I can’t stop thinking about how the divorce rate for men leaving their really sick wives is so high that nurses are taught to warn women patients when they get diagnosed with a serious illness
As someone who does this quite often, they are not ignoring you. They are overwhelmed. They are forgetful. They are trying to figure out what it means to care for themselves and actually do it. They do not hate you. They, in fact, probably miss you.
very uncomfortable and frustrating to hear people, in person, at work, on tv, etc, talk about the pandemic in the past tense....just yesterday alone, 12 thousand people died from covid.
Exciting news!

Everyone I explain long COVID to & call it a mass disabling event thinks I’m feeding into conspiracy theories because, they say, “if that’s was true, the government would be panicking.” Have you not paid attention to anything in American history ever
Just got a cold email from a tenured professor telling me she assigns my essay in her classes.
Please put junior, grad student, adjunct, & non-academic scholars’ work on your syllabus — AND TELL THEM. It made my entire day.
Academia is cool because you can give a talk at Ivy League schools and then go home to eat an uncrustable for dinner because you can’t pay $20 for takeout
If you begin talking about the coronavirus by saying “it’s only really fatal for the elderly and chronically ill people” then stop.
Try “The elderly and chronically ill people are the most vulnerable to its effects.”
How you say things matters, it really matters.
Academics:
Has any non-academic ever grossly OVERESTIMATED what your salary?
Someone thinks I'm "making bank" because I teach at a big university...I'm a grad student TA....ha
I'm interested in why people think academics are rolling in cash. Academic poverty is very real.
I repeat: the point of a strike is to disrupt the rhythms of daily life. It is to show to utterly dependent we are on the labor of the underrepresented and mistreated. A few bad days for rest us is worth supporting the long term quality of life for thousands of striking workers
The new
@Netflix
show "In The Dark" is about a young blind woman who's also a partier and gets caught up in a murder case. Netflix DOES NOT offer audio descriptions for the show. A show about the blind inaccessible to the blind.
The GameStop story scares Wall Street because people will realize that the stock market isn’t just for the very rich and educated. It’s actually pretty simple to use with some basic research. Creating financial illiteracy is a yet another class gatekeeping tactic
It’s actually a pretty big privilege to just leave this app. For some people, this is the one place where they can be themselves and feel a sense of community
The way people get mad and annoyed when you mentioned that there is still a pandemic is such a strong indicator of the type of aggression and shame that upholds normalcy and ableism
People saying Britney Spears doesn’t need a conservatorship because she’s mentally stable...no, the conservatorship is abusive no matter her mental health/mental illness status.
Guy Fieri has raised $21.5 million for unemployed restaurant workers, which means Guy Fieri has done more for unemployed restaurant workers than Congress has in the last 8 months.
Temperatures are literally hotter than a human can survive right now, affecting marginalized ppl the most. Understated is how climate change is causing more ppl to develop disabilities/ worsen existing conditions. All while care systems are increasingly crumbling & privatizing
Disabled person: yeah I just got this new [accessibility device goes here]
Nondisabled people: OMG IM SO SORRY *touches your new access device*
Disabled person: OMG IM SO HAPPY FOR YOU? DO YOU LOVE IT? DOES IT WORK WELL? CELEBRATE!!
TERFs use the pretense of wanting to “protect ciswomen” to hide their deeper belief that the category of woman should only include those upholding western, white normative femininity in manner, form, and aesthetics. It’s a fascist project that serves empire to its core
No more cover letters, CVs, or teaching statements. Academic job committees are getting my birthchart, fav possum memes, cat photos, headshots, my top viral tweets, a coupon to the Cheesecake Factory, and some loose pieces of candy corn.
How do you say to someone “you’re talking so loud it physically hurts me” without them taking it as a personal attack? Sensory access is so misunderstood.
My hot take for Disability Pride Month is that it’s okay if you don’t have disability pride. Developing or getting a disability can be the result of trauma and systemic violence. “Pride” isn’t to be forced upon or expected of any disabled person.
People to stop using “highly productive” and “strong work ethic” as compliments. It just validates people who have been manipulated into sacrificing their health & social life for work.
My sister’s school district isn’t requiring masks so I’m currently writing an extensive, 8 paragraph essay directly to the mayor and every school board member. I was made to ruin lives through my writing.
The "don't listen to sad music" generic mental health advice so deeply misunderstands that a primary comfort of sad music is that it gives you a medium to understand your emotions & not feel alone with those emotions
People are shocked when I tell them my high risk friends are planning to quarantine until early 2022. As if this is an overreaction or “oh poor them.” I’m done trying to convince people we’re living in a pandemic.
Is there a term to describe health bragging? Like when nondisabled people go out of their way to flaunt how “healthy” they are as a way to show superiority? Not ableism but something more specific
One of the scarier parts of this never ending pandemic is who keeps revealing people to be. Not politicians or doctors, not your boss, but your friends, cousins, partners, etc. Everyone you spent a lifetime thinking they’d never hurt anyone.
Please support Alice Wong’s recovery, home care, and ICU bills. Alice is truly the best of us in the disability community and she deserves all our care
An email template I’ve been using for meetings that could be emails:
Due to accessibility reasons, I have limited capacity for video conferencing. I am requesting that you accommodate my physical and mental needs by instead conducting this conversation over email.
I’ve now gotten confirmed reports from multiple cities that seagulls have been attacking and sometimes even knocking news and police drones out of the sky at the protests. I hope this makes you smile.
My job is to teach, however, oh and also did I mention that an academic's job is often literally to produce new knowledge?
Hey, sorry if I'm "worthless" to society, I am just over here developing a model of thought to explain this garbage fire of social and political life.
Growing up, I say things like: "we should house the homeless" or "water should be free." And adults would say "haha you'll think otherwise when you're older. Then you'll get it!"
I am 27 and thank fuck I do not get it.
Unless you believe in all disabled people’s rights to access, self determination, consent, and other rights that affirm their humanization and agency, do not enter a profession where you’ll be working primarily with disabled people
It is absolutely socially and psychically alienating to have consciousness that the pandemic is arguably at its worst, and then go out in public to see the world just proceeding 'as normal'
Today in “I Can’t Believe We’re Still Doing This Shit:” Someone (non-disabled) who knows me well said it was insulting to other disabled people to call myself disabled.
Disabled folk, sorry for insulting you all with my mere 4 chronic conditions....
Tonight, a former student told me she's been accepted into SIX top medical schools in the U.S.
She is a first-generation college student, disabled, and has specifically stated that she wants to be an "anti-ableist primary care doctor"
Give me this future.
When I explained that I'm literally paid at the poverty line, this same person followed up with "well how can you afford to travel so much?"
Uuuuh mind your business and I have 2 other jobs and a majority of my travel is for work. Also, MIND YOUR BUSINESS.
Language structures reality, including imaginations, ideas of the future, identities, actions, and more. It contours the bounds of what is possible and thinkable.
The language we collectively use to discuss covid, as everything else, can have material effects on other people
I am once again reminding neurotypical people, if I ask you to be quieter, it’s not a personal attack or attempt to shut down your personal expression. It’s because my ears are so sensitive that simply hearing a doorbell at the wrong time can make cry. Thank you.
Is there a list of disabled owned stores (including Etsy) and businesses? If not, can we start one? Share your favorite shops and self promote please :)

For so long, I thought I had to act professional (in a dry, conservative sense) on social media for my career. So, seeing junior, TT, and tentured professors be absolute weirdos & badasses on social media really comforts my strange self.
On disability community day of mourning, I especially mourn those who have no one to remember them, those forgotten or left for dead in institutions, prisons, ‘care’ facilities, civilian spaces turned into war zones, shelters, streets, and alone in their homes.
