@RMTunion A few days ago I saw a guard guide a visually impaired passenger off his train and to the stairs, not leaving her side until he was sure she was OK. Imagine what would happen if there was no onboard or station staff.

A retired driver who posts pics of rail staff from the 1970s, says he has had a DM from a H&S rep at a rail company, asking him not to post pics of drivers line side (relieving a train on the man line etc) as it undermines today's safety culture.

It's Just been said on Radio 4 that a Which report has shown Trainline to be better value than station ticket machines. Why not throw ticket office staff into the mix? Trainline would have been trounced.

Ultimately,as with most things, it's about having the right mindset and can do attitude,rather than thinking of a million reasons why something can't be done.

Uploaded a pic of East Coast driver James Woolfe,with the final train he will drive before retirement.James was also at the controls of 91031 in 1995,when it reached 154mph. Next month will be 45 years since he became a driver. @RAIL @TodaysRailways @LNER

@Northern_Travel CrossCountry is in the middle of a trial to 'nudge' passengers off its trains and onto other TOCs. The XC press office doesn't like talking about it though – it's not a good look. If it's deemed a success it will no doubt be rolled out across its network.

Hard to imagine anyone with a full time job outside politics becoming an MP now.Instead,we have people self isolated from those they are elected to represent.We all suffer because of it.

On Radio 4 it has just said that UK farmers are dismayed at the news that Morrisons is to launch a trial to import lamb from New Zealand. Supermarket says British lamb is too expensive. How on earth can it be cheaper to import from half way around the world?

@bakerloormt @RMTLondon @RMTunion Having spoken candidly with train cleaners - they can't speak publicly because of draconian social media policy from HR - they have to deal with some awful things from the public. Body fluids (all kinds!) dirty knickers and worse are just everyday occurrences!

A BR long service certificate from 1971 has been found in a jigsaw from a Lockerbie charity shop and a call has gone out to try and trace the relatives of the person named. It's Railman William Barnfather (of Carlisle) and it thanks him for 53 years of service. @RailwayMagazine

The Euston stampede is a infamous occurrence – something that rail journalists (myself included) have complained about for a long time.

Just heard that Tom Joyner has left @CrossCountryUK with Immediate effect. HR director Zoe Kennedy said “It has been agreed with Tom Joyner that he will stand down as MD with immediate effect” adding that Joyner will “pursue other opportunities” @RAIL @TodaysRailways

@RAIL @FrancyneJohnson I've been in signal boxes when emergencies have kicked off and the last thing anybody thinks about is profit before safety. Pass on the ground will often have no perception of just how hard it is to deal with an evolving situation and of all the effort being made to deal with it.

I've just been to a small village where the church is constantly open - even when unattended by staff - parcels are left on doorsteps without fear that someone will steal them and there's a nice pub serving a wide range of food. To top it off, it is within sight of a railway.

@kynohy @ClarkeMicah @afneil Final coal train to a UK coal fired power station, runs at end of month. Power station closes in September and will no doubt be blown up. Germany recently reactivated its CFPS to 'keep the lights on', maybe we could learn a thing or two from them.

From @svrofficialsite Over 6,500 enthusiasts attended gala. Figures boosted by hundreds of shareholders travelling on passes/complimentary tickets. This was the highest number of visitors the SVR has recorded for a diesel event. Attendance exceeded the expected numbers, by 44%.

@militaryhistori World Service saying that Germany and Italy are considering keeping coal power stations open longer than anticipated/reactivating closed coal power stations - as measures to avoid Russia holding them to ransom.Also talk of drilling for gas, regardless of environmental damage.

@ClarkeMicah We currently have a major rail freight company that has switched to diesel traction because the cost of electricity has made operating its electric fleet of locomotives too expensive. Ironically, many of the routes they use are electrified!

I had a sneak look a few days ago at the 2023 event calendar for a certain heritage line. I asked why there are far more family events than enthusiast ones. Apparently, the cafes do better (was told enthusiasts tend to bring own food) and the book sales do better too!

Class 90s for sale. @ClarkeMicah This is because the freight operator can't afford the electricity bill. It told me that operating diesel trains costs 50% less than electric. If Gov was serious about green issues, it would step in and help.

The first phase of a rail decarbonisation scheme to electrify the Fife route has been granted approval to move to the construction stage. This initial phase will commence with electrification of the section between Haymarket and Dalmeny.

@SimonCalder When PR goes wrong! People need to realise that LNER is being used as a human shield by the Government - getting it to take the flak from passengers, while the Gov keeps its hands clean. All rather cowardly.

@TrinovantesD @Ian_Willoughby While researching about him and Kindertransport for a book, I discovered that he became frustrated with certain countries who refused outright to take Jewish children. He said at least 2000 more could have been saved if they had had done.
