For all my Detroit followers: I just now got some AWFUL news! My one-time WRIF sidekick Ken Calvert died today. Such a terrific guy and one of the true legends of Michigan radio & rock 'n roll. I have nothing more to say other than that I'm heartbroken - & I'm not alone either.

I just now saw that Jimmy Carter is dying, going into hospice care in his home. He's 98. What a life!!! You may not have agreed with his politics or thought he was a great POTUS, but he always seemed like a fine, caring, decent man to me.

I was just told that Don Shane is dead. The long-time Detroit TV sportscaster, who also worked in Boston & Chicago, had been suffering first from Parkinson's & then the dreaded dementia. I always liked Donnie, we got along well. Way too young to have this happen to him! Sad day.

Ex-Mets TV man Steve Zabriskie told me he was doing a game with Kiner, who, uh, liked a drink or 3. Lee comes on-deck beneath them to pinch hit. Ralph points, mouths, "Who is THAT?" In disbelief, Steve writes "MAZ!" Kiner: Pinch-hitting next for the Mets will be Bill Mazeroski.

During that span Donnie Baseball was one of the greatest all-around players who ever LIVED! Not in the HOF because back issues precluded him from being the same again. Koufax also had only 6 good yrs, quit due 2 injuries but went out on top. That's why he IS in. BOTH should be.

Where the game was basically just a RUMOR - especially from the CF bleachers which were 440 feet away from home plate! And don't forget all the "obstructed view" seats which were behind the myriad posts. Yet (sigh) Briggs/Tiger Stadium was MY ballpark - and I loved it dearly.

It was my pleasure to work at MSG with Ken for several years. I'd interviewed him a number of times during his playing career & he hadn't changed: a consummate gentleman at all times! I once asked him on the radio why he was such a nice guy. "I owe it to my parents," he said.

A really nice guy but painfully shy. After he'd been a hero in a World Series game at San Diego in '84, he hid in the trainer's room. We had a good relationship so I stood at the door saying a big throng of national media were outside; he HAD to come speak to us! He never did.

The best local TV News anchor I ever saw (incl my yrs in NY) was Detroit's Bill Bonds. I worked w him 2 yrs. Ted Knight did an appearance on our Ch 7, then went into Bonds' empty office. When he arrived, Ted was relaxing in Bonds' chair, said, "Sorry, Bill. You've been replaced!"

Won the Maxwell Trophy, nation's best player, as a SAFETY for a mediocre Michigan State team (I was THERE)! Also played a little basketball & with a 95-mph fastball pitched some for the baseball team. Larger than life at MSU! GOOD guy died tragically of a heart attack at just 57.

I "blocked" 2 guys today - unusual for me. I was warned when Drew & Eli asked me to join Twitter 3 yrs ago there were a lotta jerks here. I have NOT found that true. I've blocked 20-25, not bad for a long-time opinionated sportscaster! No name-calling, be RESPECTFUL is all I ask.

THE worst umpire in MLB history - perhaps with Emmett Ashford? MLB has learned you can't simply fire an affirmative-action hire. They already tried that with this guy! I just do not know how Angel Hernandez can look himself in the mirror and keep working.

@Jimfrombaseball Cool pic of Gibson with glasses. I had him on TV shows & liked him. I also had Ryne Duren on - great guy. Ryne deliberately wore glasses so hitters would think he had no idea where HIS 100+ mph fastballs were going - & sometimes he didn't! Gibby shoulda kept HIS scary glasses!

THIS Detroit boy was first an Ohio St fan! WHY? I saw Tom Matte play QB 4 OSU on TV & loved him! My 1st U-M v OSU game? '61 at Ann Arbor. Rooted 4 the BUCKS, their 18-yr-old soph wideout PAUL WARFIELD, Bob Ferguson & (future Tigers pitcher) QB Joe Sparma. (I DID wise up later!)

THAT is what the great Mike Schmidt looks like now?! He's one of the very few MLB players about whom there can be NO arguments. Brooks Robby was better defensively, Eddie Mathews was great both ways, but Schmidt IS the greatest all-around third baseman who ever lived.

Drafted by the FL's out of Florida St in '65. Owner Blithering Billy Ford & his evil, incompetent henchman Russ Thomas lowballed Biletnikoff AND John Hadl AND Johnny Robinson, whom they also drafted. Thomas growled, "There's no way those guys will sign with that BULLSHIT league!"

I covered him from Day One with the Tigers in '76. We had a family reunion in Anaheim years ago. Mark and I were SHOCKED to run into each other at the hotel! He was signing at a card show. My mother loved The Bird. I took a pic of the two of them. It's up in my home to this day.

Bernie Carbo was from my original hometown of Livonia, Michigan & is another example of a former MLB player who had to (gulp!) WORK for a living when his career ended - unlike the pampered, multi-millionaires of today. Bernie came back home to Detroit - and became a hairdresser!
