Before the Nolly drama from ITV & the arrival of Boom Radio, there was only really 1 place the Crossroads Motel would get a mention from time to time & that was on Paul's radio show. & the fabulous 50th hour-long special Paul hosted. We're so sad to hear the news.

The Lily Savage Show. Jane Rossington plays 'Vera' in a dramatic recreation of when Buster saved the family from a fire. Stephanie Beacham plays Lily and Zoe Ball is Lily's daughter. Paul O'Grady pops up to tell part of the story as the real Lily.

In the days of 'recorded as live' if an episode ended with a scene you wanted to start the next episode with, you did the scene again. Crossroads did this often, but maybe never quite like this in the fabulous Young Doctors also from Reg Watson. Quite a spot the difference...
We've just heard the awfully sad news about John Challis forever the fabulous Boycie in Only Fools.. but he was very supportive of us in the last few years, as he was with all the programmes he'd appeared in from Crossroads to Corrie and so on. Thanks, John, and RIP.
ITV has commissioned Nolly, a 3-part drama starring BAFTA-winning Helena Bonham Carter as Noele Gordon and written by BAFTA-winning writer Russell T Davies. I know we're just as pleasantly surprised too.
"Noele Gordon was a fascinating, complex, brilliant and gutsy woman" - HBC
David Lawton, our Bernard Booth, is 98 today.. and here he is this afternoon having a birthday tea. With thanks to Cheryl who shared it with us. He also has a story about his very erect chef's hat...
Sad to learn Janice Long has died. We were rather honoured to do a show with her on Crossroads in the 00's on BBC Radio WM. We did another when episode 126 was discovered, and she was just lovely. No sarky questions, no trying to be smart like some interviewers.

Lynda Baron as secretary Phoebe Tompkins, just one of many who had a lust for David Hunter (Ronnie Allen). Sadly he wasn't interested. Meg was even less interested in selling her motel shares to Phoebe too...

Well done to everyone involved in
#Nolly
and The Real Nolly. Whether you enjoyed the drama or not, and thankfully it seems the majority loved it, it has given Noele a return to the spotlight and highlighted maybe just some of the good things the soap did.
Remembering the acting calamity/legend that was dear Ann George, Amy Turtle in Crossroads from 1965 to 1976 and again, briefly, in 1987. Born on this date 120 years ago.

Gretchen Franklin was born on this day in 1911. Played Myrtle Harvey in
#Crossroads
in the 1970s, but is best remembered as Ethel Skinner in
#EastEnders
. In this little clip co-star Pat Coombs talks of when Gretchen was once late to 'Enders studios due to a squirrel...
BBC News report the death of Dick Emery, which includes a lovely impression of Dick as Mandy within the reporting by Jan Leeming who really gives the "You are awful ...but I Like You!" catchphrase her all.
Back to 1976 and Dame Edna arrives at the Beeb. This features her bridesmaid Madge making her television debut. The first Madge is played by Madeline Orr who was in the early 1970s Mrs Bullock in Crossroads.

Blimey someone has uploaded to CAS the
#Crossroads
theme as sung by Carl Wayne at the end of episode 1500. Audio only recorded from Southern TV's screening. Well goes to show things can turn up after over 50 years...
Always love Kathy Staff, every TV show she's interviewed on she absolutely refuses to take any criticism of Crossroads... and a bit of Roland Rat for extra measure.
That's Life! showing how sometimes making TV isn't easy, especially live to tape - where if you make a mistake it's rewind and start from the beginning again...
Meg Mortimer's Guide to the Midlands, lots of lovely things to see including Stratford-upon-Avon, Coventry and beautiful... what?

Happy 80th Birthday to Sue Nicholls best known these days as Audrey Roberts in Coronation Street. Along the way, there was Pipkins, Rentaghost, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin and her first TV job Marilyn Gates in Crossroads...

This week it's 40 years since Roger Tonge died, and we'll remember him over the week. These are some pictures we've scanned in from negatives, so probably most haven't been seen for decades from a mid-70s shoot.
When
@noele_gordon
has to do a whole load of terrible dialogue to get the plot across to the viewer 😂Clearly she couldn't be bothered on this occasion to "haul it out of the grave line by line..." (Because she never did).

The episode after Meg left on the QE2 was wiped by ATV (the last to be wiped) but luckily one of the founders of CAS back in the 80s had it on a videotape... So here is how Jill gives David the bad news, he's not having it all his own way, in episode 3534
#Nolly
#Crossroads
We'll add it here as a video, in the hope maybe someone can clean up the audio & unmuffle Carl's voice? Handy its also to the regular theme as possibly the vocal could be separated from the track & placed on the clearer Hatch theme... But we wouldn't know where to start with that

Sad to see Gwyneth Guthrie who played gossip Mrs Mack, and her more glam sister Florence, in the fabulous STV serial Take the High Road has died. Here she shows off some of Mrs Mack's hats on Pebble Mill..
@HighRoadSTV
Over 700 ATV Crossroads episodes survive, but never before have the closing 'cross road' up/across credits gone left to right... until episode 3525. Mike Holgate (Mr Toothpaste) has directed many episodes so it's not his mistake. Maybe a new cameraman...

An introduction to the faces that'll be popping up on Britbox, done in the style of another hospitality classic that is on the service, Hi - de - Hi...
I blame the Isolation Creations, for these wild ideas 😛
Going through some old video, I couldn't see any DYS? H-D-H other than Kenny Williams singing its praises in Dec 1987. But there is an Open Air from the Wogan set that has a Behind the Scenes report aired in Dec '87. (edited to fit time)

It's sold out... well done to
@networktweets
for this fabulous release. Shame so much of the early days and some of the better stories is lost, but you have to take what you can get - and there is still a lot of great moments...

We've wandered many times into the kitchen with Shughie McFee, but now, for the first time, into the sitting room with Meg Mortimer and she's having to contend with no-show new staff and a regional accent in her sitting room...
#Nolly
#Crossroads
Remembered on his 78th birthday, Roger Tonge who played Sandy from 1964 until his death in 1981.
#Crossroads
It was nice the
#Nolly
drama mentioned Roger.
For years all there was of Meg's exit was the fire/QE2 eps on VHS; it became almost fact that Meg just upped & left. But her displeasure began way before... Here from across late 1981 Meg is bloody annoyed following the death of Sandy & David's disloyalty...
#Crossroads
#Nolly
Accidentally came across this just now on the fan club Facebook page.. 😮We totally forgot about this, so the lovely Network Releasing went and did it, and even used the name that had been suggested (and some of the extras too)
In the sitting room with Meg Mortimer. Poor old Ruby from Upstairs Downstairs is being upstaged by the tray and the coffee pot.

is off Ch5. Looks like Ben Frow Director of Progs has the same attitude Andy Allan at Central had to 'soap'. Both disparaging towards 'soap'. Ben should remember Andy later said axing Crossroads had been his 'biggest mistake' don't throw away loyal audiences...
After all the recent sad news with Carolyn and Janet, happier celebrations as David Lawton, the Crossroads Motel chef Bernard Booth, turned 95 yesterday. Mr Booths Game Bird Jumbo all round.
#Crossroads
Prince Phillip mooching around the Crossroads studio in 1970. Internal ATV notes remark that the royal house had requested the visit, not the other way round, & ATV was 'honoured by this, so soon after Princess Alexandra had opened the studios earlier in the year'.

This scene is possibly our favourite from the whole of the 1980s Crossroads episodes, when Adam Chance turns the bitch tables on Valerie Pollard

Happy birthday to Susan Hanson, (on her official birthday) who became 'Miss Diane' thanks to Archie Gibbs (the late Jack Haig) who called her that long before Benny!
Again thanks to Sheila a bit of TV history, Noele Gordon's final day at ATV in 1981. While there isn't a photo of Noele - her Rolls Royce is parked in the 'overflow parking' (muddy wasteland) rather than her designated parking space! And a fabulous ATV scenery truck up behind.
March 5th 2001 and Crossroads burst back onto ITV. Here's a few faces from the second series. Including Harriet Thorpe, Sherrie Hewson, Neil Grainger, Roger Sloman, Jane Gurnett, Lucy Pargeter and Colin Wells.
#Crossroads
Also Sir David Jason's birthday, alas little of
#Crossroads
survives, only a photo. However, the scripts with Bernie Kilroy shows him to be a chancer, wheeler-dealer type, bit of a geezer. He'll never play a part like that again... 'Au contraire, au contraire'

Happy 36th to Reg Watson's longest-running daily saga, Neighbours. Get the party hats out, Harold and co sing their version of the theme tune...

Speaking of General Hospital, it must be pretty rare that a cast photo card would be used for another soap opera - here ATV at its cheapest using Dr Neville Bywaters's GH photo for Tony Adam's first Crossroads card as Adam Chance

Charmian Abrahams 1927-2024. Best known by her acting name Charmian Eyre. The long-suffering wife of Sid Hooper (Stan Stennett) Mavis in the 1980s.
Sadly Charmain was killed on Monday, January 15th in a traffic incident when the 96-year-old was hit by a delivery van in Harborne.
