RIP My Sweet Luke. May 12, 1998-August 22, 2019. Strongest person I have ever seen. My hero. You may have left this earth, but you will never leave our hearts.
Today we lost a son, a brother, a friend, and a warrior. Have never seen a person battle like Luke Laufenberg, but he lost his fight with cancer. He was truly inspirational. The hole in our hearts will never be filled. You are my hero. RIP my sweet Luke. See you on the other side
We can debate ad nauseam the merits of Jason Garrett’s coaching tenure with the Cowboys. Here is what I know- after working 14–16 hour days, he showed up late at night, unannounced, for the last 3 days of Luke’s life. That is what I know.
It was 98 degrees on July 10. Luke had lifted weights and was working on his routes. I loved coaching him. Receptive to coaching. Two days later, he was told he had 2-8 weeks to live. All he wanted in life was to play football. TY

@UTEPFB
Why are we smiling on a day when Jason Witten retires? Because this tight end was pronounced cancer free today! I can say I have never been more proud of anything in my life than the way
@LukeLaufenberg
battled his ass off. He has shown me what it means to compete.
I took Luke to the Nike store. He had $30 left on a gift card. He found something that was $50. I told him I would pay the difference. He said, “nah, that’s too much money.” He knew he had 2-8 weeks to live. Who thinks like that? I would have bought him the store.

Grateful to all who have asked how they can honor Luke. Being a scholarship football player at
@UTEPAthletics
meant so much to him. In his memory, we are establishing the Luke Laufenberg "FIGHT" Scholarship Fund, which will help deserving students. Details to come.
Had a great coffee convo with Luke at Palace Coffee in Amarillo when I was driving him to Mesa, AZ to begin his football season a few years back. Stopped this morning and got him a cup, just in case he decided to join me

Luke’s Christmas tree. Had it up in his room since he was little and he wanted to leave it lit all night. I think when you are the youngest, you like things to call your own. I put it in his room this year for the first time since he passed. Reminds me of the bright light he was.
Luke would have turned 22 today. This was the card I wrote him for his 21st. Was hoping I was going to get to write him a card for his 22nd, but instead I had to write his eulogy. I will be posting throughout the day to remember him, so block me now- I’ll understand.
Luke was told he was terminal one year ago today. He had so much love and support sent his way from family, friends and coaches. But no one showed up like his brother. (1/2)
My brother Dan has died. He was 1 year older than me. One of the smartest people I knew. Stanford grad. Loyola Law School. But he had his demons and the demons won. I will remember him as the brother I played just about everything with-the kid in these Dan
When you celebrate your child’s first birthday, never occurs to you there may be only 20 remaining. I knew on Luke’s 21st there was a chance he would not see 22. And he didn’t. Toughest man I know, combined with the absolute best sense of humor. Happy B-Day up there, Luke.
When a baby is born, we mark the passage of time in weeks and months. So too, when a young man dies. Tomorrow will be 6 months since Luke passed, and what I wouldn’t give to see him catch one more fish and one more pass

It was one month ago yesterday that our Luke died. Thought about him a lot during the Cowboys' game. He loved playing football. Delivering his eulogy was the hardest speaking engagement of my life. I wanted to honor his memory. Here it is.
As I watch the game tonight, I will think about Luke having fun working on his stance and “very” short sprints while undergoing chemo. All he wanted to do was play football again. That boy was a man.
Before I left Oxnard, I spread Luke’s ashes in the end zone. One of his last places on earth was visiting Cowboys camp. The beach and the football field were his happy spots. So he has ashes at both. And of course, had to spread in the end zone
#LiveLikeLuke
This may be my favorite photo. One year ago today, Luke came to Cowboys camp. Hadn’t told people that he was dying. I got a lot of, “he looks really good.” If they only knew. How the hell do you have this smile on your face when you have 16 days to live?
#LiveLikeLuke
Spent many a day on rivers with Luke & Joe Willie. The best times. Just fished the Frying Pan in CO with JW and spread a few of Luke’s ashes there. Told him we missed him “but I know you are looking down on us, so help us catch a big one” -then landed the biggest trout of my life
Happy Birthday to our Luke up there. Would have been 23 today. Faced an unimaginable obstacle and never blinked. Body was ravaged, weight fell from 240 to 150. Built his body back through crazy hard work. I truly think he believed he could outwork cancer-almost did
#LiveLikeLuke
One year ago today we gathered in 8 X 12 patient exam room, Luke was sitting on the examine table, & doctor came in to tell him it was over. T-cell transfusion hadn’t worked. We were out of options. 2-8 weeks to live-at 21 years old. It was the worst day of my life
#LiveLikeLuke
Enjoy your thanksgiving with family- the future doesn’t promise you the next one. This was the last one we got to spend with our Luke, in 2018. Had battled back from a rare and aggressive cancer. But it decided to make a return visit. At least he saw a win that day
#LiveLikeLuke
I refuse to say, “Luke lost his battle with cancer.” Winners don’t lose. Just like it happens in football games, he just ran out of time.
#LiveLikeLuke
On what would have been his 22nd birthday, remembering Luke’s “FIGHT” and determination. After body was ravaged by cancer and he dropped to 150 pounds, pushed himself beyond what I thought possible. 8 months later, he was ready for D-1 football
@UTEPFB
@CoachKeithBurns
knows
3 weeks left to live and Luke tried to squeeze out every minute. He was in bad pain, but didn’t stop him from two of his passions- catching the football and fishing- while at his favorite beach (San Clemente) And always a smile on his face. No idea how he did it.

Thank you to everyone who has sent thoughts and prayers for my
@LukeLaufenberg
-He is battling his ass off. In a tough fight. And at this moment, I am also thinking about EVERY kid and EVERY family in every corner of the world having their own battles. God bless.
Can’t thank
@UTEPFB
@UTEPAthletics
enough for honoring my Luke. Then honored him again by winning the game. UTEP football coaches and players, and the beautiful people of the city of El Paso, will always be in my families hearts.
For all the people I have heard say they can’t work out because their gym is closed-take a page out of Luke’s playbook. While immune system was compromised due to chemo and was not allowed out, he found a way to get the job done.

.Like.Luke.
Myles Garrett with my Luke at his draft party. Luke was a freshman and teammate at A&M, and had to block Garrett as a scout team TE. Myles could not have been kinder to him. Intelligent, thoughtful young man who made a very bad split second decision. That is all.
I hope everyone appreciates what Zeke Elliott did for the Cowboys. Smart player, tough, team guy. But it was time. And if not suspended for 6 games in 2017, would have led NFL in rushing his first 3 years in the league. Only two players have done that- Jim Brown and Earl Campbell
Check out Cowboys’ left guard Tyler Smith on The Great Fred Warner. You don’t see this kind of athleticism often with an O-lineman. (Apologies to that “other” 73, Larry Allen. The best I have seen, BTW)
It was July 9, 5 years ago today, that I threw passes to Luke. 100 degrees-wanted to work on his routes. 3 days later, went into an exam room to find out he had 2-8 weeks to live. Tumors had taken over his body. How he worked so hard on this day, I will never know
#LiveLikeLuke
Kind of an unwritten rule that we don’t bring people to the QB meeting. But when Roger Staubach wants in, well…rules are meant to be broken. Serious upgrade to the group and Jason and I are now fighting over the practice squad spot.
I always had Luke’s friends over for draft party. They want it to continue. So it does. 18 pounds of wings went down the collective pie holes. As they have gotten older, soft drinks have been replaced by “8 Beer” and

cups. Luke is gone, but he was with us in spirit.
5 years ago today, we walked into an exam room and were told Luke had 2-8 weeks to live. His head just dropped as he sat on the exam table. “How will I die?” In a long line of bad days, it was the worst. If you have lost a child, 5 years might as well be 5 days. We miss you, Luke
Last year I knew it was a possibility that this would be the last Fathers Day card I would ever get from Luke. Unfortunately, I was right. Fortunately, I have kept all my Fathers Day cards. I will celebrate the greatness of Joe Willie today, while remembering Luke.
#LiveLikeLuke
No game ball for me-I did not deserve one-but thank you. Most difficult game I have ever done. My heart was both heavy and broken. My Luke was always on my mind. He always will be.
I planted this tree in my front yard for Luke today. Been waiting for the right time. It is an evergreen, just like the smile on his face was ever-present. I will look at it every day and think of Luke smiling down at his tree. And the tree will smile back.

"Someday soon, we all will be together. If the fates allow." Our last Christmas with Luke. He was cancer free at the time. Thought we had him back. Don't take for granted you will be celebrating with your loved ones next year. Love them this year
#LiveLikeLuke
Remembering Luke today on what would have been his 22nd b-day. He was pronounced terminal on July 12. 2-8 weeks to live, with tumors rampant through his body. Videos are weeks away from him dying. I swear I think he thought he could “will” the cancer away. Wanted to play
@UTEPFB
Here is the list of QBs (in the Super Bowl era) who have 40 wins and 15,000 passing yards in their first 4 seasons. Dan Marino. And Dak Prescott. That is your list.
Pat. I love this. Exact same situation. Other than the minor detail that KC had 3 timeouts and Dallas had none. And KC needed a field goal and Dallas a TD. But I mean, other than THAT…exact same scenario. Haha. Stay safe.
Broadcasting Cowboys game tonight and thinking of my Luke. December 26 will always be tough. Doctor put his hand on my shoulder and said, “your son has cancer.” Put Luke in an ambulance and began chemo at a different hospital next day. Who smiles after receiving that news? Luke.

just may be coming. Luke was born in 1998. Would ask me, “daddy, am I ever going to see the Cowboys win a Super Bowl?” Assured him he would. Maybe this year, but he will be watching from the nosebleed seats.
#LiveLikeLuke
We observed the one year anniversary of Luke’s passing on Saturday- with a little passing. The same beach where he spent a few of the last weeks of his life, San Clemente. We spread a few of his remains there per his request. I know he caught every pass I threw
#LiveLikeLuke
Before we start the “yea, but” conversation. As in, “yea, but it was the Rams…” Rams came into today’s game having only allowed 4 TD passes, fewest in the NFL. Dak had 4 today. They also had allowed a passer rating of just 79.0. Dak was at 133.7. Dak was exceptional today.
Scrolling through my photos, no matter what was happening, Luke always had a smile on his face, even when skydiving knowing he was terminal. Help fund the Luke Laufenberg “Fight” scholarship by clicking on the link below- And tell a friend.
@UTEPFB
Can’t disclose where we were, but another QB meeting in the books. Conversations run the gamut. All enlightening and entertaining. Reconnect with your friends out there

Please, please, please. We need to stop referring to to our politicians as “leaders.” They are not. The vast majority are interested in only one thing-getting re-elected. That is it. You wouldn’t want them as a friend. You wouldn’t want them as a parent. They are spineless.
We lost Luke tomorrow, on August 22, 2019 at about 2:30 AM, but I will always remember that the night of August 21, Jason Garrett showed up at 11:00 after a 16 hour day at The Star. This photo was not from that night, but you talk about showing up….Jason showed up

Dropped the ceremonial puck last night
@DallasStars
“Hockey Fights Cancer” in honor of our Luke. Jamie Benn gave me the puck and said, “we’re going to win this one for Luke,” then went out and beat Edmonton 4-1 . The final goal scored by? “Luke” Glendening.

Congratulations to my former coach, Jimmy Johnson. Officially going into the Cowboys Ring of Honor. Unofficially, he was already in. On field pregame today. Congrats!
You remember certain dates- Christmas, your birthday. And you don’t forget the day you walk into an exam room and they tell your 21 year old son he has 2-8 weeks to live. But today was that day. So Luke went and worked out. I think he thought he could outwork cancer
#LiveLikeLuke
Thanks to everyone who has been so kind and supportive after our Luke lost his battle to cancer. Joe Willie and I were honored when
@UTEPFB
honored Luke in opener. If you want to know, “How can I help” click link below. And RETWEET. And TY.
These MNF playoff games have to go. One thing to be “schedule-disadvantaged” during the season. But you just can’t do that when so much is at stake. Cowboys will arrive back from Tampa at 3:30AM Tuesday. If they win, a short work week. Hardest on coaches. Get rid of playoff MNF
When the 22nd rolls around each month, it grabs me & shakes me. It was 18 months ago today but feels like yesterday. These were the last hours of Luke’s short life. His body was now filled with tumors. When he passed, I laid across his chest and told him I was sorry

2 years ago almost to the day, Luke went through a full body scan & was pronounced, “technically cancer free.” Everyone cried but him. He just geared up for his final round of chemo. My sister was with us and cried so hard I thought she was going to need an IV. He deserved better
Everyone will talk about what a great person Sean Lee was, and rightfully so. But let’s not forget, when he was relatively healthy, he was one of the best linebackers in the NFL. Not a good player- a great player.
“Life brings tears, smiles and memories. The tears dry, the smiles fade, but the memories last forever.” Two great people here. And then there is me...
Cowboys will have a difficult (but not hard) decision to make on Zeke Elliott. But compare his numbers 7 years in to Terrell Davis’ numbers. (Davis played 7 years.) Zeke- 80 TDs, 8,262 rush yards, 305 receptions. Davis- 65 TDs, 7,607 yards, 169 receptions. Davis is in HOF.
Spread some of Luke’s ashes at this spot this morning. Recovering from first cancer bout, and running at 9,000 foot elevation, getting ready to hopefully play football again. No such thing as “vacation.”

Do you ever hear Zack Martin complain about the officiating? Maybe that is because the next holding call on the 7 time Pro Bowler…will be his first of the year.
So Cowboys’ OC Kellen Moore is gone. Some people are happy. But people don’t realize what a good job he did. Look at the numbers. With middle of the road talent. He was good. Trust me. You will find out. Should be snatched up by an NFL team. Chargers would be perfect
A year ago today, Luke got out of the hospital and we went to
@SpacelandDallas
. Had to wrap 5” foam over his tumors. But he was going “He’s one of those who knows that life is just a leap of faith. Spread your arms and hold your breath, and always trust your cape.”

As we all know by now, today is 2/22/22. Luke was going to wear number 2. Luke passed on August 22. So yea, thinking about him a little extra today

My final Father’s Day card from Luke. Two months later, he was gone. I personally think my nursing skills left a little to be desired, (I *was* however, a good coach!) as all I really did was show up. But if he thought I was a good nurse, then…

Met Jacob when he was in the same hospital as our Luke, both battling cancer. Sadly, Jacob has now left us, as well. A piece of my heart goes with him. As Sean Payton told me, “children go immediately to heaven.” Luke is there and I promise he will take good care of Jacob
#RIP
Happy Birthday to Luke. Would have been 26 today. Knew on his 21st we may not get a chance to celebrate number 22. You ask yourself how can there be 8 billion people on the planet and one less rips your heart out? Luke, you were such a healthy eater but have some cake today
Today is “one of those days.” July 12. Full body CAT scan and walked into a small exam room where doctor told Luke, treatment had failed and he had “2-8 weeks to live.” All these photos came after he learned he had weeks to live. We should all have these smiles
#LiveLikeLuke
Remember the kindness on opening day of
@Rangers
GM Jon Daniels. Luke had the option of palliative care after relapse. Had 24 hours, & when doctor came n to get his decision, he said, “if I am going down, I am going down swinging.” Told Jon the story and this bat arrived
1 year ago today Luke was told he was terminal. 2-8 weeks to live. Worst day of my life. I was numb. He came home and said, “I want everything to be the same.” He was a hard working kid and I think he thought he would work the cancer out of his body.
#LiveLikeLuke
Met up with a great group of Luke’s friends for coffee and reminiscing at Foxtrot. And it “wasn’t the coffee we were after.” We all sported our “Luke”

shirts.And Luke, they told some stories on you I did not know about, so you are in trouble next time I see you!
