@ZareerMasani No, why should it be? Unlike other degrees, the basic criterion for a doctorate, whether at Oxford or a "back street poly" remains consistent: an original contribution to knowledge. I see no reason why such at Oxford works be inherently better.

When supervising MA students at Ghent, I always warned them that they should not do a dissertation in Ancient History if they could not read German. Otherwise they'd be at risk of missing out vast chunks of literature, and might end up reinventing the wheel.

We have a huge pile of cast-off sherds at the base of our site (the pottery dump). Our volunteers take some as souvenirs. Tourists take some, too. They're free and we have them by the ton. Boslough's comment is just a mean (and stupid) thing to say.

@mualphaxi Homer wasn't always ancient, and his characters are often petty, mean spirited, violent and unpleasant. I think the idea of heroism in Homer is quite far from most modern views of heroism. But I get the feeling you haven't actually read Homer, just enough to rant on here badly.

Stuff like this is irresponsible - that's a big claim, which - for Greece at least - requires a lot of thought and evaluation of evidence. Throwing it out in a single sentence to a mass audience in an interview which jumps all over the place is really bad form.
