Back in October, when I first started following Bisan, I spent an afternoon scrolling back through all of her old posts. Silly photos with her friends. Graduation. Traveling. Mirror selfies. She had a full face, her hair was thick, her smile was genuine. I am so fucking haunted.
I join
@caesarah_
and a growing # of staff in my decision to resign as associate editor at Frontier due to their deliberate silence on the Palestinian genocide.
I thank Sarah in particular for her awe-inspiring courage + unflagging commitment to her values.

*indie lit mag voice* we want your teeth. we want your marrow. your saliva. your follicles. your nose hairs. you nose-hair mucus. your enzymes. your eye-crusties. the weird skin you pull off your lips––
did people miss the part of the tweet where op is clearly making fun of the grocery guy’s perceived incompetence and getting replies to join in and talk about how stupid/annoying gig workers are when they make mistakes…. bc that’s not an “accessibility” convo that’s being a dick

As Jews, we are called to set aside all other commandments - including the one to observe Shabbat - for the preservation of life. This is pikuach nefesh in action.
NOW: Hundreds of Jewish Americans being arrested at Grand Central Station in what might be the biggest mass civil disobedience that NYC has seen in two decades.
@AmandaLeduc
Many people think the answer to "how do i improve my writing?" is "write more." 9/10 times, the answer is actually "read more," and "read more widely".
We don’t talk enough about how many disabled people have to fawn over those who take care of them in order to get their basic needs met. If the caregiver isn’t in a good mood, they have to please them before asking for things so they don’t get yelled at or worse. It’s exhausting.
maybe demeaning, surveilling, mocking, and putting on social media blast ppl who are stuck in shitty jobs already is not the move, and also in no way conducive to a disability justice politic. jesus
starting 2023 off right with a a new peer reviewed paper! about covid cripistemologies, why functioning labels are eugenics, why cringe culture is ableist, and how to do compassion in crisis :3
trans disabled math is trying to balance how often you ask for disability accommodations with how many times you ask to be gendered correctly. bc if you go "too far" with either, both will be mocked + ignored for you + all other trans disabled people in that space, forever.
Disabled math is figuring out how much to drink in case you are out and need to pee knowing how inaccessible and gross most bathrooms are and deciding to go dehydrated because of it
@reclaimingtrans
the fact that they are literally exploiting someone's fresh post-op chest pic in order to make their bullshit point. who, again, is objectifying bodies here???
i'm so so so excited (SO EXCITED) to announce that i've just accepted an NES writing residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland for February and March of 2024!!!!
Like, I'm going to be HERE!!!
the anti-trans "parents' rights" movement is inextricably linked to the eugenic ableism of "autism parents" + advocates of antivax, aba conversion abuse, and forced institutionalization of gender/bodymind-noncompliant children!
lately I've seen stories about how anti-trans activism is increasingly cloaking itself as "parental rights." it's also crucial to note the many parallels between this movement & the anti-vaxx parent movement (especially spreading medical disinformation):
at long last! the coveted screenshot!!
i have been sitting on this news for months, but yes - my first full-length poetry collection is under contract with
@northwesternup
/ Curbstone Books.
Huge shoutout to
@marisasaystweet
for the warm support and enthusiasm!!!!

@karriehiggins
Up on a rickety 8 foot ladder stocking shelves, despite telling management I did not feel comfortable.
Dude yells “haha hey!” Shakes the ladder, I scream as I almost fall onto the pile of hard objects on the ground.
Guy laughs. I (18) am required to keep stocking.
@Rrrrnessa
one time I asked my grandfather, who is fully Roma and a half-step/lots of luck removed from the Holocaust, how people could possibly deny it. he said the point wasn't to convince people it didn't happen, but to invite it to happen again.
I think about that constantly.
had my book launch last night at Unnameable Books in turners falls MA, with beloved friends both old and new. in a few days I embark on my next trip to sell more books + share more words, but for now, i'm just basking. thank you :)
btw, order now:
we should have learned by now that repeating fascist jokes/memes 'ironically' only appears to defang them and actually furthers their reach + ingrains them into the cultural consciousness
why are people reblogging jokes about the pet eating nonsense as if conjuring fake 'barbaric' cultural practices doesn't get people killed. especially Black people
@sadqueer4life
the best push against "socialization" theory i ever read was "we weren't socialized fe/male, we were socialized under patriarchy." i think for people who fail/are failed by gender, that patriarchal socialization takes the dehumanizing form you (and me and lots of others) felt
@caesarah_
the way they shut down the name reading of murdered infants+ young children. pushing us into lines & corners+ targeting BIPOC. the excuse: 'accessibility.' as a disabled person, the citation of disability, esp. given the mass disablement of palestinians, is a particular disgrace.
@uncanny_eli
fully hear & agree w/ this, and equally extremely uncomfortable w the rise of "theyfab" among other trans people, too. identifying the violence tme people can perpetuate while still being marginalized doesn't have to mean delegitimizing or mocking their/our transness
contract signed + submittable invite accepted, it's official: I'm now associate editor with
@FrontierPoetry
. i can't wait to work with
@megpieinflight
and the rest of the team at a publication I've admired since i was a fresh, unpublished poet back in 2016.
@semispeaking
time to program a response like "i just think it's so cute how you use your voice to talk! thanks for reminding me to be grateful for all that i have :-)"
We'll be publishing FAILURE TO COMPLY by
@CavarSarah
in 2024!
Cavar is a genreless writer, editor, and cultural studies PhD student & their book is an abolitionist text concerned with trans, disabled, and Mad liberation as a speculative art. So it's a perfect fit for us. 🤗
why are people reblogging jokes about the pet eating nonsense as if conjuring fake 'barbaric' cultural practices doesn't get people killed. especially Black people
@SnoringDoggo
while i hate that this is the case, and that trans disabled ppl are forced to settle for so little, i'm glad that this first instance is on a kids' show in order to normalize / celebrate trans disabled life starting early. still, big sigh.
Today I am 24. I have osteoporosis, and broke my pelvis in summer 2021. In the wake of that injury, I wrote an essay on crip/Mad vulnerability, care, & healing. Thank you
@NatBrut
for publishing this very tender work.

ANNOUNCEMENT!
VERY excited to announce I'll be publishing my surrealist-feminist-gothic-body-horror mini-chapbook, "A Hole Walked In," with the inimitable
@swordandkettle
. This'll be my chapbook debut, and I'm so honored to be working with some really awesome people! ❤️💓💕💛
@sadqueer4life
growing up i was a cis girl, but i felt like an ungirl, a badgirl, an anti/antegirl; so much was wrapped up in body image and neurotype as well. i was socialized under the same patriarchal system as everybody else but it produced not a girl but a sub-par approximation
Beyond excited to announce that FAILURE TO COMPLY, my debut novel, is now available for pre-order at
@featherproof
! It drops Aug. 6, 2024.

this suicide prevention month, don’t “check in” on friends who concern you. invite them to make an emergency plan together. ensure those around you have enough social and material support to survive.
and for the love of fuck, find a response to crisis that ISN’T the psych ward.
following Palestinian writers + others w/ integrity (and courageous former editors like
@huaxixyz
and
@_sarah_ahmad_
) , I have withdrawn my work from
@GuernicaMag
following the outrageous, despicable settler apologia they recently chose to publish.
@caesarah_
the way they shut down the name reading of murdered infants+ young children. pushing us into lines & corners+ targeting BIPOC. the excuse: 'accessibility.' as a disabled person, the citation of disability, esp. given the mass disablement of palestinians, is a particular disgrace.
with all the elegies to SPD, i was surprised not to see a peep about the labor+financial abuse there. like, respectfully, i thought we had started boycotting them years ago?
@SFdirewolf
admin want to turn us against each other. it isn't an abled/sane student's fault that i am denied accomms. many 'abled' students are also disabled, but denied medical recognition. so much gymnastics to avoid the fact tht the neoliberal university is unsustainable for all of us
@communoah
honestly the idea that a trans person being mistaken for their ASAB is "passing" baffles me, bc like....that's not passing, that's erasure. like when i think of trans passing i'm thinking about someone being their gender but concealing their transness
okay, so between now and March 1 I have not one but two chapbooks coming out –– A HOLE WALKED IN, a body horror/spec fic with
@swordandkettle
, and THE DREAM JOURNALS, a hybrid micromemoir with
@giallolit
. Both have goodreads pages as of now –– please share and add them below!
@laurenancona
ableists: autistics don't understand body language and that's why they are Inferior
also ableists: verbal communication Is communication and without it you lose personhood
it's all a long con to justify our elimination from society. every damn time.
wow wow wow listening to
@demonicground
discuss the disproportionate funding of antiracist research that reinforces "Black bodies" as dead, dying, objects of total oppression –– asking cultural studies broadly, "how do we theorize violence without replicating it?"
i was invited to announce my acceptance on social media and like....don't mind if i do!!!
my genrefucked Mad sf cyborg story will be out in
@xraylitmag
later this year!!! 🎉
constantly seeing this ridiculous discourse about disability and capitalism on here like....yes my bodymind would still work funny under communism. yes i still want to live in a world in which bodymind transgression isn't punished with death by exposure and starvation
my debut novel is out Aug 6

nonspeaking people are not "silent." they are /silenced/ under violent, hostile conditions. the answer is not to "give them voice" but to remove the carceral muzzle of ableist eliminationism.
honestly plenty of ppl who "detransition" (cease binding, hormones, etc.) are still trans. they just don't feel like doing xyz anymore. or their identities change. it's not a matter of reneging or moving backwards (fuck trans teleology). it's just a reconfigured relationship.
@talilalewis
YES!!! & other Mad non-addicts need to hear this: addicts/people who use drugs are our comrades. we share struggles & spaces. stigmatizing substance use further stigmatizes Madness, and vice versa.
the thing about "womxn" is that it evades the specificity it's supposed to serve. are we talking about ppl somehow perceived as vaguely "feminine"? are we talking about the dreaded category of "Women And Nonbinaries"™? are we talking about ppl who experience misogyny?
a couple days ago, I received an exciting email from
@sophiatempest
. I'm pleased to announce that
@giallolit
has accepted my chapbook, The Dream Journals, for publication. I can't believe this year has taken me from 0 accepted chapbooks to 2 💕❤️
i implore everyone to look @ mastheads of mag before submitting. look at the faces, but also where they've published, what they write about, etc.
reading teams are notoriously white &middle class (who else has time to read for free?) some mags resist that. most pull a pshares.
"top 20 books you may have missed in 2021!"
*proceeds to list books that have received critical acclaim from major publications, released from big 4 + their subsidiaries, from established authors with prestige publications*
@epistemophagy
the wonderful lesbian therapist who wrote everyone's surgery letters back in college was what i determined was "lowercase c-ci s". the kind of cis that understands that gender is a set of ritualistically violent practice that needs to be resisted at every opportunity, but [1/2]

oh oh oh oh oh!!!! i cannot even describe how excited i am for this chap. my heart and soulbaby. my supertender viscera. i can't believe you will be reading my guts!
@Mifield
@JortsTheCat
The flippancy and rudeness of OP's attitude toward the delivery worker. I sincerely doubt a post along the lines of "I don't know what's taking this guy so long but I'm getting stressed and hungry" would get the same response.
Isaura
@isaurarenwrites
consistently goes above & beyond to publicize instances of harassment, risking their health and safety in doing so. They've really transformed (inaugurated) our convos about harassment + mags, and I'm amazed –– & infuriated at the need for –– their work.
Disappointed that lit mags are taking advantage of people in this way. Out work is so precious, and my heart goes out to all the authors who are having to withdraw and wrangle work from presses that have mishandled and mistreated it.
also..! thrilled to announce that my 3rd chapbook (and longest-in-the-making!), OUT OF MIND & INTO BODY, will be out in 2022 with
@the_ethelzine
!! ethel does gorgeous, handmade chaps and mini-books, and i can't imagine a better home for this v intimate textual archive i've made.
@_cassiopeiamoon
@yrfatfriend
meanwhile these people will boil their "fresh" vegetables until they're grey, tasteless, and, yes, basically devoid of nutrients!
@chipilonita
the idea that some trans people are universally legible as 'binary' implies that cis people respect our collective right to self-determination...like ppl who say this have to willfully, constantly ignore the persistent "they"ing of transfems who use she/her exclusively
@communoah
I agree w you but also think that the sentiment of “you claim to be radical/counterculture but can’t handle the weird looks you get in a kn95” is still veeeeeery applicable to a ton of people
@storiedcassette
in institutional settings (and in general but esp institutional): if someone misgenders/deadnames a client, stop the conversation. halt the conversation until they gender said client correctly. don't just mumble "[correct pronoun]" but actually be annoying and disruptive about it
everyone's arguing abt pronouns again and i just. PLEASE give everyone the built-in OPPORTUNITY to say their pronouns / preferred name if it's diff from the roster. there is little more awkward than being the 1 Trans Person to give their they/them pronouns on the 1st day of class
Students sit in a circle in front of their tents around pre-packed food, each with a haggadah. Many wear kuffiyehs around their necks and heads, most are masked. One holds the seder plate above a handmade sign reading "Pesach means solidarity and liberation."
#AltTextPalestine
Explaining the seder plate at the Columbia encampment. These students truly embody the meaning of Passover in their provisional seder and their commitment to liberation.
Lastly, if anyone has leads on paid editorial positions, please be in touch. I'm in a semi-precarious financial position right now and would appreciate leads on new work to supplement my lowered income.
hi :)
I’ve been out to my parents for 10 years; in my everyday life for 8. I fucking love being trans & am honored to make this choice every single day.
@laurenancona
iirc it has roots in 4 chan shit/used as an insult in a similar way to the r word. i know some autistic people reclaim it, but it definitely makes me hesitate when i see someone identify themself as an autist (no judgement to autistic ppl who do, that's just my reaction)
Got my first book review acceptance of the year! My review of
@CavarSarah
's forthcoming novel Failure to Comply will be published in
@harbor_review
. Can't wait for people to learn about this book!
banning books in prisons is a direct continuation of the logics of slavery & the banning of slave literacy. the latest banned books list is particularly horrifying.
If you're learning about prison book access, know that dozens of groups nationwide do amazing work to send free, used books to prisoners. Collectively, prison book programs send approximately 200,000 free books every year (whoa!).
Donate $$$! Volunteer!
i'm writing abt this in sff & medical abuse this quarter, but like...children desperately need to be exposed to painful and ~upsetting~ books.
do you realize how much worse it is to endure horrible things without the words to describe them?
@literElly
i haven't seen enough people attaching mask ban shit to bans on religious head coverings like hijab, either. this is drawing on a long tradition of using demands for transparency + surveillance against multiply marginalized ppl
