Met someone at the Prerelease who started playing Magic 8 days ago because they’re a huge Assassin’s Creed fan. They loved the idea after cracking boosters and ended up Prereleasing and having a great time.
If you’re wondering why Universes Beyond exist.
Oklahoma ran out of ICU beds yesterday. Today, a bunch of Magic players are talking in local groups about trying to fire off big tournaments at stores tonight.
My grandma went into the ICU with Covid a few days ago.
I can’t imagine wanting to play against Tron this badly.
Friendly reminder to use non-gendered language when referring to unknown opponents online.
A few years ago, a woman reached out to me privately to ask if I could be more inclusive in my videos.
So I did. It wasn’t hard, and it made someone else’s day better. You can do it, too.
My grandma didn’t make it. Thank you everyone for the support, it means a lot. I can’t overstate how much kindness on the internet has helped me get through this year.

Hedge fund people probably having a conversation like, "We'll just wait them out, there's no way they're all willing to lose $300" not realizing that this is the same crowd who will spend $50 to hear a copypasta read out loud on Twitch.
First ever HOA meeting tonight, and we are voting on whether or not to replace dilapidated walking trails. Will cost each household a few hundred dollars over two years.
There’s a lot of boomers and they are NOT liking things.
“What if you don’t use a computer” has been asked
@kcfan19711
@4HandsBrewingCo
1. It’s not that dangerous, statistically.
2. No one asked them, they asked.
3. People like you run around thanking them at every opportunity.
Guy behind me in line at the store: “I have a wife and three daughters at home, so I’m in no hurry to get back.”
PLEASE let this stupid “joke” die with boomers. Most of us like our families, actually. I thought the guy was legit about to say something nice about his family wtf

previews are incredibly sweet. But the power creep continues unabated & it worries me. Unchecked power creep is one of the ways games die. It’s particularly tragic in Magic, where such a large part of the game is getting to enjoy 27 years of cards, not just the last 2.
Cool tidbit from yesterday’s
@fabtcg
panel:
Q: Will you ever release more than four standalone sets a year?
A: “No, players need time to enjoy the product.”
Car got broken into last night, so that’s not great. Fortunately, they clearly had no idea the value of Magic cards and left the cards alone that were in it.
I am firmly against locking Standard-legal cards behind anything other than a normal $4 booster pack. As proven several times, Wizards will inevitably print tournament staples in this space, intentionally or not. This makes Standard more complicated, more expensive and less fun.
“The accused Nazi and his friends were really nice to ME!!!” is the worst genre of tweet ever invented and somehow I’m still surprised to see it on my timeline.
Telling people to kill themselves over a video game is bad and my hot take is that you’re allowed to tell people it’s a shitty thing to do.
I don’t care if they feel dogpiled. I don’t care that you like them. That behavior needs to be driven out, full stop.
Seeing UNCONFIRMED rumors that Hidden Treasures are coming back for a future set. For those who don’t remember, WotC put recycled Reserved List cards (so already on the market) in first-run Zendikar boosters.
Would be a HUGE promotion if they ran it back with 2022 prices.
Now that Magic the Gathering isn’t just esports again, maybe
@wizards_magic
and
@MagicEsports
will remember that content creators besides twitch streamers exist and have been promoting your game for a long time and deserve better than what we’ve gotten over the last few years.
PSA: People providing coverage at events are independent contractors who work very hard. They don’t make high-level decisions, and directing hateful vitriol at them is everything the Magic community ISN’T supposed to be. You can voice concerns without making people feel like shit
If you weren’t playing back then, you should know this is not really how this worked in most places.
Stores only got a handful, most marked them up massively and/or only sold to insiders. It was a shitshow.
You weren’t walking into the bookstore and buying $30 Mox Diamonds.
2017: TCGplayer, CFB, SCG and WotC all running or creating successful, independent businesses and tournament circuits as events worldwide set attendance records.
2022: eBay
Not going to spoil the Top 8, but here's how the Top 8 decks broke down at

If you have Nazis on your team and people bring it to your attention and you don’t take any action until way later when it blows up on social media… and even then you only remove the Nazi from “leadership…” that’s a lot of trust you’ll never earn back from me.
Had to break the bad news to someone at the LGS that Farseek and Shocklands don’t work the way they wanted. Said they had been playing it wrong for years.
Player was thankful to learn the rule but it still felt like cancelling Christmas lol
I read the Hasbro Q1 earnings conference call so you didn't have to. Takeaways:
- Revenues are obviously up in Magic due to Arena, but tabletop revenues are up as well.
- In-Store Engagements with players are up double digits.
- Average player spends 8 hours a week on Arena.
So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly......
Magic players: “Even if it’s safe, it would be irresponsible to unban Jace without a reprint!”
Also Magic players: “They only unbanned Jace to sell packs!”
One habit I’ve worked hard to pick up in my Commander games: if your deck pops off and beats me, I’m going to be vocally happy for you. I’ve played thousands of EDH games - it’s not about winning. Just play Magic, have fun and remember it’s about The Gathering.
Another blow to the heart of Magic with today’s SCG decision. I cannot begin to express how ridiculously sad it makes me to see 25 years of Organized Play being dismantled in front of us. Can’t help but think off all the abuse we’ve taken on coverage. You got your wish.
Last tweet I’ll make on the subject now that Wizards released info: For people buying singles, Nexus of Fate is just another card. For people who want boxes, it’s added value or a discount on that box. For LGS, it’s a lifeline. For the habitual complainers, it’s a Thursday.
Moderators of Reddit/r/MagicTCG going to FreeMagic to defend banning creators and deleting submitted articles from Wizards of the Coast, while saying they don’t stifle discussion.
I don’t use Reddit often, but how embarrassing for the community.
At the risk of joining Discourse, I don’t like community members being put in the position to veto cards being designed, particularly main-set cards. Not everyone plays Magic the same way you do and I really, really dislike Standard being dictated by the Commander Rules Committee
Constant complaining isn’t a good brand. The direction MTG is going has been pretty clear for a while now - you either get on board or you make yourself miserable complaining about everything all the time.
Personally, I love pushing the boundaries of what the game can be. LETSGO
I have the solution to the MtG counterfeits (counterfeits, not proxies) problem: make each Magic card cheap enough that it's not worth the hassle to make counterfeits of it. Boom, solved!
Hot take: Magic is actually pretty great right now.
Designs have been amazing to a level I didn’t think possible 30 years in. Drafts have been A+.
Balance issues have been much better.
MTG Organized Play will soon be in a good spot (and
@HueyJensen
is great).
I’m excited.
Just to be clear, not paying your judges is not an option. It’s just not, and if you can’t pay your judges you shouldn’t ever host another event. There are no extenuating circumstances that make that OK. Asking people to buy playmats isn’t going to stop you from getting sued.
Wondering why Tron was so successful at
#PTLOTR
?
The answer is in the build and the team - Team Handshake has been the best squad on the PT for the past two years.
Their Tron build had a 70+% winrate.
Everyone else's was sub-50%.
The list of cards legal in Pioneer that are banned elsewhere:
Smuggler's Copter
Dig Through Time
Treasure Cruise
Deathrite Shaman
Aetherworks Marvel
Reflector Mage
Attune with Aether
Rogue Refiner
Ramunap Ruins
Rampaging Ferocidon
Field of the Dead
Felidar Guardian
Emrakul
9 of the 15 most-played creatures in Modern were printed in Modern Horizons 2. The only two in the Top 10 that weren't printed in the past year are Stoneforge and Snapcaster.
Not a fan of that level of power creep, at all.
Asking for retweets on this one.
Dustin Roberson is an incredible human and MTG player whose story I helped to share. He also has degenerative muscular dystrophy, & as the disease progresses he's increasingly unable to use his computer.
We can fix that.
If you think the diverse field, reasonable conversion stats and great Top 8 of
#PTRIX
is a sign that something needs to be banned in Modern, then maybe the format just isn’t for you. Because this was an awesome tournament.
Recently we learned that the Pro Tour photographer of the last 21 years,
@Photobycraig
, won't be at the Mythic Championship. Magic wouldn't be the same if not for Craig's amazing work, and today I did my best to honor an incredible photographer and person.
Fired this off while waiting for takeoff. If you want to be a bigot in any of my groups or the
@BrainstormBrew
discord, I’ll gladly remove you the fuck out of my communities.
Remember that time ya’ll cheered activist investors trying to spin off WotC because they claimed it wasn’t profitable enough, just because one of them was named Jon Finkel?
Anyway, $250 booster packs.
I’ve been telling players for the last few year that I’ve been seeing rulings that shock me as a competitive player. But this one made my jaw hit the floor.
Wizards of the coast making a tournament series where 1st place gets $50,000+ and 2nd place gets nothing, and then cracking down hard on people doing splits is so fucked.
This is life changing money. Expecting people to do nothing and put it all on one match is insane.
