Britpop; the last great British music culture. Celebrated here forever. (Original writer/photo copyright details left in scans where possible). A "Tastemaker".
What’s the most “Dad album” you were brought up on? I’m going to say Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits. My Dad played this album a lot when I was a kid. It came out when I was 6 years old.

On this day 25 years ago the Britpop national anthem “Common People” by Pulp was released. This was a massive moment in the Britpop story, and the song rightly continues to be adored and held in high esteem.
🚨Huge Britpop anniversary alert!🚨
30 years ago today Blur released their first Britpop album "Modern Life Is Rubbish". It would become the first in a run of 3 albums called the "Life Trilogy".
What's your favourite track from the album?
Now, I'm not 100% sure which day of the month Select was published, but we're at the 30th anniversary of this watershed moment in British cultural history.
Famous for Stuart Maconie's article about the new British pop scene that was coming to the fore...the rest is history!
On this day 20 years ago I was at Wembley Stadium watching Oasis. A concert that they would record and release as Familiar to Millions. Who else was there?
This feels important, venues are being lost at an alarming rate, if we also lose the biggest "non arena" venue in London what will that say about the UK music scene.
One of the most famous NME covers of the 90's was published 25 years ago this week. The honeymoon period for Tony Blair's new
@UKLabour
government was over after only 10 months!
See the attached posts below for the related content.
What's your favourite Britpop non-album song release?
I'm going to say the 1994 single "Whatever" by Oasis. Released just before Xmas '94 but not quite making the 1994 Xmas number one accolade.
Yours?
🚨Huge Britpop anniversary alert!🚨
Happy 30th birthday to “Parklife” by Blur. This was their first album to reach number 1 on the UK chart and every studio album since has repeated the feat!
Favourite track? For me it’s “London Loves”.
@blurofficial
@DaveRowntree
So, one of Britpop’s biggest moments celebrates its 25th anniversary. Today in 1995 Oasis released Roll With It. They were pipped at the post by Blur, but what a great selection of b sides.
Ian Brown's debut solo album "Unfinished Monkey Business" turns 25 years old today.
For me this is Ian's best solo album. Mancunian guitar god Aziz Ibrahim is a big part of this album too.
What's your favourite track?
🚨Big Britpop anniversary alert!🚨
Happy 25th (correct UK) anniversary to "Ok Computer" by Radiohead. Considered by many to be their best album and an overall 90's high water mark.
What's your favourite track?
25 years ago today OCS released “The Riverboat Song” it was the first single from the bands second coming as it were. It’s in 6/8 timing which makes the track almost “skip” along.
The song is one of Britpop’s most famous due to its weekly use on TFI Friday.

Happy 25th anniversary to the live VHS (remember those?!) “There and Then” by Oasis which was recorded during their famous Earls Court shows and the Maine Road homecoming gigs.
Who still has their VHS copy? How about the bonus CD?
If you've never watched this then I thoroughly recommend you sit down and experience it tonight.
Without doubt one of the finest comedies this country has ever produced. Perfect location, amazing characters and lovely dialogue.
"To the regiment..."
I've not seen the (now infamous) Billy No Mates coverage. Seems that some people are upset that she was just singing along to a backing track. But wasn't this how Kanye and Stormzy did their much lauded headline sets?
What's the difference?
@Arwenstar
As someone who works in clinical diagnostics/pathology, I'll let you in on a little secret...
Cancer is nothing new and has always been a big issue. The thing is we're getting better at finding it through the use of tumour markers, etc.
Now stop trying to point score.
30 years ago tonight my parents were at the village pub, I was sat alone at home babysitting my brother and sister and as usual I was watching The Word.
Some new 5 piece guitar band from Manchester made their TV debut.
My life was changed forever.
So here we go. I'm signing off 1997's year of 25th anniversary posts with the Melody Makers top 50 albums of the year.
If you only read one top 50 album chart this year then make it this one.
I've got 21 of them, how many did you buy?
Do you agree with the Maker's ranking?
This is a very sad and poignant piece of writing by Martin's son.
It doesn't paint Primal Scream in a very good light which surprised me because Bobby Gillespie is such a keen socialist/Corbynite.

's death: His son Louie was praised for being a strong advocate for his father and gave a full statement to the inquest. Extracts have been reported but he wanted this evidence made available in full (Martin would be v proud)
“Let’s go gigging” returns.
Usual rule. You can choose one gig from these four pages of 1993 adverts. There’s a lot of gigs to scan here so take your time!
Where will you be going?
25 years ago this week the cover stars and big feature in the NME weren't a band, it was Ted and Ralph AKA Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson.
Easy to forget just how massive The Fast Show was in the 90's.
Today is the anniversary of Paul Weller’s finest album (and yes that does include The Jam and TSC). Probably my best loved album of all time. Hard to choose a favourite track but Broken Stones will be my funeral song and Whirlpools End is stunning. Why was the release 9:30am?
@AyoCaesar
Why did you take a Palestinian flag to the pub?
I think I've taken an England flag to the pub once in my life, and that was in 2003 after we won the rugby World Cup!
Gigging...1997 style!
You can go to just one of these gigs. Which night out takes your fancy?
I'm going to go and see
@shedseven
at the Forum in Kentish Town.
Happy 25th anniversary to "This Is Hardcore" by Pulp.
Single of the week in the Melody Maker as chosen by Saint Etienne.
This post is dedicated to the memory of Steve Mackey.
Here’s
@themarkrad
and
@marcrileydj
in an advert for their new breakfast show on
@BBCR1
which started 25 years ago today.
(Cash and birds just about to roll in I guess!).
Today is the 20th anniversary of Richard Ashcroft’s debut solo album “Alone With Everybody”. What’s your favourite track? I’m going with Brave New World.
I realise I’m 44 and a little out of touch, but…
Raye has just broken the all time Brit awards win record with 6. I’ve never heard of her or knowingly heard her music. The previous record was jointly Blur, Adele and Harry Styles and all of those are household names. 1/2
25 years ago tonight Oasis played Sheffield Arena. Notable for two reasons: Tony’s last gig and the debut of Don’t Look Back In Anger.
Local band Pulp supported.
On this day in 1996,
@TheBluetones
released their debut studio album, Expecting To Fly.
Quite frankly, an amazing album! It knocked the Oasis album, What's the Story) Morning Glory? of the number 1 spot in the UK charts!
@TheQuill
@DonnaWhitehead9
Is there anything more British than the polite knowing smile from the bald headed chap. The smile of knowing someone is enjoying themselves but thinking “oh God I could never do that!”
I’m glad
@BBCTwo
aired the
@liamgallagher
documentary tonight. Hopefully more people will see Liam for the person is actually is rather than the tabloid’s portrayal of him. He’s a good person.
Those who know me or have followed this account for long enough will know that this album is one of my all time favourites.
Not a weak track on it and the level of musicianship is off the scale!
Popped into my local Oxfam bookstore this morning to check out the music section.
Nice old boy at the counter notices I’m flicking through a Beatles book, comes back with this from the stock room…
“Would sir like this?”
Yes, sir very much would!!!
25 years ago today British music changed forever when Oasis released their debut single Supersonic. What a song, and great b sides too, as would become the norm.
Released on this day in 1995. Happy 24th anniversary to All Change by
@castofficial
Has to be one of the best debut albums in my lifetime. Stand out track for me is History.
Major anniversary time!!!!!
25 years ago today Blur released the brilliant Parklife album. A massive moment in Britpop history.

30 years ago today Pulp released (in my opinion) their best album; “His ‘n’ Hers”.
What’s your favourite track? Mine is “Acrylic Afternoons”.

Not many albums capture the feeling of life in the British post 90's malaise than this absolute work of art.
To think it was written by a band who only formed a year before is incredible.
Take a bow
@theenemyband
Happy 30th anniversary to the amazing "Sunflower" by Paul Weller.
Probably my favourite Weller written song of all time.
(Also has Steve White's best drum track).
So now there's a new Blur album it's time to redo their best tracks:
Leisure - She's So High
MLIR - For Tomorrow
Parklife - London Loves
TGE - Yuko and Hiro
Blur - Death of a Party
13 - Trimm Trabb
Think Tank - Out Of Time
Magic Whip - Lonesome Street
Balled of Darren - Barbaric
🚨Huge Britpop anniversary alert!🚨
25 years ago today Shed Seven released their sing-a-long anthem “Chasing Rainbows”.
The greatest Britpop gig ending song?
25 years ago today The Stone Roses (finally) released the album “Second Coming”. What’s your favourite track from it? Hard to look beyond Love Spreads in my opinion.
Is there a better TV sports presenter than the legendary Hazel Irvine who does the snooker for
@BBCSnooker
@BBCSport
Knows the sport inside out, always speaks well about the subject and comes across very well.
Even
@Joey7Barton
couldn't complain about her😉
On this day 25 years ago members of various Britpop bands such as Blur, Oasis, Reef, Gene, and The Bluetones played in a charity football day at Mile End Stadium.
Reef won the tournament.
25 years ago this week the NME's "On" section introduced us to a new band called Gomez.
They turned out to be one of the best bands of the post Britpop era that was just brewing at this point.
