My Dad died yesterday after a long illness. He hardly drank at all but he had a strange obsession with Pontet Canet. We drank it at his 80th birthday a few years ago and drank a bottle to his memory last night.
Irish companyโs contact tracing app to go live in US - well done

The evidence that
@wereontheditch
was a political project from inception is there for anyone to see. If Chay Bowes gave a f**k about corruption per se, he wouldn't be shilling for Putin's Russia, one of the most corrupt countries, and governments, in the world. But he is...
Seems strange to be a bit emotional about the result of an election thousands of miles away. That shows how important this win is for the world. Congratulations
@JoeBiden
. Here's to the return of decency. Let's hope the damage done the past four years can be repaired.
#NPHET
's opposition to antigen tests has always baffled me. I've to go to hospital today because my father is ill. No symptoms, but a quick test this morning is added protection for all concerned. Surely better than no test?
Very proud that New York and New Jersey have now launched Covid apps using the Irish app's technology. Northern Ireland, Scotland, Gibraltar, Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware have also launched apps based on the Irish source code, which we made available for free to others.
Just got me some of that Pfizer mRNA science-magic in my arm. Back home in barely an hour...and that included time for the
@HSELive
staff to deal very professionally with my embarrassing vasovagal reaction ๐คซ. Pretty impressive operation at the

Nails it. Ireland's ranking as 3rd best European tech city of the future is largely driven by our success with FDI. We need to MUCH more to develop our own tech startups. via
@IrishTimes
Well worth reading this entire thread. Reality check for the "Ireland is shit" brigade. If you are in the 5th,10th or even 50th percentile of disposable income, you are hugely better off in Ireland than in the UK or US (and many other countries).
Joking aside for a change, this is my grand-nephew, Frankie. He's 2, and doing Movember with me. He's also being treated for a rare cancer at
@CMRF_Crumlin
. He had a liver transplant in Birmingham in the middle of the first lockdown. He's a little trooper... /1
A: I'm thinking of raising a round...
B: You should talk to Brian Caulfield.
A: You mean the cocktail guy on Twitter???
I may have irreparably damaged my brand during COVID.
At bloody last: a journalist who faces a politician and says with force: โYou know nothing about whatโs going on, even inside the cabinet. We are a laughing stockโ. Thank you
@jonsnowC4
for saying, what so many are shouting at, from behind our screens.
Yesterday, my friend and colleague from
@techireland
,
@sreedom_fighter
became an Irish citizen. Sree has made an enormous contribution to the Irish tech community over the years. We are very lucky to have him as a citizen. I couldn't be happier for him and for us.
Whatever you think about
@paddycosgrave
, he is putting his money where his mouth is with this initiative. Also delighted that they are partnering with
@ChangexHQ
to distribute this funding to community initiatives all across Ireland. Well done to all.
Web Summit has decided to donate โฌ1 million to Irelandโs fight against Covid-19
We hope our donation inspires other businesses & the wealthiest in Ireland to do likewise
Weโre in this fight together. And we will only prevail by standing together ๐๐๐ฎ๐ช
Sadly, I think I might be more Ned Flanders than Tom Selleck๐. I've increased the target for my Movember fundraising...and I'll increase the match. For every โฌ, I'll also donate a โฌ to
@CMRF_Crumlin
up to โฌ10,000.
In many different fields, outsiders overestimate the value of ideas and underestimate the difficulties of execution.
So it's probably a good strategy for learning about any new field to ask "why is execution harder than it seems to outsiders?"
Wouldn't it be a better idea to locate public servants in existing hubs alongside startups and self-employed people? In the community rather than isolated from it. A few people from
@EnterInnov
and
@IRLDeptFinance
in
@dogpatchlabs
or
@RDIhubIreland

Anyone who thinks that these trips are fun "junkets" hasn't a clue. They are grueling schedules of endless meetings, travel and events selling on behalf of Ireland and the Irish people.
Rory Hearne thinks Ministers & the Taoiseach shouldn't travel abroad for St. Patrick's Day. The most powerful man in the world overseeing the biggest economy in the world, is devoting his entire diary to Ireland today and the geography genius thinks we should give that up.
I was starting to worry about my mental health...envying culchies with their mountains, lakes and beaches in their 2km zone (you're not fooling me)...then I realised I have this in my back garden. That's an extraordinary privilege in current circumstances...
Absolutely horrific thread about what is happening in the parts of Ukraine that the Russians have already occupied. This is what โliberationโ means.
A longer thread ๐งต on the alarming situation in

's occupied southeast. The developments are fluid and both alarming and inspiring.
What we are seeing there is the attempt to set up Stalin-like police states (dressed as "People's Republics"). Worst is yet to come. /1
Hustle-porn bullshit. Some of us still have jobs to do and they are harder then they ever were. To say nothing of those trying to home-school their kids at the same time.
Second dose done and dusted. Efficient, and relentlessly cheerful service once again by

A huge pleasure to meet Senator George Mitchell at

So, here it is -

for startups. Curb your enthusiasm and roll out the usual cliches - "missed opportunity", "failure of imagination", etc.
@IRLDeptFinance
I was asked by participants on the
@IgniteAccelNI
event on Friday how founders should respond to the current
#CoronaVirus
crisis. I donโt think that Iโve anything wildly original to add but, nonetheless, here goes โ Iโll at least try to be very specific... 1/13
My younger brother, Conor, died unexpectedly in June. I expected to hate this but it turned out to be a pretty accurate analogy for how grief evolves...at least in my experience.
After what has been a surprisingly okayish Christmas, I had a moment today in SuperStore. Saw a lady who reminded me of my 92yo grandma, who even in the early stages of dementia, completely understood that my mom died.
I thought Iโd share the Ball in the Box analogy my Dr told me
The thing that thrills me most about the
@NearForm
story is that this is being done in Tramore (pop. c.11,000) - albeit 10km from Waterford. There are at least 60 larger towns in Ireland. No reason why, with the right policies, we can't have similar companies around the country.
With just a week to go, I give you...Brian Burgundy. Just a few more donations for a couple of great causes will make it stop. For every โฌ donated to Movember, I'll add a โฌ for
@CMRF_Crumlin
. Feel free to RT...
Just been completing an
@AskAIB
application to open a new company bank account. 36 pages including the T&Cs. Torture. Had to fill in my address 9 times and sign 5 times. It's a paper form. There's no option to generate it online. Lads get with the program - trivial to fix this.
I think one of the most important aspects of the "new"
@NDRC_hq
is the regional focus. Startups are already bringing high-quality jobs small towns all around the country. This is an opportunity to accelerate that.
Arlene Foster states โas someone who lived through the troubles we never had a hard border in Irelandโ.
Extraordinary, disingenuous assertion that will come as news to many.
Meanwhile in Russia: famous Russian singer Vika Tsyganova and her husband Vadim share their antisemitic beliefs in their startling interview with journalist Yury Dud. They claim that the Jews are to blame for Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
You have to hand it to
@DavidMcredmond

@Postvox

John Concannon is a highly effective, committed and hard-working public servant who could certainly have made a lot of money in the private sector but chose not to. It's disappointing to see him characterised as "former spin unit chief".
@JCGalway
I tweeted this almost two years ago. At the time, I thought the grief "ball in the box" would just keep getting smaller. It doesn't. I don't know if it's
#COVID
or Christmas but I've been thinking an awful lot about my brother the past couple of weeks. It's hard. 1/2
My younger brother, Conor, died unexpectedly in June. I expected to hate this but it turned out to be a pretty accurate analogy for how grief evolves...at least in my experience.
I got a present of this very nice bottle of Irish gin. Really clever, impressive packaging. I can't wait to try it and I'm willing to risk the intellectual decay and ruin...might be too late anyway.
Scale Ireland strongly welcomes
#Budget2024
measures for tech start-ups and scaling companies as 'a big boost for entrepreneurs'.
We are also seeking further clarity on the terms of the reduced CGT for Angel Investors.
We regret to announce that further to his diagnosis of cancer announced on 17 May 2019, Founder and Chief Executive Officer Brian Conlon passed away on 28 July. We offer our sincerest condolences to Brian's family during this difficult time.
So, a final update on my

fundraising...no more mo pictures, I promise. Thanks to the fantastic matching donation from
@jamesonwhiskey
, I (I mean we) raised almost โฌ35k for men's health. Thank you all so very much... 1/3
Ireland's Covid Tracker app has now notified almost 7,500 (completely anonymous) close contacts. If the positivity rate was only 5%, that's 375 chains of transmission broken. It's a real shame only one third of people are using the app. Get it here:
At NearForm we have developed multiple

app solutions for governments in Europe and the U.S. We understand the importance of keeping personal details private and have worked closely with Google, Apple and various governments to ensure users data remains anonymous.
Interesting to hear the Minister of Economy of Portugal, Pedro Siza Vieira, telling
#Venture

#WebSummit2019
that they are exempting options in early stage companies from Capital Gains Tax. Portugal, Spain, France all now moving quickly to improve their startup ecosystems.

Irish startup people,
@IRLDeptFinance
is running a public consultation on the SURE and EIIS schemes. Unfortunately, the deadline for submissions is 28th May. Make your views known! Details are here:
It's encouraging that there's broad consensus on many of the challenges facing Ireland's innovation-drive enterprises.
@ScaleIreland
and
@DubCham
with similar pre-budget policy asks...
WeWork's CEO tells WSJ there is an easy way for companies to spot their most engaged employees: Theyโre the ones who want to come back to the office. โThose who are least engaged are very comfortable working from home,โ he said.
For those of us who lived through the DotCom boom, this is eerily resonant of when, for example, Fyffes launched "WorldofFruit", their internet fruit marketplace...
Delighted to see this early-stage fund launched. It's a concrete vindication of the work that
@ScaleIreland
has done to REFORM
#EIIS
. Hopefully, we will see many similar funds launched radically improving access to seed capital.
Extraordinary thread. I think one of the great advantages that Europe has over the US (which we probably fail to exploit) is that (most) kids can get an (almost) free college education. We've got to be proud of that and keep doing that...
I grew firmly at the bottom of the Middle Class. Sometimes we had pancakes for dinner because that's all we could afford. My parents managed to scrape by each month, but there wasn't much left over.
They sure as hell couldn't afford to send me to college.

Well done, Eamon. Start-ups are experiments and this is the natural end-point for most of them. It's great to see you confront that honestly and not dress it up as something it isn't...but I know to expect that honesty from you.
The whole "European VCs are shit, that's why there are no great companies in Europe" narrative is grating on me. You realise the alternative explanation is "European entrepreneurs are shit..."? Of course, neither are true. 1/
Proud that
@MartinaFitzg
and
@ScaleIreland
have played a key role in bringing this about. Increasingly, Europe must act together rather than individual countries going it alone.
Tonight, Ireland as part of the European Startup Nations Alliance launched at the
@WebSummit

@paddycosgrave
Except the tax paid on income over โฌ100,000 in Ireland isn't 48%...it's 52% for PAYE workers and 55% for self-employed/proprietary directors when USC and PRSI are included...
My younger brother died suddenly last summer. He was about the same age as Raphael. This was gut-wrenching for me to read and took a long time. It must have been so very hard to write. ..but itโs a beautiful, brave piece of writing
@PaulKimmage
.
Yes, real insight from
@marklittlenews
. You don't see the failed exits reported in the newspapers...or most of the failed startups that are quietly put out of their misery....
This from
@marklittlenews
on this weeks
@Allin_Business
show, is simply incredible. An unbelievably honest assessment of what a successful exit feels like. Loved this.
Very, very worrying to see a 47% fall in the value of VC deals in the โฌ1m-โฌ5m range, with the number of deals down 42%.
@ScaleIreland
have been highlighting this problem for several years now but we really need action now
@IRLDeptFinance
@DeptEnterprise
.
This is the grave of my wife's great-great-grandparents and four of their children, all of whom died in infancy in the space of just less than two years. A stark reminder of how far we have come and how much better our world is now in spite of the tribulations of 2020.
I think that, at the least, NPHET need to articulate in clear simple terms why Ireland is different to practically everywhere else in Europe where there is indoor dining and large crowds at football matches...
... and Ireland is materially worse than the UK in this respect. Huge shortage of early stage capital because there is no angel market. Small rounds at poor valuations, excessive cost of capital at early stage.
Time is the killer of companies.
Core problem of UK tech ecosystem, we starve our companies of early financing.
Rounds are small.
They have limited runway.
When V1 does not work, they have to raise again to try V2. Nightmare.
In the US, $4M seed and a different game.
It's even worse than that, if you question the logic of zero-COVID (for Ireland), you are practically accused of being in the same category as a climate-change denier. I agree that this is an important intervention.
This intervention on Zero COVID is really important
There's been a creeping sense lately that if you're not "with" zero COVID, you're somehow not interested or not serious about bringing cases down
But you couldn't get a more serious group than NPHET
And they're not "with" it
For all those CEOs whose personal assistants are emailing me to set up an appointment to discuss their fundraising, you may have been missing out on what's happening in the world right now...not that it was ever a smart strategy...
This is my "later" plan. Not just any old 12 year old Redbreast. This is the good stuff from before they closed the Dublin distillery in 1971. I won't mention the gentleman that gave it to me, other than to say that he is an absolute gentleman ๐.
