Recent storms have filled many potholes to the brim! Would you be surprised to know that there are organisms who call this water home? Tiny triops, tardigrades, and fairy shrimp are among the various lifeforms that can be found flourishing in potholes. Now that's pretty magical!

It's not just humans that console each other. A recent study showed ravens who were given a treat consoled their friend who was denied that same treat. White it may be a stretch to call this empathy, we are able to see that ravens have emotional intelligence. #raven #birdwatching

Have you ever seen a flash of bright blue in the trees of Canyonlands? These are Pinyon Jays, named after the trees they depend on for food. These Jays are found only where Pinyon Pine trees are present, making Canyonlands' Pinyon-Juniper Woodland ecosystem, a perfect home.

These rocks are striped with desert varnish. It can take thousands of years to create a layer of varnish that is the thickness of a sheet of paper! Many of the rocks in #Canyonlands are streaked with black, or washed with layers of orange or brown.

Canyonlands preserves unique layers rock up to 300 million years old, each with a distinct era and climate. Wingate and Navajo Sandstone formed when this region was a dry, hot desert, while the Moenkopi Formation, from swampy tidal flats. What sort of layer will you leave behind?

Palmer’s penstemon have landing stripes and a showy yellow staminode to attract pollinators. Staminodes are stamens that don't produce pollen. Instead pollen is on the inside of the flower where it rubs on the bee’s back as the bee goes inside for the flower’s nectar. #pollinator

Druid Arch has awed visitors of The Needles district of Canyonlands National Park for many years. Standing at 130 feet tall, this angular arch was named for its resemblance to Stonehenge in England - a place where druids went to worship.

Used by native peoples for thousands of years and expanded by John Sog Shafer in 1917 as a cattle trail, the Shafer Trail traffic started to boom with the hunt for uranium in the 1950’s. Parks preserve the present, and the multi-layered histories of the past. #WaybackWednesday

Canyonlands protects over 337,598 acres of desert landscape, but did you know it also preserves the night sky above? In some areas of the park, you can see up to 15,000 stars throughout the night, compared to the average 500 stars in cities. Now that's quite a sight! #DarkSkyWeek

It's hot out there! This means taking advantage of shade is a must while out enjoying the park. Hiking in the early morning or late evening, using a shade umbrella, and hunkering down in the shade of a canyon or tree to escape the mid-day sun are all great ways to beat the heat!

When hiking in the park, you may notice stacked rocks along the trail. These are called cairns. Rangers build cairns to help mark where to go on the trails. It is important to leave rocks where you find them and avoid knocking over existing cairns over to protect our living soil!

Our monsoon season has begun! Summer brings rain to large parts of the North American deserts, often in the form of late-afternoon thunderstorms. About a third of our annual rainfall is brought by monsoons! These storms can be as dangerous as they are beautiful.

What does it take to thrive in dark times? Sacred datura has tightly coiled flowers that unfurl into a very large trumpet shape overnight. A citrusy fragrance matched with bright white petals makes it easy for their hawkmoth pollinators to find them on a dark night. #nightblooms

How did those rocks get up there? Canyonlands has its share of balanced rocks and hoodoos, like these caprocks of White Rim Sandstone. With erosion resistant sandstone above the softer Organ Rock Shale below we get a variety of towering pillars in our lower canyons. #geology

Did you know that squirrels, like all rodents, exhibit dental self-care and chew with a purpose? A squirrel’s incisors will continue to grow throughout its lifetime. To prevent overgrowth, they chew on hard objects to file down their teeth.
