🧵My book, God Love the Autistic Mind is coming out tomorrow with
@PBMPublishing
.
I hope it helps a lot of autistics and those who love us.
Here's how to order it (print or digital).
This will be a thread of reviews or comments for anyone interested. 1/
As an autistic person in the Charlotte area, I find this deeply offensive.
I wrote about how prenatal autism diagnosis could lead to aborting kids b/c autistic (link below): pro-life people generally supported me while many disability rights people didn't.
Whatever your opinion on
@GretaThunberg
's ideas, please don't attack her for being autistic. It just makes you look like a jerk & makes other autistics fearful of talking about their struggles.
When haters go after your looks and differences, it means they have nowhere left to go. And then you know you’re winning!
I have Aspergers and that means I’m sometimes a bit different from the norm. And - given the right circumstances- being different is a superpower.

Don't be this guy who is showing both his ignorance about what autism means, his ableism with the R-word etc., & his lack of Christian charity throughout.
Or even better, use old cry rooms as sensory friendly places for those with sensory issues: low light, low volume on the speakers, etc. make it so many more autistics can attend Mass.
Please say a prayer for Jean Vanier who went into hospice care. He's the 90-year-old founder of L’Arche Community which helps the disabled live lives of dignity in community.
@blackvoicesamp
Yikes. I get those for random Charities at stores but I haven't seen Autism Speaks. I grabbed some Taco Bell & when they suggested a that I round up my order to the nearest dollar, I wanted more to give it as a tip to the minimum wage worker than the "Taco Bell Foundation"
So, this morning, I signed this. Now, I have to write the rest of "God Looks on the Autistic Mind with Love" - a book on Christian prayer for autistics & our families.
I celebrated a Mass for the Deaf today (with an interpreter as I can't really sign).
When I was there, it made me think that a Deaf Mass might be a great place for anyone who gets sensory overload at Mass.
Please pray for a situation where a non-verbal autistic child is not getting 1st Communion.
(It's on a FB post. I want to see if I can help intervene before I call out the pastor as the post does [ignorance is different from malice].)
My video on this:
Implying I'm autistic due vaccines is not only completely false, but also damages so many people and is uncharitable to both autistics & those who get infected because people don't vaccinate based on this untruth.
This is extreme ableism: let's test for disabilities in the womb & abort any disabled babies.
This is one example why disability rights groups & pro-life groups should collaborate.

movement foundational principle: human life is intrinsically valuable, not due to abilities or traits.

Why don't these 2 work together more?
You can’t screen for Down syndrome before about 10 weeks, and something like 80% of Down syndrome fetuses are aborted. If red states ban abortion, we could see a world where they have five times as many children with Down syndrome, and similar numbers for other disabilities.
We in the Church seem to be reaching out to many different subgroups in society, which is good... yet, so far there is almost no outreach to autistics even though we are 1.5-2% of the population.
We need to change this.
A non-autistic person telling an autistic person how to refer to ourselves when a strong majority of autistic people prefer that to "with autism."
(Yes, "with disabilities" is often preferred for other disabilities, but not autism.)
In unfortunately unsurprising news, the Netherlands is euthanizing autistic & intellectually delayed people a lot.😥 Every life is worth living & we need to make society so these people (us) can live full lives.
The story about the disabled man who was starved to death when he had COVID is finally getting out beyond pro-life & disabled communities.👏👏👏
I hope this leads to change in how we treat the disabled.
“He was given a prescription drug to deal with the anxiety and was experiencing some of the extreme negative side effects of this drug... I do not believe Father Harkins was in possession of a sound mind when he died earlier this week.” Pray for his soul.
FYI: DMing me your amazing chelation supplement at will "cure" autism is not appreciated.
1. I never asked to be cured.
2. Chelation is a dangerous & unproven treatment.

Actually, I did more than entertain them. I explored them extensively a few years ago after I was diagnosed & found that the evidence was absolutely overwhelming & well beyond reasonable doubt that vaccines do not cause autism. 1/2
So, I've been plowing through the book on autistic prayer. I should have a complete draft done by early July, although I known I'll need to go through at least two rounds of edits myself, plus review by another priest in the Legion & by editors at
@PBMPublishing
.
If we are autistic, we should expect Jesus to communicate with us in an autistic way; just like he communicates to us in English but people elsewhere in Chinese or Spanish.
Can anyone explain why birthdays are such a big deal? As a kid, I liked the presents, but as an adult, I don't see a reason to celebrate mine, & I only celebrate others as it's obvious that they like that & I like to make them happy.
#AskingAutistics
Pray for this young man who entered the Legion with me in 2001 & well finally be ordained next weekend. (LC formation is a little longer, but usually 12-14 years, not 21 years.)

I'm watching *The Bee Movie* for the 1st time.
The Bee is drinking coffee as if it has the same effect on insects.
Caffeine is a natural insecticide!!!
The problem of watching movies as an autistic: remembering tons of trivia & thinking literally.
Unlike many

individuals, eye contact isn't painful for me but if I do it, I'm putting in effort to be polite for your sake, not my own.
Politeness is a two way street: I'm make this effort sometimes, but hope you can make a similar effort to understand me.
Then, sitting in front of my computer last Tuesday morning with the posts cued on Twitter & Facebook, I got a little nervous. I didn't know what would come next but I knew there was no turning back if I clicked.
Your response has helped confirm this path. Thank you! 2/2
If you find a particular prayer helpful, pray it.
BUT please don't insist every Catholic / Christian needs to pray it.
Beyond Sunday Mass, God does not require any particular prayers & we should not impose unnecessary burdens.
"More & more handicapped children are being aborted in the womb," so serving those with special needs is an important ministry in the Church. -Fr. Robert Pasley
I just ordered an exact replica of the shoes I'm wearing before my current shoes are worn out because they were on sale (I have a price drop alert on them).
Is this being an adult or being autistic & liking sameness?
Why do some parents consider an autism diagnosis a "death sentence"? It is tough at first but ultimately it often helps an autistic figure out this confusing world.
This is unacceptable for Catholic events. It's a shame when we Catholics have a special call to help the less fortunate yet most secular events accommodate the disabled better than a major Catholic event.
My first new profile pic here in a few years & my first profile picture here with my face. I cropped this one that one of the

did for me.
Every time I repeat "Alleluia" this week, I'll leave people wondering if it is a vocal stim or I'm just excited about the resurrection.

To say disabled children don’t need the sacraments because they are “God’ special children is objectionable from both a psychological and a spiritual perspective. Everyone needs grace and should be offered it. (Cf. Deacon Larry Sutton)
In the UK, doctors decided that all the adult autistics in a long-term care should be given do no resuscitate orders: they will be left to die from temporary health issues they could likely could recover from. This is immoral: I explain why below.
We autistics need to be extra careful about burnout. Masking to seem "normal" & other factors make us often far closer to the burnout limit than others. Here's a nice interview on the topic.

Autism awareness only matters if it leads to
#AutismAcceptance
. It doesn't help

people if everyone knows autism exists but have such a caricature of it that they are discriminatory towards us.
OCD is different from ASD as repeated behaviors in OCD don’t generally calm the person but our repeated behaviors generally calm us.
For me, I know I need my spot in the chapel for that regularity and regulation (even though most of the community doesn't have assigned seats).
Never again.
"The plan for so-called 'useless eaters' to be killed came from Nazi theories of eugenics... By the end of the war, an estimated 230,000 people with physical or mental disabilities were murdered in 'T4' & its successor program."

: Do any of you constantly look for patterns with numbers?
For example, I saw 2315 on license plate & noticed you could add one half & multiply the other, with either side. I.e. 2+3=1*5 & 2*3=1+5
“Neurodiversity is the recognition that autism, dyslexia, ADHD are just inborn neurological differences,” Robison said. “Those differences carry with them gift & disability. Society needs the exceptional thinkers that the neurodiversity world produces.”
After overturning Roe, Buck v. Bell should be next for an unjust ruling to overturn. No killing the disabled in the womb & no sterilizing them out of the womb.
“Autism Speaks is the only major medical or mental health nonprofit whose legitimacy is constantly challenged by a large percentage of the people affected by the condition they target.” -

Don't get tricked by blue puzzle pieces.
"Autism is a God-given task; an angelic opportunity for the human soul. For me, it is a blessing and a curse. To be able to speak to God for all your physical life on earth is a true gift." -Michael, a 15-year-old autistic
"The cure for Autism is acceptance. Society can cure Autism. It just needs to open its mind, let go of the fear, let go of the assumptions, let go of rigid constructs, listen, and try to see the world through Autistic eyes."
This is an inspirational story. We need more who are

like this. I hope to be one of the first

priests, but I'm not quite ready yet.
An announcement for
#WorldAutismAwarenessDay
: I am autistic. I am coming forward to help present the Gospel to other autistics & to help Catholic autistics and their families.
A lot of autistics struggle in social situations & wear headphones & ignore people so the whole situation isn't too overwhelming. I find store shopping with headphones less exhausting, for example.

Oh, she once wanted a late night sandwich.
Something tells me that the type of guy she wants will care more that she got a degree at 19 than that she is not super skinny.
Not too long after I was diagnosed in 2016, I knew that someday I had to be open & public about being autistic. I put it off for the right time.
This January, in prayer, I became sure now was the right time. As the day approached, I felt more at peace about it. 1/2
"[Autistics] usually do not have sensory systems that automatically regulate; instead, they must discover how to keep themselves regulated. This is most often accomplished by employing a sensory diet. A sensory diet for [an autistic] is like insulin for [a diabetic]." -Judy Endow
This Orthodox woman makes several key points about autism in the Church that I think apply to most Christians.
1. Secular help is not opposed to spiritual help.
2. See image - I am writing a book to address how we autistics can pray better.
We autistics will keep asking "why?" & won't be satisfied with superficial answers. I think this often leads to atheism if we don't have someone who can give us better answers. We need to help fellow autistics with these answers.
In fact, the only known cause is the opposite: the mother getting rubella during pregnancy slightly increases the risk of autism in the child, so vaccinating against rubella slightly reduces autism.

Just what the fuck are you doing? (excuse the French)
What do you all think of this chart summarizing autism for NTs?
#AskingAutistics
It's from a book by Larry Sutton (psychologist & deacon) on ministering to autistic children & teens. (I would rework it to avoid "functioning", but otherwise think it's pretty good.)
