Public Libraries can be wonderful places where children and adults can find books that they can see themselves reflected in, no matter who they are, and books that can introduce them to entire other lived experiences. Both are so valuable!

There’s a scene in Arrested Development where Lindsay starts a bead business and Gob mishears it as bees and the exchange kills me every time because he sounds angrier when it is beads than when it is bees.

When I had my second child my oldest was 4, and she asked if we could “Make Lucy an egg again please” about 3 weeks after we came home from the hospital.

I do not have the mental energy to express how disgusting this is except through the low disgruntled noise that came out of my throat while reading it.
I’m so proud and emotional to see my father’s name on this list of recipients for the Order of Canada, along with the other members of Buddy Wasisname! A huge honour.
Governor General Mary Simon has announced 99 new Order of Canada appointments, recognizing Canadians from a range of backgrounds for their contributions to the country. Hockey player Sidney Crosby and actor Eugene Levy are among the appointees.
Today is my dad’s birthday. To a lot of people here he’s a comedian and a musician but to me he’s always just been my dad, who taught me to ask questions, stay engaged, and to always help others when I can. Happy birthday to him!
7 years ago we got married in my parent’s backyard. I wore green and we said vows to our 4 month old, who is now about to start grade 2. We cleared out the shed to make a dance floor. Despite the fact that it was 7 degrees that day, it’s the best wedding I’ve ever attended.
Hi if someone tells you that their grandfather has Covid and your response is that he’s old anyway, please know that the person is well within their rights to unhinge their jaw and swallow you whole.
This month my youngest sister got married, and it was the first time my immediate family had been together in over two years so enjoy our most recent family picture.
A friendly reminder that JKR has spent the last few years using her platform to attack and incite fear against trans people, a group that already faces marginalization and violence at higher rates, which has had a direct result of extra violence against them. That is hate.
I know this is a take many book worms don’t agree with, but life is too short to finish a book you don’t like. There’s no prize for finishing the book. Just more books you might have liked better that you won’t have time to read now because you were finishing something you hated.
Hi hello! Did you know that you can disagree with someone, even about terrible and complicated things, without insulting their appearance, bringing up their gender identity, or threatening them in any way? It seems worth repeating.
It’s my birthday and I had to cancel my lunch out with friends because I have Covid like symptoms and even though I tested negative I still want to be a good citizen so I’m staying home but I’m going to be sooky about it.
My sister got married yesterday after two years of deferred weddings, a Hurricane, and covid being a stressful factor, and it was perfect. My family hasn’t been together in two years so this whirlwind of a weekend has been so full of joy.
What if, instead, we actually did things that are proven to make people healthier, like improve access to healthy food, bring down grocery costs, make cities more walkable, and didn’t do whatever this is.
I bought 3 rapid tests yesterday for almost sixty dollars. Not something I can afford to do regularly. If we aren’t offering PCR tests, and want people to isolate if they have Covid, then you have to help them figure out if they have Covid in an affordable and easy to access way.
NL public health says if you don't qualify for PCR testing you can use a rapid test, but there are no plans to hand them out, so you'll have to buy one yourself (they have been difficult to get and cost around $15 a test)

Sometimes when I am not ok it actually makes me feel worse to have people tell me all the reasons it could be worse or why it’ll be fine. Let people feel their feelings. Sometimes we don’t look for solutions, just empathy and understanding.
If you think that talking to kids about pride- being open with them that love and identity look a thousand different ways- is grooming, you have walked so deeply into your own hatred that you’ve gotten lost in it. Knowing about this stuff doesn’t hurt kids. Hiding it does.
Today is my 40th birthday, which comes along with a lot of weird feelings about growing older as a woman in the world, but also feels pretty cool since at 40 I feel more myself than I ever have. I hope 50 feels just as good!
One thing I don’t talk about enough is just how much money having a library card has saved my family. As times get tougher it’s good to remember that the public library has all kinds of things (board games, DVDs, magazines) that they’re already buying so that you don’t have to.
Some of the comments here are really awful. The transphobic and anti LGBTQ+ rhetoric has gotten much worse over the last few years and pretending like online comments don’t have real world reflections helps no one. Call it out.
Me, meeting someone from Grand Falls: “oh my husband is from Grand Falls!”
My husband, bursting through the wall from another room: “I’m from WINDSOR.”
Every day I wake up and can’t believe that more people don’t use libraries here in NL. They’re free and in times of economic hardship they’re a bastion of materials and services that you have to pay for otherwise.
It feels strange to have good news right now but I’m pleased to announce that in the new year I’ll be moving into a new job as the Children’s & Youth Collections & Services Librarian at the NLPL!!
I see people post about being accepting of those with different opinions and I want to say that a difference in opinion is whether you like pineapple on pizza or if you think heavy metal is good music, not whether trans people exist or if entire groups of people are bad actually.
As a NLer I am contractually bound to find very nice weather on the May long weekend suspicious and will act like it might turn at any minute, while frantically taking advantage of it at the same time.
My dentist recently told me that sometimes people fall asleep in the chair when getting dental work done and I have never related to anything less in my entire life.
I often see people talk to service employees in ways they would never talk to anyone else and it always solidifies in my mind that everyone should have to work a shitty service job in their youth to keep them from being less awful later in life.
@clhubes
My then 4 year old’s deepest complaint was that her baby sister wouldn’t stop looking at her and she would cry and demand that we make the baby stop looking at her and then would have a meltdown when the baby remained having eyes.
We’ve reached the point in the pandemic where my husband, who got really into birdwatching during the great birdwatching renaissance of last year, has started naming the regular birds at our backyard feeder after current WWE wrestlers.
One day when this is over I want to actually meet some of the wonderful people I interact with on twitter. Dreaming of holding court at some pub where people can drop by and say hi one day.
If you are from Newfoundland and Labrador and you now live somewhere that gets spring, please know that I am truly happy for you, and also envy you deeply.
@clhubes
My 3 year old only wants to wear blue because chase from the Paw Patrol wears blue but not every blue is blue enough so she’s been wearing the same blue dress for a week and I’ve just been washing it while she sleeps because I dare not disturb this equilibrium.
Legitimately one of the biggest barriers for me ever getting into politics is how many people think disagreeing with a stance means heaping harassment and attacks upon you, instead of engaging with an issue in a healthy way. I see a lot of you doing it and it needs to stop.
You can disagree with people without calling them names. You can disagree with people without calling them stupid. You can disagree with people without swearing at them. You can disagree with people without insulting their appearance.
Everyone who told me that I was wrong to worry about this because it was happening in the states and we are a different country can go suck an egg. This is horrifying.
I love how the entirety of the Avalon peninsula becomes a completely different place when the sun starts shining in the spring. People are outside, everyone is smiling, the vibes are positive. It’s like a switch is flipped as we’re all dosed with vitamin d.
Day 5 of isolating with 2 sick children and I’m finding it hardest how many people are dismissive when I tell them I’m worried about long Covid or reinfections given how quickly it spread through schools this time.
I’m on vacation this week visiting family in central NL but I’m going to be on Crosstalk tomorrow in my role as a children’s librarian as kids call in to tell us what they’re reading and I can’t wait because it’s legitimately one of the most fun parts of my job.
A friendly reminder from your neighborhood Children’s Librarian that Dr. Seuss was not canceled. The Dr. Seuss company decided not to keep printing certain books with incredibly racist imagery because they recognized they were a really bad legacy.
The public library is a great place to visit before the holidays. You can load up on books, movies, board games, and more, all for free, at a time of the year your wallet is likely feeling the strain.
A short, age appropriate conversation about the war just led to my 7 year old asking if Paradise was going to invade St. John’s one day. She doesn’t think so because, and I quote, “Mount Pearl is in the way”.
Newfoundlanders 3 months out of the year: “This is GOD’s country! I pity everyone who doesn’t live here. This is the best place on earth!”
Newfoundlanders the rest of the year: Screaming, crying, shaking their fists at the sky.
Very relieved to get negative test results today for both myself and 5 year old. Now I can finally go buy enough groceries to not leave the house again for two more weeks.
I know the sun is shining and no one wants to be reminded of Covid but if you have Covid symptoms, even if you’re testing negative, or think you’ve been exposed to Covid, please wear a mask in public spaces. Please do not accidentally infect other people.
As transphobic rhetoric rises even further and people feel emboldened to say vile things, I feel the need to state that if you don’t think that transphobia is a dealbreaker- if you don’t think trans men are men and trans women are women- there’s no place for you here with me.
If you are living through an Ontario peach season please eat a peach for me, a person who visited Ottawa 9 years ago and ate an entire basket of peaches and has been mad at the grocery store peaches here in NL ever since.
