It ended with: ‘Please write again.’ I did. And received another reply. And so it went on. For the whole of my time at university, Bella and I would write to each other. Even after I graduated, the correspondence continued. She was absolutely thrilled I’d got into drama school.

We both knew she was talking about my sexuality. I said nothing. She enfolded me in her arms and held me for what seemed like minutes. Then we parted and it was never mentioned again. I still think of that act of perception and kindness to this day. It was like bathing in love.

After the lecture, I popped a stamp on the letter & posted it to the BBC. I’d had a good hit rate with these letters before, receiving replies from Bob Monkhouse, Penelope Keith, Liza Goddard and others. It was always a signed photo, sometimes with a handwritten note on the back.

We played Scrabble and she scandalized my parents by announcing: "An extra 10 points for every rude word!" She was there to write, so we only saw her in the evenings. When she found out I liked to draw, she sent me off with Des to do some sketching and praised the results.

I know now that it’s a massively common experience. Almost every LGBTQ+ person leads a double life until they come out, if they ever do. It becomes second nature. So much so that you don’t realise the huge burden of stress you’re carrying around, until coming out removes it.

I gulped. He said: “Only, you sometimes pretend you’re gay and I wondered whether that was just a double bluff to disarm the bullies.” He had seen right through me. He continued: “You don’t have to answer. I’m just curious.” “Yes,” I faltered. “I’m gay.” He smiled & said: “Cool.”

@NicholasPegg This is the same sequence where no one complained about a time-travelling police box that’s bigger on the inside landing on top of an apple tree and the word ‘gravity’ being changed to ‘mavity’. People are weird.

And the number one thing people - family, friends, colleagues - task you with when you come out is: “How could you lie to me for all these years?” The answer, of course, is that the relentless heteronormative environment we’re brought up in forces LGBTQ+ people to lie.

Oh honestly. Do you REALLY think more people will vote Tory if you jump on the anti-trans bandwagon? No one cares. We’ve all got gender neutral toilets in our homes. It’s no big deal. More worrying is the fact that you Tories seem to associate toilets exclusively with sex.
