Last year, Newham Council voted unanimously in favour of a ban on live facial recognition surveillance in our East London borough. The Metropolitan Police deciding to ignore this and deploy it here anyway, completely flies in the face of the principle of "policing by consent".

Full letter is here & worth reading. Cancel culture is itself poorly defined and to "cancel" someone means different things to different people. Most would agree that nobody should be sacked or punished for an honest mistake or a difference in opinion.

I'm glad to have joined the #ucuRISING picket this morning. The University of East London is a jewel of Newham, but with overworked & underpaid teaching staff, it is going to struggle to provide the top quality education that students deserve & that lecturers want to provide.

Dismantle the slaver statues and throw them in the river (or a museum). I don't mean to be facetious, but no one is going to scan a QR code on a statue. Slaver statues aren't there for education but for the glorification of the individual.

Could there be a tech solution here? Rather than dismantling statues, or arguing over the text for a tiny plaque why not use AR for deeper historical explanation. Use QR code or 'statue recognition' to understand the person you are looking at. Tech/historians collaboration?

@krishgm Yeah I get that. I'm also not a fan of BAME so I tend to use PoC. I think it's useful however to have a term for non-white people for collective organising. Otherwise we could levy the same 'lumping together' criticism against terms like 'men' & 'women' but they're still useful.

In case there was any doubt, I am very much in favour of people from Bangladesh or anywhere else coming to the build their lives in the UK. The UK being a nation made up of global communities and cultures is literally our USP - we shouldn't forget it. 🇬🇧🇧🇩

As a result, the Council is now officially opposed to the police's use of live facial recognition surveillance across Newham. In addition to being unethical (and potentially unlawful), it's continued use in our borough will now also be against the will of the local authority. 2/

Racism is alive and well in Britain. It's now cool & trendy to be a racist. Studies demonstrating racism in employment, the police, and in education can be ignored because of a survey saying we're less racist than Poland. Highlighting white privilege is the *real* racism. Smh.

In the Metaverse, anonymous avatars will show up to virtual rallies and be digitally violent towards politicians. In the real world this will ignite a debate on whether Metaharm should be made illegal. Some will argue that Metaspeech is free speech. Others will call for MetaID.
