Our No 1
#Corrie
favourite - Annie Walker, played by Doris Speed. Annie could infuriate us with her snobbishness and bitchery, move us to tears during her vulnerable scenes, and make us laugh as her grandiose schemes came unstuck. There was warmth and wisdom too. A true legend.
Good morning all! We were just thinking about the days when Coronation Street looked like this, and Renee Bradshaw had the Corner Shop. Don't know why. These sort of things just pop into our heads sometimes.
Zeph Gladstone, Vera Downend in
#Crossroads
, bought all Vera's clothes and ear rings - but the studio stipulated that everything had to be in bad taste! Vera carried it off beautifully. I remember when her boat sprang a leak! Probably my all-time favourite motel character.
#1970s
1979: short article about another of our all-time
#Crossroads
favourites - Angus Lennie, who was Shughie McFee, the temperamental Scottish chef at the motel. Angus was a great bloke. We still treasure a lovely letter we received from him 'back in the day'.
Margaret John was a highly successful Welsh actress. Who remembers her as Marian Owen, receptionist at the King's Oak Group Practice, in
#Crossroads
? Marian, a childless widow, spent huge amounts of time trying to make life better for others. A lovely character.
Coronation Street took an alarming tumble in the TV ratings in the mid-1970s. Bill Podmore was brought in to rescue the show. Two of his best innovations were to welcome back Pat Phoenix as Elsie Tanner and to install Renee Bradshaw as new owner of the Corner Shop.
UGH! Mowed the grass this afternoon and I'm shattered. Off to kip with a mug of tea and a handful of Jaffa Cakes. Leaving you with a favourite photo of Vera Downend and her famous boat from
#Crossroads
. Goodnight, all!
Been rummaging through the inbuilt wardrobe and came across an old book featuring TV stars of many moons ago. Found a Roger Tonge entry. We love his humorous attitude towards
#Crossroads
critics. Bless him!
@archivetvmus71
39 years ago... it made me cry at the time. And I'm crying again. The end of one of Corrie's most brilliant partnerships and Jean Alexander did Stan proud. Wonderful actress.
Meg Richardson/Mortimer (I had trouble adjusting to Mortimer) meets Elsie Tanner! Or rather Noele
#Nolly
Gordon meets Pat Phoenix. The year? 1980. Does anybody know if there are any photographs of these two soap greats together?
#80s
A farewell to
#Crossroads
from TV critic Hilary Kingsley, 1988. Hilary's book, 'Soapbox', was published the same year. Her suggested ending for the show has great appeal for me!
#80s
We watched
#Crossroads
and enjoyed 'dropping in' for 20 minutes, 4 nights a week. The decision to reduce the number of episodes to 3 in 1979 (ordered by the IBA) seems to have been taken and endorsed by people who weren't Crossroads fans. It was thoroughly grotty.
#1970s
Despite not being networked,
#Crossroads
performed amazingly well against
#Corrie
, as this article from Feb 1970 shows. What a shame there aren't more of the Reg Watson episodes in existence. If you love what exists, we think you'd be bowled over by a long strand from Reg's days.
We used to think Coronation Street was so cosy in the
#70s
- despite the mysteries of Annie's living room, the Rovers Select, etc. And the Rovers loo doors leading into Albert's. The Corner Shop with its dingy bell, the Rovers snug - all so snug! But it wasn't really...
#Corrie
Christmas 1979 - and a possible crisis for Larry Grayson's Generation Game as essential documents for the production were stolen from a car. But there was a happy ending - and the show went on!
Lovely pic of some of our
#Crossroads
pals from the
#60s
- the article celebrates 1,000 episodes of the show in 1968, and the show being restored to evenings on most of the ITV network. If only more episodes still existed. Reg Watson was a soap maestro!
One of our all-time
#Crossroads
favourites is Valerie Pollard. The style! The wit! The bitchery! The niceness! The Pussy-Foot Specials at the bar! This 1986 newspaper article covers her brief return. Does anybody have these episodes? We haven't seen them since broadcast!
#80s
Always lovely to see Miss Tatum in
#Crossroads
. We missed her very much after the post office scenario was axed in the mid-
#70s
. This article is from 1978.
We found this yesterday - wonderful Margaret Rutherford inviting us to join her in solving a murder in the 1961 film 'Murder, She Said'. This encouraged us to fetch our Margaret R boxset and watch the film for the first time in years. Fabulous. The magic of Margaret never fades.
As well as playing Meg, Noele Gordon was also the official spokesperson for
#Crossroads
and was absolutely tireless in its defence. Interview from February 1979. A few months later, the IBA announced Crossroads would be cut to three episodes a week - no consultation, nothing.
Our all-time
#Crossroads
fave character was Miss Vera Downend. We adored Meg, Sandy, Jill, Diane, etc, but Vera appealed just a little bit more. In this 1976 article, Zeph Gladstone is back for a stint on the stage, and talking about Vera and the appeal of Crossroads.
#70s
Most of us
#Crossroads
fans have the pic featured here, but here it is featured in some publicity from October 1964. Crossroads, of course, did turn out to be a crossroads in the careers of several of the actors featured! See you next week!
#60s
So, the telly's warmed up, the tea's ready, the bickies are out and we're off down memory lane for the evening. Just to leave you with a newspaper snippet about
#Crossroads
in November 1973. Goodnight all!
Newspaper snippet from May 1968 - Meg Richardson actress, Noele Gordon, was all set to quit the
#Crossroads
serial. There was a happy ending, of course - the issues were sorted and
#Nolly
and Meg stayed.
Summer, 1979: Bad times for us
#Crossroads
fans as the IBA decreed the serial must cut its output to three episodes per week in 1980. WHY? we wondered, cos we loved it. Charles Denton, controller of programmes at
#ATV
, spoke out in defence of the show.
#1970s
It began when I saw a 21st Century episode of
#Neighbours
three years ago, which featured the famous 1987 Mrs Mangel portrait. I was convinced her hair was longer than in the 1980s original. I've finally got round to checking - see for yourself: Mrs Mangel's hair is growing!
@Classicbritcom
Happy birthday to Sooty and co! I used to watch as a kiddie in the days of Harry Corbett. Sweep was my favourite. I still love him.
This photo shows him regretting trying Sooty's new streaming service!
1965 - and one lucky viewer got a walk-on part in
#Crossroads
! I loved the way Crossroads treated its fans. I remember hearing about a guy who visited the studio and had lunch in the canteen with Noele
#Nolly
Gordon, shepherd's pie - and SHE paid!
#60s
Signing off for today. Leaving you with a newspaper snippet. We've all heard of Frankie Goes To Hollywood, but this is Sandy Goes To Paris. It was 1965, and
#Crossroads
was in France with Sandy actor Roger Tonge and co-creator Hazel Adair - who got to play an onscreen role!
#60s
Auditioning for
#Crossroads
- September, 1964. Spot the familiar faces! Not time for Mr Lovejoy yet, but William Avenell is there to take on a smaller, temporary role.
It seems that
@networktweets
has now gone. So sorry to hear this. They brought me much viewing pleasure - including
#Crossroads
, You're Only Young Twice and Adrian Mole. Lots of golden memories relived. Good luck to all concerned with the company.
An interview with Janet Hargreaves,
#Crossroads
Rosemary Hunter, from 1973. Rosemary's reign at the motel culminated in 1980 when she shot ex-husband David in the motel office!
Roger Tonge was great - his wit often made its way into print in newspaper articles. Sandy Richardson was my wife's favourite
#Crossroads
character, and ranked very highly with me. This is from February 1979 - a few months before the IBA announced the axing of the 4th episode.
Meg and Hugh's wedding brings some joy to Birmingham - which was particularly needed, as
#Nolly
pointed out, after the pub bombings of 1974.

Yes! The pay packet stopped in 1987 where I worked and I got my first bank account. It was also the year Barclays issued the first UK debit card and plastic money came home to roost at my front door.
@DorisSpeedFans
Doris absolutely deserved her MBE. Her acting as Annie Walker boosted many people's spirits up and down the nation. No matter how I was feeling, when Doris appeared in the show I always perked up and relished her scenes. She did us a great service.
1973: Sheila is one of our favourite
#Crossroads
memories. She worried us hugely - first there was the married bloke, then she got pregnant by Roy Mollinson... Meg delivered Sheila's baby at the motel. The show was celebrating 2,000 episodes - and ever wider exposure in the UK.
We are delighted to announce the winner of our first
#Corrie
episode most popular female (and in this case absolutely a lady) Poll is Mrs Anne Walker of the Rovers Return Inn. Was there ever any doubt?
Time for another of our "Almost Famous Very Useless" Polls. We're focusing on episode 1 of Coronation Street, broadcast on 9 December, 1960. Which of the following female characters is your favourite?

31 October, 1981: The Five Deaths of Meg Mortimer. Just HOW would Noele
#Nolly
Gordon be written out of
#Crossroads
? A worrying time for all Noele and Meg fans across the nation.
1964: One month in, and here's a review of one of our all-time favourite soaps,
#Crossroads
. It's a great shame that so few Reg Watson-produced episodes exist today.

The Midlands voted
#Crossroads
its favourite TV programme in 1965, as shown by the results of a poll revealed in early 1966. There was no stopping the motel!
#60s
Crossroads, 1967: Headed for Tunisia, several members of the cast, including
#Nolly
, Sue Nicholls and Anthony Morton, stopped off for the night at a real life motel in England.
We always worried about Sheila Harvey in
#Crossroads
, but she was a great favourite of ours. The arrival of her baby at the motel led to some fun behind the scenes moments for dear
#Nolly
in 1973.

Tonight's Telly 4 Us - 2:
#Crossroads
. We loved the original saga in all its eras. No evening is really complete without it. Tonight, the question is posed: Has Valerie Pollard been toying with Councillor Berry?

The arrival of
#Crossroads
!
The space hopper (bounce, bounce, OUCH?!)
Fashion that soaked up puddles when you were out walking.
The Trimphone!
We're going through troubled times at the moment. I won't go into details, but health issues are a big concern and we find turning to old 'friends' from TV fiction a great comfort. Tonight, we're off to see Flora, Cissie, etc, at Paradise Lodge. All thanks to
@networktweets
.
Got our lovely DVD evening lined up:
Crossroads: Iris sets her sights on Kevin.
Sorry, I'm A Stranger Here Myself: Sybil has bought a video recorder.
Coronation Street: Len and Rita's marital crisis.
You're Only Young Twice: Flora has a perm.
Perry Mason: classic 1950s episode.
We were looking at this wonderful photo of the
#Crossroads
studio we downloaded from here some time ago, and clocked the interior of Vera Downend's boat, moored alongside reception - complete with raised wooden flooring. The boat was one of our favourite Crossroads settings.
The Crossroads Motel went BANG in 1967. An old wartime bomb exploded and the next plot twist was a trip to Tunisia for Meg and several of her staff. Rumours abounded about cast changes and just where the Crossroads Motel would be when everybody got back to England.
#60s
Bill Buckley, later a presenter of 'That's Life!' stepped up to support Noele
#Nolly
Gordon when she was axed from
#Crossroads
in 1981. But ATV stated: 'She is definitely going.' Elsewhere, it was a year of riots, Rubik's and royals.
'Pop It In' Pete's sack must be positively bursting with heavenly birthday cards for dear Larry Grayson today. Larry will probably be in bed with a Complan - and his leg up. A very special entertainer, who never fails to make me laugh. 100 years since his birth today. xx
#Crossroads
, January, 1987: undergoing a revamp but also nearing the end - although we didn't know... I enjoyed all the Crossroads I saw. The return of Amy Turtle, the Lancasters, Charlie Mycroft, Mrs Tardebigge and Beverley ('Chloe') and Jason Grice were a delight to me.

Telly tonight!
Crossroads: What is Sam's secret?
You're Only Young Twice: Flora gets a crystal ball.
A Family At War: Jean and Edwin are deeply unhappy.

quiz with Roy Walker and Mr Chips.
Murder, She Said: Fabulous Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple escapade.
After our unhappy encounter with the IBA and its 1979 dictates yesterday, here's a much happier
#Crossroads
memory - Meg (Noele
#Nolly
Gordon) and Hugh (John Bentley) happily engaged in a June 1965 newspaper snippet. And the glorious Motel saga was on FIVE NIGHTS A WEEK!
#60s
@DorisSpeedFans
She stood behind that bar and it was Annie's pub again, although it had undergone a major revamp after the fire storyline. Doris was witty and gracious and Annie lived again. I was delighted.
Woken around 1am by an odd noise. No sign of break-in. Back to bed. Happened again, a long drawn out scraping noise, very close. SHRIEK! Up all night. Sounds continued. Turned out our defunct TV aerial had detached itself from the chimney and was gradually sliding down the roof.
Spring was melodious and bouncy in 1968! The space hopper was released, instantly resulting in races and fun for all (and, as the year went on, an occasional OUCH!) and Sue Nicholls, Marilyn Gates, was on record with
#Crossroads
-featured track 'Where Will You Be'. Happy days!
Imagine being able to meet and chat with stars of the original
#Crossroads
series. Here's an article from one journalist who did just that in March 1973!

@DorisSpeedFans
The coat Doris Speed is wearing was on display at the Granada Studios Tour, and I actually touched it! Imagine that - touching a coat worn by Mrs Walker!
Our favourite photograph of our favourite
#Crossroads
character, Miss Vera Downend, of the barge on King's Oak canal. Despite her racy past, Vera was a true romantic, but Mr Right never arrived. Shame!
On the 100th anniversary of Larry Grayson's birth, here's a lovely newspaper snippet from 1970, with Larry poised on the brink of stardom. Of course, me and Everard were thrilled! ❤️
On our telly tonight: Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). The ghostly happenings with Marty, Jeff and Jeannie make us very happy. Pictured: the 1969 newspaper ad for the show. And the popular channels, BBC1 and ITV are soon to go into colour. BBC2 was there already, of course.

Tonight's telly!
Magic Roundabout: Dylan's dinner party.
Crossroads: The rift between Meg and David grows.
Sykes: A caravan holiday for Eric and Hattie. What could go wrong?
The Beiderbecke Affair: The man wasn't called Jason; the dog was.
The Saint: Roger Moore is Simon Templar.
Our evening's telly line up:
Crossroads: Will Kevin weaken under Iris's advances?
Play Your Cards Right (1980)
Coronation Street: Hilda comes to Annie's rescue.
Emmerdale Farm: Amos sees a UFO.
You're Only Young Twice: The vicar's wife annoys Flora.
Man from UNCLE: 60s spy fun.
Although an avid
#Crossroads
viewer at the time, I don't remember this storyline at all. It seems "nearly everyone in King's Oak" had a motive for Veronica's murder in November 1970. If anyone recalls who did it, please let me know!
@DorisSpeedFans
I'm so sorry to hear this. She was one of the best comedic actresses in my opinion. Her part in the 'Shopping' singalong in Victoria Wood in the '80s is etched on my mind, and her return for the second bout of being Corrie's Eunice had me in stitches. RIP Meg.
1976 - and one newspaper asked some TV stars what they thought of Christmas and what they would like for Christmas - including lovely Zeph Gladstone, Vera Downend of

These

I thought Vera Downend's boat in
#Crossroads
seemed really cosy (apart from the time it sprang a leak) but later I had a boat-living friend who was constantly having trouble with heating and condensation. Zeph Gladstone lived on a barge for a time herself and was not impressed.
Been working on a little collage of my favourite
#Crossroads
characters from the original run. It's not complete (J Henry and Miranda Pollard, Sharon Metcalfe and others are waiting), but who would YOU add?
Tonight's telly...
Crossroads: Decision time for Kate Loring.
Coronation Street: A trip to the tip for the Ogdens.
You're Only Young Twice: Will Cissie marry?
The Man From UNCLE: Nappy & Illya adventure.
Star Trek TNG: Q hurls the Enterprise into a first meeting with the Borg...
