BREAKING: The anti-Catholic march due to pass St Alphonsus and St Mary's on Easter Sunday has been re-routed. The march will no longer pass any Catholic churches. Thank you to all those who raised objections!
We are horrified - but not surprised - at the assault by two uniformed men from the 'Drumchapel Protestant Boys' Orange Flute Band on a young woman trying tocross the road on Saturday am in Glasgow. We assume this will be investigated by
@policescotland
and the culprits charged.
We have been informed that BBC Scotland do not want to speak to our Chair as they have decided to talk to Show Racism the Red Card and a reporter. The Irish community have been attacked but lets talk about this without them in the room.
We stand by James McClean, who has endured anti-Irish racism for far too long without condemnation from the authorities, and without any action being taken. We are prepared to
#callitout
.
We note that the Apprentice Boys of Derry have cancelled their planned march on Easter Sunday after
@GlasgowCC
re-routed it away from Catholic churches. This underlines what we have always said: these marches are anti-Catholic and the purpose of them is to intimidate Catholics.
BREAKING: Glasgow Sheriff Court has upheld
@GlasgowCC
's decision to re-route four anti-Catholic marches away from St Alphonsus church this weekend. The court ruled that the council was acting within its powers. Thank you to all of you who have supported us - this is progress! 💪
In the last 10 days we have seen vandalism of a Catholic cemetery in Glasgow, anti-Catholic graffiti on a bus stop outside a Catholic Church in Lanarkshire and now an act of desecration of a Catholic Church in the West End of Glasgow. Please stand with us in challenging this!
We are sorry to say that there will be a procession of anti-Catholic marchers past St Alphonsus RC Church on London Road on Sunday 27 March (next Sunday) just after 10am. We call on our community and on all progressive people to join us in silent protest in opposition. RT please
We are delighted to say that the 4 marches in less than 24 hours due to take place on 1st and 2nd June are now going to be re-routed. Our deepest thanks go to everyone who has supported the protests. Your actions have been successful in showing
@GlasgowCC
that things must change.
📢 It's hard to describe how important these words from Cabinet Secretary
@HumzaYousaf
are. We have strongly campaigned for everyone to call out anti-Catholic bigotry and anti-Irish racism. Finally, there are signs that it is happening. And it's a huge moment for our community.
Two days in a row we have banner headlines in broadsheets attacking Catholic schools and accusing them of fomenting anti-Protestant bigotry. This follows weeks of Orange Order/loyalist bigoted violence. Does anyone have any doubt that Scotland is still an anti-Catholic country?
Important: We have just been informed that the organisers of the anti-Catholic march which was due to pass St Mary's in Abercromby St have submitted an amended route and will not now pass the church. We welcome this move and hope that the new route will be used in future.
Thanks to everyone who turned up this morning to stand in silent witness outside St Benedict's in Easterhouse including the local community, the trade unionists and socialists and the wider Catholic community. On this occasion we outnumbered the pitiful purveyors of bigotry.
This is a slap in the face for every Catholic/Irish Catholic who has ever voted Labour - and there are many. The Scottish Labour Party can no longer speak credibly on bigotry, hatred and inequality.
This morning a small number of women from the campaign peacefully staged a counter-protest against an anti-Catholic march past a Catholic Church in Glasgow. We will no longer stay silent in the face of hatred.
Many thanks to all those who attended our protests against anti-Catholic bigotry in Glasgow. Our community refuses to be silent and we will continue to challenge every bigoted march that we can that passes by a Catholic Church. Shame on those who have facilitated this today.
An anti-Catholic procession is due to take place past St Mary of the Assumption church in Abercromby Street on Friday 30/6/23.
@GlasgowCC
, having consulted
@PoliceScotland
see no reason to re-route it despite the request of the parishioners and us. Therefore we must respond.
Neil Lennon has once again been assaulted, and is now the subject of racially motivated threatening graffiti. Yet Nil By Mouth, Action On Sectarianism and Show Racism the Red Card have refused to
#CallItOut
for what it is, anti-Catholic bigotry and anti-Irish racism. So we will.
Thank you to everyone who came out this morning to stand in silent witness as, yet again, anti-Catholic bigots parade past St Alphonsus in an egregious act of hatred. Yet again we were subjected to filthy comments and a clear breach of the rules regarding music outside the church
CALL IT OUT: We're gathered here outside St Mary's Church in Glasgow, ready to stand in silent protest at an anti-Catholic march scheduled to pass imminently. Our community's message is clear - anti-Catholic marches should be re-routed away from Catholic churches.
The Scottish Government have today been instructed by a UN Committee to address anti-Irish racism and anti-Catholic bigotry in Scotland and to work with the Irish community in Scotland do so. We welcome this historic development and will comment further in due course.
We are pleased to inform you that the anti-Catholic march planned for Saturday (23rd) has been cancelled. The counter-protest will obviously not now go ahead. RT
We are calling on the Catholic/Irish Catholic community as well as all anti-discrimination organisations/individuals to stand with us on Easter Sunday outside the churches of St Alphonsus and St Mary's to defend our churches and fellow Catholics from anti-Catholic hatred.
It is with some distress that we wish to alert the Catholic/Irish Catholic community to a notification of a march by an anti-Catholic organisation which will pass both St Alphonsus and St Mary's, Calton on Easter Sunday. This is a blatant provocation and we will oppose it.
We warned you about this since at least 2018 - but your party in Government nationally and locally still want to treat them as a cultural group and us as equivalent and thereby enable what is happening now!
Disgraceful scenes in Glasgow tonight. Racist thugs shame Scotland. If they break the law, they should face the full force of it. And all of us should unite to say that welcoming refugees and asylum seekers is part of who we are.
Our chair
@JeanFind
:
@GlasgowCC
has the power to re-route anti-Catholic marches away from churches - they've been told this by the courts.
"Until then, all we can do is stand in witness to the hatred our community has had to put up with for its entire time in this country."
We send our unqualified solidarity to the teacher in question, and indeed to all who continue to face anti-Catholic bigotry in the workplace. There has been a concerted effort to shut down any and all forms of dissent towards the monarchy in recent weeks,
There are over 2100 streets in Glasgow - fewer than 60 have Catholic Churches on them. All we want is for anti-Catholic marches to be routed away from those streets. The rights of all communities need to be considered and respected.
What Neil Lennon has endured in Scotland because he is an Irish Catholic is unacceptable. What follows is just a snapshot of the hate and violence directed at Lennon. It is time to
#CallItOut
This is the kind of racism you don't notice - day after day, week after week, year after year, decade after decade. When are you going to call it out? You could start by recognising our community.
@scotgov
@GlasgowCC
As people across Scotland will no doubt be aware - although it is not often discussed in polite society - this weekend will see a riot of anti-Catholic bigotry paraded across the villages, towns and cities of Scotland. The press will list road closures
Following today's decision by
@GlasgowCC
to re-route an anti-Catholic march away from Catholic churches on Easter Sunday, our Chair
@JeanFind
on
@BBCScotNine
calls on the organisers of the march to make this decision voluntarily in future - it's time to stop anti-Catholic abuse.
As protesters stood in silence outside St Alphonsus church today they were met with anti-Catholic and anti-Irish chants of "Fenian bastards".
@GlasgowCC
continues to allow these marches to pass churches and in doing so fails to protect the minority Catholic community.
There can be no doubt about the nature of these marches. They are clearly intimidating towards the Catholic minority community. This is the church where a priest was assaulted last summer. Say it loud and clear to
@GlasgowCC
: Re-route ALL anti-Catholic marches away from churches.
If you want to understand how far we have to go in Scotland to address anti-Irish racism and anti-Catholic bigotry, ask yourself when was the last time you saw anyone from any other community challenging racism be asked 'but it is not just a one way street, is it?'
We’d like to thank our Protestant Christian brothers and sisters for their solidarity. Ecumenical relationships between Christian, Muslim, Jewish and other religious groups are a huge asset to our multi-faith and multicultural society. Anti Catholicism will no longer be tolerated
Thanks to all those who turned up to say no to hatred on the streets of Glasgow today. Our resolve is stronger than ever and those willing to stand with us are growing in number.
No to anti-Catholic marches past Catholic churches
No to institutional anti-Catholicism.
We stand in solidarity with Neil Lennon after yet another attack on him. The repeated targeting of NL because of his Irish Catholic background is deplorable and shames Scotland. Those who wish to victim-blame shoulder great blame for the continuation of this violence.
#CallItOut
Cabinet Secretary
@HumzaYousaf
sits down with the Orange Order - whose members and fellow travellers attacked asylum seekers on Wednesday. Within the last hour
@policescotland
kettle anti-racist demonstrators because they want to 'get' the Green Brigade. "
Once again the Processions Committee of Glasgow City Council have made a sensible, proportionate, lawful decision that given the clear risk to public order and disruption to life of community that the anti-Catholic parade due to pass St Alphonsus on 8/6/19 will be rerouted.
STAND WITH US: The Public Processions Committee will meet on Tuesday and you can register an objection to the route of the anti-Catholic march due to pass St Alphonsus and St Mary's on Easter Sunday. Email processions

Thank you to all who attended our peaceful protest today to oppose this morning’s anti-Catholic march passing St Alphonsus Church. Though our demonstration was silent, our message was loud and clear; we have had enough.
#CallItOut
At 12.30 today as anti-Catholic marchers went past the same Catholic Church for the second time in the space of three hours, ten women stood in the rain and said what all equalities campaigners should be saying - anti-Catholic marches should not be routed past Catholic Churches.
We conducted another peaceful and silent witness to an anti-Catholic march outside St Michael's this morning with an outward march during 10.30 Mass and a return march during 12 Mass.
If your response to mounting statistical evidence demonstrating that Irish Catholics face systemic discrimination in Scotland is an anecdotal tale from “losing a bet” and ending up in the opposing end from your own team at a cup final, you maybe don’t have the strongest argument.
"Having stood in the Celtic end at an Old Firm cup final and heard fans talking about stabbing Protestants, don’t tell me sectarianism is a one-way street" |
@johnmclellan
There are a number of other Catholic Churches, which we did not identify from the GCC website, that will be impacted tomorrow by organised hatred. If any local people are able to do so safely it would be useful for you to observe/record the conduct of marchers and share with us.
1) Police and GCC are giving conflicting accounts - we need transparency
2) 3 anti catholic marches will pass Catholic churches so we have asked for minor re-routes of 3 out of the 34 taking place on Saturday
3) GCC and the Police are incapable of protecting Catholics
At various points today, anti-Catholic marchers will be passing:
St Theresa's, Possil
St Vincent de Paul, Thornliebank
Immaculate Heart of Mary, Barmulloch
Our Lady of Lourdes, Cardonald
St Laurence, Drumchapel
If you are able to observe and video safely, please send to us.
Apparently there is a Glasgow Parade this Saturday. Is this a new thing, or have I been missing it all these years?
Sounds super! I love the community bonding.
NBM just can’t call this out for what it is. They struggle, no matter the context or circumstance, to spell it out. They opt for the catch-all equivalence of ‘sectarianism’, rather than describe the reality of raw, unbridled anti-Catholic bigotry and anti-Irish racism in our city
Utterly depressing to receive widespread reports of sectarian chanting and abuse in Glasgow City Centre yesterday. There is NEVER any moral, sporting or cultural excuse for such bigotry and actions.
'The practice of our faith is under attack'. Parish Priest of Sacred Heart and St Michael's Parish tells police. 9 double glazed windows at Sacred Heart smashed this morning following vandalism on the roof at the weekend. Our community must come together to support the Parish.
SUPPORT US: Services will be taking place on Easter Sunday when an anti-Catholic march passes two churches in Glasgow, causing severe distress to parishioners. The rights of the Catholic community must be respected and
@GlasgowCC
must re-route this march.
If you add to this the numerous recorded incidents of petty criminality routinely ignored by officers present then the public have a right to know why this is being condoned and accepted by both
@policescotland
and
@GlasgowCC
NBM have repeatedly refused to acknowledge the existence of anti-Irish racism and anti-Catholic bigotry, seeking to endlessly equivocate using the “two sides” narrative. They must stop speaking on behalf of our community. They are not equipped to educate others on our experiences
.
@NBMScotland
has offered to educate social media companies on sectarianism and anti-Irish racism in a bid to tackle the online hate and abuse connected to Scottish football.
#HateWontStopUs
Here is another section of the same parade - this time the Bridgeton No Surrender band stopping and playing for one and a half minutes almost directly in front of the church. This cannot be allowed to happen again.
This video shows how close the anti-Catholic parade was to St Conval's this evening. They were still passing the church when they began playing a tune to which the words used by bigots are 'No, no Pope of Rome, no chapels to sadden our eyes' etc etc. A complaint has been made.
We have written today to
@GlasgowCC
expressing our deep concern at the decision to route three parades past Catholic churches in Glasgow tomorrow.
We do not think it is too much to ask that minor route changes are agreed to reduce fear and distress in our communities.
The latest broadsheet attack on Catholic schools - the 3rd in 5 weeks - and yet again it is the
@heraldscotland
to the fore.
Yes let's have an open and honest debate - let's make it live and public as well. The
@heraldscotland
can organise it and we will debate all comers!
If the anti-Catholic march planned for Easter Sunday is not re-routed away from St Alphonsus and St Mary's in Glasgow, we are calling on all citizens to stand with us in protest outside both churches. We have endured this
intimidation for too long. It's time to
#CallItOut
This was not the only incident which the authorities should be looking at. Here the same band now in the Saltmarket plays a tune to which predictably their followers supplied the words - as usual they are delighting in the thought of being 'up to their knees in Fenian blood'.
Today members of the Catholic community, along with those standing in solidarity with us, gathered outside Blessed John Duns Scotus Church to hold a peaceful vigil in protest at anti-Catholic marches once again being permitted by authorities to march past our places of worship.
PLEASE SHARE: An anti-Catholic march will pass St Mary's in Abercromby St tomorrow evening. Once again the Catholic community faces intimidation.
@GlasgowCC
has rejected pleas to re-route the march, so please join us in a silent and peaceful protest outside St Mary's at 4.45pm.
PLEASE SHARE: On Saturday 11 May an anti-Catholic march is scheduled to pass St Mary’s Church in Glasgow. Again we must say to
@GlasgowCC
: Anti-Catholic marches should be re-routed away from Catholic churches. Email your objections urgently to processions
@ced

We have written to the Processions Committee of
@GlasgowCC
lodging an objection to the anti-Catholic march notified to go past St Mary's RC Church in Abercromby St, Glasgow on Friday 30 June.
Thanks to all who came to stand in silent, peaceful opposition to anti-Catholic marchers passing Blessed John Duns Scotus this morning. Your conduct stood in stark contrast to the conduct of the anti-Catholic marchers who disgraced themselves yet again.
Call it Out reps have walked out of the Scottish Government conference 'Tackling Hate Crime and Building Cohesive Communities' because we refused to talk about hate crime in a room alongside the upholders and prime promoters of hatred against the Catholic community.
Two Catholic workers have been forced off a prominent site in Glasgow run by a large construction company because of anti-Catholic behaviour from a fellow worker. This behaviour was reported but not dealt with.
@unitetheunion
@ScottishTUC
It is distressing, on such a joyful day in the Christian calendar, to have to respond to an inflammatory, racist post from a SG-funded organisation. We will write formally to you during the week to lodge a formal complaint. You should delete this post now.
Seeing a lot of this the last few days. Actually calling for violence around a football game! 🙈
Just a thought for these 'people' to ponder.
Going on previous stats domestic violence will increase by 90-140% in the 24 hours after the game.
These will all be innocent victims!
We can now stop saying 'allegedly' and acknowledge the serious anti-Catholic incident which took place last July. We will continue to oppose anti-Catholic marches past Catholic Churches and we call on all progressive citizens to join us.
There is an anti-Catholic march going past St Alphonsus Church tomorrow morning. CIO have organised a static counter-demonstration in line with our stated policy to oppose such marches passing Catholic Churches. We want this protest to be silent and peaceful.
PLEASE SHARE: Despite our campaign successfully resulting in the re-routing of 4 anti-Catholic marches this weekend, a much larger march is now set to pass St Alphonsus on 8 June. There will be at least 950 marchers. Email your objections urgently to gordon.fulton

Our Chair, Jeanette Findlay will be on
@BBCScotNine
tonight talking about the latest public display of anti-Catholic bigotry and anti-Irish racism and how Scotland needs to move away from false equivalence and start to name the problem, address it and defeat it.

Rubber / plastic bullets were created by the British Ministry of Defence in 1970 for use in the North of Ireland. Their use proved to be indiscriminate and lethal. 17 people were murdered by them. 16 Catholics and 1 Protestant. This included 8 children.
1. Bigots spit on priest and we ask them to stay away from our churches = we are discriminating against Protestants
2. We protest peacefully against anti-Catholicism = we are ratcheting up tensions
CIO won't be commenting further tonight on the dishonest and frankly, shameful, dissembling tweets from
@GlasgowCC
and
@policescotland
. Unless they are withdrawn we will publish, in full, all of the emails/texts from both orgs.
Arrangements for Saturday will be publicised soon
When we organised, with the support of the Irish community, the TU movement and other progressive people to defend the Catholic community and it's churches, George Square became the focal point for the far right bigots of the OO and it's hangers-on. If
@SusaninLangside
and
They come once again to defend statues? Shouting ‘Fenian Bastards’, singing ‘Rule Brittania’ whilst attacking asylum seekers protesting their living conditions - these are our streets, these Far-Right racist thugs cannot be allowed to do this
If
@policescotland
are of the view that 'There is nothing to suggest the incident is sectarian or hate crime', can we suggest that there is something seriously wrong with their protocols and/or training?
After the last festival of anti-Catholic hatred took place in the summer, we wrote to the
@ScotGovFM
and the Chief Constable of
@PoliceScotland
to seek a meeting. The FM ignored us and the CC offered us a sergeant to talk to. Meanwhile, attacks on our churches continue...
As hard hitting an interview as you will see in Scotland on the anti-Catholic bigotry and anti-Irish racism which exists in our society. We stand firmly behind Neil, and all victims of this hatred. The culture of victim-blaming must end. It is time for us all to
#callitout
"There's an effigy outside Tynecastle saying 'hang Neil Lennon'- that was before the game. Did I bring that on myself?"
@HibernianFC
head coach Neil Lennon hits back strongly at comments he is to blame for incidents at the Edinburgh Derby.
We are disappointed to learn that an anti-Catholic march has been approved for next Saturday (23rd) which goes down Abercromby St passing St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. We will be holding a peaceful counter-protest as the march passes and will be assembling at 11.15.
There appears to be a campaign of intimidation aimed at those people esp trades unionists who have supported our campaign to oppose anti-Catholic bigotry and anti-Irish racism. It's aim is to stop people mentioning this problem.
Important update - please read:
The anti-Catholic march by the ABOD notified for 14 November and which was highlighted by us at 5pm this evening appears to have been re-routed 'by agreement on 04/11/2021'. This is very good news for the parish and the wider Catholic community.
Delighted to announce that our new website is now live and we will now be in a position to keep you up to date on our campaign and on matters that affect the community. Hope you like it and thanks again to those who contributed to the cost!
In a brief but welcome respite for all the Catholics of the City of Glasgow there will be no anti-Catholic marches past any Catholic churches until at least 10th August and we very much hope that those listed for that day will be rerouted either voluntarily or by
@GlasgowCC
We are dismayed that
@PoliceScotland
has raised no concern about an anti-Catholic march due to pass two Catholic Churches this Easter Sunday. The Catholic community must be protected from intimidation. Email
@GlasgowCC
on processions
@ced
.glasgow.gov.uk to register an objection.
We will assemble at 6.15 in front of the Church. We call on all progressive people to join us to stand in solidarity with the Catholic population of the parish and all Catholics in Scotland who are so regularly and egregiously subjected to state-facilitated organised hatred.
Our chair
@JeanFind
spoke to That's TV about anti-Catholic marches passing Catholic churches: "Peace is not just the absence of violence. There is no peace when people are allowed to march in military fashion past your place of worship telling you that they don't like you."
There will be another anti-Catholic march on Saturday 18th which will pass St Alphonsus at approximately 12.30. Clearly we need much bigger numbers as
@policescotland
and
@GlasgowCC
are not listening to us. Please bring your TU or Party banners with you and email us in advance.
