Rigging it makes no difference: the moral victory is overwhelming. Not a soul will believe Salman Akram Raja lost to that glorified sugar cartel, nor that Dr. Yasmin’s results make numerical sense. Best for the riggers to let go, and for civilian elected reps to come together.

On one side was the deep state, absurd verdicts from the courts, relentless police brutality, the re-laundered class of 1985, and their boomer cheerleaders in the press. On the other was some kid voting for baingan. Piece today, on the big upset:

Moving ahead, it may be best not to dismiss the average voter as jahil, young voters as misled, overseas Pakistanis as disconnected, and the middle class as fascist, just because they might vote differently from you. Democracies work by encouraging voters, not shutting them out.

As a successful lawyer, Salman Akram Raja could've easily been another quiet onlooker. Instead he participated: against rigging as far back as the Asghar Khan case; or raising his voice for victims where only fear prevailed. He did it for all of us. Please raise your voice now.

The ECP shuttering the polls is violative of the Constitution, a mockery of the law, and contemptuous of the Supreme Court. It’s also destructive for democracy. This goes beyond voting preferences now: the principle – of the freedom to elect one’s representatives – is at stake.

This is a clownish attempt – in the same vein as Israel’s Netanyahu – to declaw the one institution standing in the way of the Constitution’s violation. It can’t be done through ordinary legislation, and it attacks the independence of the judiciary.

The Chaudhrys – both of them – have always meant bad news for Punjab. Siding with N or PTI doesn’t change that. As far as the Constitution is concerned, Article 63A is clear: votes are cast per the parliamentary party’s direction, not what the party head/Shujaat says.

Between Wana, Bannu, Khuzdar, Peshawar, Swat, and North Waziristan, there can be no more doubt that the war has returned. What needs asking is, what kind of state keeps appeasing its killers, welcoming them back in, and restarting the whole cycle – after already losing so much?

Leaving the 'angry young Moslem' trope aside, Nabila Rehman's grandmother wasn't dangerous when she was picking vegetables. The Taysi family's wedding party in Yemen wasn't filled with hate. And the innocent children Obama revenge-bombed in Datta Khel weren't his to save.

Madeleine Albright was an unremarkable, dead-eyed war criminal. She spent the most important part of her life starving millions of Iraqi children, while keeping the UN far away from the Rwandan genocide. Any tears should be shed for her victims.

If the Supreme Court really does want to affirm democracy, it would be best to just affirm democracy: elections in 90 days – rather than uphold laws born to sidestep them. Piece today, on this bogus procedure act:

The Queen oversaw an empire that gave us Clives, Curzons, and O'Dwyers. Who can forget the stomachs of native servants exploding across Pakistan because the masters were fond of the booted kick? Mourning her a day after Jinnah is an insult to freedom.

Hazaras are killed because they are Shia. We know because their killers say so. To say they are all ‘Pakistani citizens’ and that we are all Pakistani citizens, is not a call to action. It is a brainless bumper sticker. Today’s piece.

Shahrukh Jatoi, Raymond Davis, Majeed Achakzai, Kashmala's son – none of them walked the first day. Practically all of this country's killers wait for the outrage to subside, and then buy a blood pardon by force – which is, was, and always will be the core problem.

Things that wouldn't have happened without Don Rumsfeld: 1. ISIS 2. Aspartame 3. Shock-and-awe: invasion premised on mass murder 4. Torture as formal policy 5. War crimes as mindless bureaucratese (unknown knowns) 6. Dick Cheney May all the families he destroyed rest in peace.

A journalist’s job is to comfort the afflicted, and critique the powerful. Years from now, Barkha Dutt’s work will be taught as an example of getting it the exact way round: comforting a mass-murdering occupier, and afflicting the terrified women and children of Kashmir.

Native informant cavalry in high gear, defending country of employment against country of birth with great valour. Previous rhetorical victories include ‘collateral damage’ (drones killing kids), ‘global leadership’ (empire), and ‘ensuring a peaceful transition’ (forever wars).
