, followed by many with 1k+
I saw this morning. There was a billing display bug & my costs aren't as high as I thought. It looks like $750 out of pocket this month. It's still a pile of money, but I don't want to be misleading/inaccurate.
Thank you to everyone who is contributing!
Whoops! A service that I use to help reduce bandwidth costs has gone down (and taken much of the internet with it) ... CityStrides will be back online after they are 😅
