My cousin-in-law died from COVID today. She wasn’t vaccinated. Why? I don’t know. What I do know, though, is that her 12 y/o son will now grow up without his mom. Get vaccinated. The end.
I wouldn’t normally post something like this, but I woke up to this unsolicited DM about my body this morning. Anyone who follows this person might want to reconsider. He is anything but a feminist, and I worry about the students that he claims to put first.
I’m sure many academics can relate to this conversation I had with my mom.
Mom: Do you have a lot of work tomorrow?
Me: I always have a lot of work.

Last night during class I may have let it slip that I’m just barely keeping my head above water these days. After class, I received this email from a student. I needed this more than the student knows.
If someone is doing something good right now, let them know.
Wow, just wow! I received 65 college t-shirts from 30 different faculty and students across 17 different states! The 3rd graders at Mark Twain Elementary are going to be representing amazing universities on their College and Career Day! Thank you so much to everyone who donated!
I recently had an article rejected from one of my favorite journals. The reviewers’ and editors’ constructive feedback have been so helpful in revising the manuscript. The manuscript tells the story much better now. Look forward to resubmitting soon!

My first ever solo-authored manuscript--Should all violent offenders be treated equally? Perceptions of punishment and rehabilitation for violent offenders with varying attributes--is officially published online! Snag one of 50 free copies below:
Wow. The response has been overwhelming.
To everyone who has liked, retweeted, commented, and reached out--I thank you.
To everyone who has shared their similar experiences with this person--I am sorry.
To my network of strong and resilient women--we will not be silenced.
I'm super excited about my fall Capital Punishment class. I've secured three guest speakers: the Palm Beach County Public Defender, a trial consultant and mitigation specialist for capital cases, and a Florida death row exoneree. These students have no idea how lucky they are.
I received a lot of nice birthday presents this week. Like a new president and a new iPhone. But nothing tops this one...Cookie (now named Sophie) is officially part of the Atkin-Plunk family.

In January, I will begin serving as the interim Associate Dean for the FAU College of Social Work and Criminal Justice (
@fausocialworkcj
). Here goes nothing!
I now have over 2,000 followers! Because of a tweet. About fonts.
To all my new followers, thank you for being here. You will see lots of dog posts, with some academic and criminal justice stuff sprinkled in.
Well hello there grant award 😊 Super proud of my community partners for being awarded a Second Chance Act grant to enhance reentry services in Palm Beach County! Thankful to be the evaluation partner on this new project!

While walking around Old Town Alexandria, VA on Friday, I found out I won the FAU University Faculty Service Award due to my notable service to our local and regional community, particularly as it relates to the

! I still can’t believe it!
Some professional and personal news…
Professional: On Monday l will begin as Interim Director for FAU’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
Personal: We got a new foster dog yesterday!
Who wants to be on my No Committee? The only requirement is that you tell me to say no when others ask me to participant in projects/service/etc. that I clearly have no time for. I approve for it to be a line on your CV.
Dear Mr Journal Editor:
Miss Atkin-Plunk is unavailable to review the requested manuscript. Please let me know, however, if you would like Dr. Atkin-Plunk to review it instead.
Sincerely,

The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at FAU will be hiring an assistant professor to begin Fall 2022. I'm happy to chat with anyone who might be interested.
I just submitted a 103-page final report to BJA and Palm Beach County Public Safety Department on an evaluation of their transitional employment programs for returning residents. I'm quite proud of how it turned out, so I'm happy to send the report to anyone who wants to read it.
Y’all,
@vaughncrichlow
and I just submitted our P&T portfolios! Hopefully, this time next year, we’ll be associate professors with tenure! I could not have made it through these last 5 years without him by me every step of the way.

Yesterday I was presented with the

2023 University Faculty Service award! It’s really nice when hard work is recognized. Thank you to everyone who made this possible!
To all the amazing faculty and students who donated university t-shirts, THANK YOU!! The 3rd graders felt so special on their college and career day.

Woke up to an email from a community partner telling me and
@vaughncrichlow
that our evaluation report was the best she had ever received in her 18 years of working with evaluators. Talk about a compliment.
As the country is experiencing disgustingly cold weather, let me remind everyone that we are hiring a Director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice and an Associate Dean for the College of Social Work and Criminal Justice. It’s 75 degrees in Boca Raton today.
Nothing like the university telling us to “Protect our owl family,” yet having no mask or vaccine mandate and having fully in person classes with no social distancing and no virtual option.
I’m looking for some nonfiction book recommendations that aren’t criminal justice related. I just read Erik Larson’s Devil in the White City and am finishing up Dave Grohl’s Storyteller. Open to various genres so long as it’s nonfiction.
Good vibes needed. Last night we took our precious

to the emergency vet. She’s still there and will be for the next few days. Please keep her in your thoughts.

Our new foster pup, Clint, has arrived. He’s 10 years old and from a breeder in Alabama, where he lived outside his whole life 😢 He’s shy and unsure of everything right now, but we’ll get him loving life soon.

Dear undergrads, grad students, assistant professors, associate professors, full professors, emeritus professors, etc.,
Please do NOT “reply all,” unless absolutely necessary. Especially on a Friday night.
Sincerely,
A perpetually annoyed faculty 😑
