I would also point out that just because the state falls short in coming to a solution, our Sheriff’s Office could adopt internal guidelines that are more humane without being mandated by the state. Again, why can’t we be a leader on this issue instead of a follower.

We need to adopt appropriate solitary confinement guidelines. Rather than lag behind other states we should strive to be a leader. This is 2023, not 1923 so we should be able to find a solution to the problem.

We are the only the police department in Virginia to successfully lobby for and gain a grant from the Virginia Risk Sharing Association (VRSA), they insure most municipalities in Virginia, to fully fund a mental health/wellness program for our Police Department. 1/2
