Critiquing White Fragility via ten supplemental takes: so-called white people are complex & varied; honor the survival brain; simple victim/perpetrator stories are misleading; different strokes for different folks; people need positive visions & stories
@julianzelizer
@realDonaldTrump
And: Arguing that impeachment will divide country and give talking points to GOP ignores one thing: no matter what Dems do, GOP will make same accusations against Dems. Their messaging is a pure autoresponde
@maggieNYT
This exchange is proof enough that Kavanaugh is lying, dissembling, avoiding, and painfully uncomfortable with any suggestion he used to black out.
@tribelaw
Great framing. I’d add: The evil genius framing of GOP is to frame impeachment of Mr Trump as a radical and emotional act aimed at revenge. It’s actually a conservative and sober act aimed at preserving our democracy. Why don’t Dems use this language?
Many black-identified Americans reject the victim label. As a white-identified American, I say "no" to the rescuer role. There is no one for me to save, but there is a story of Black American resilience to honor.

My take: political journalists are often liberals who are terrified of being called out as such, so they’re like little league coaches who are hardest on their own kids. Gotta prove they don’t play favorites—but then do in the opposite direction
@brianbeutler
@ChrisCoons
Flake, Murkowski et al could go back to Grassley/McConnell and say "We weren't clear enough. This plan won't work for us. We need you to__". This requires (a) the current plan truly doesn't satisfy them and (b) they have the courage and personal power to do this
@brianbeutler
Starting impeachment hearings is an act of constitutional prudence. Why not frame it as such? Hearings are like dropping lifeboats into the water to save American democracy. The vote on articles is liking putting those lifeboats to use.
@jayrosen_nyu
Agreed on the train wreck, and let's also acknowledge, as I'm sure you'd agree, that this reporter knew her stuff and allowed no wiggle room. She was great
@tribelaw
Yes, and it’s not because Burke is a one of a kind. There are literally hundreds (thousands) of attorneys who would produce better results in this setting than even the best member of Congress.
@tribelaw
Dems are at risk of breaking Timothy Snyder’s first rule for battling tyranny: Don’t Obey In Advance. Let’s see impeachment hearings start in July. That would be nice
@brianbeutler
Why did so many people so quickly think Kavanaugh was guilty? Because right away Kavanaugh neither asked his alibi, Mark Judge, to back up his story live nor requested an FBI investigation.
@bengreenfield
@realDonaldTrump
@JoeBiden
Remembering that nearly everything Mr Trump says is a psychological projection, we’d merely need to know what he regularly uses and not expect it to appear on any Ben Greenfield-approved list
@brianbeutler
Flake, Murkowski et al could go back to Grassley/McConnell and say "We weren't clear enough. This plan won't work for us. We need you to__". This requires (a) the current plan truly doesn't satisfy them and (b) they have the courage and personal power to do this
@brianbeutler
Yes, Jordan just unwittingly gave sober Democrats a reason to start impeachment hearings immediately. If they don't, they will both get pummeled politically and feel cowardly. If they do, they'll both win politically and know that they have a backbone and can use it.
Dems’ fear that impeachment will create backlash ala Clinton in late 90s. But these situations are strikingly different:
1. Clinton’s approval ratings were in high 50s and low 60s before impeachment, 20 points higher than Mr Trump’s
@FreeBlckThought
It's pretty clear he identifies first as a coach. And no wonder—that's what he wakes up and goes to bed thinking about every day. Interesting to hear the journalists try to pull him off this and him say, "No thanks."
@sbkaufman
His focus is indeed singularly focused. The impact of this imbalance is less credibility. The cause? I don't know his particulars but with others it's often a combo of (a) past trauma by one side (b) flow of rewards from the other side
@SethAbramson
Any chance July 1 is a red herring intended to both distract and create a theory that evidence will disprove? Why would K knowingly hand this over?
@robertwrighter
NYT has no obligation whatsoever to immediately report a factual claim by a terrorist group known for lying. Especially one with explosive possibilities. In fact, many journalists would say they have an obligation NOT to report that. Read

Enormously hopeful story from

about a local policy change designed thoughtfully with many interests in mind, introduced gradually, and now creating cleaner air, lighter sounds, and more environmental justice. More of this please!
@jayrosen_nyu
…and then check back in on them. How many journalists have gone back to GOP officials who said ACA would collapse the economy, produce socialism, etc. and asked them “To what extent that has happened?” Follow through!
@tribelaw
Schiff: “So we will have to decide, do we nonetheless go through an impeachment because to do otherwise would signal that somehow this president's conduct is OK?”
This is halfway to decent framing. Why not say “it’s a choice between impeachment hearings or permissiveness.”
@NormEisen
Refusing to directly answer a simple questions about wanting an FBI investigation is pretty damning. Completely making up new definitions of terms like "boot" and "Devil's Triangle" is pretty damning. Acting like an alcoholic cough with a bottle is pretty damning.
@sbkaufman
It's actually ideological consistency. The far left views Jews as members of a fixed category called "oppressor." By definition, oppressors cannot be victims. So when Israelis are massacred, there's no problem. In fact, Israel is responsible.
@brianbeutler
The apple is rotten. It looks bad. It smells bad. It tastes bad. I just got sick after taking a bite. So before I share it with others, I’m going to send it to the FBI to ensure its acidity level is within accepted boundaries.
@MdmeAlbertine
@ewarren
Ditto on “national security risk.” We are facing not only past violations of the Oath but risks every day to national security. Great framing!
@robertwrighter
One could gather a bunch of people and rally for the "Final Solution" thinking it means a peaceful resolution to the conflict. That doesn't means (a) Others accustomed to the usual meaning will hear it that way or (b) It is useful
@DavidCayJ
@ggreenwald
@democracynow
David, as someone who has studied Mr Trump’s business dealings, what do you think of Seth Abramson’s point that Mueller didn’t even render judgment on the main form of collusion: trading business/$ for loosened sanctions?
Greg, Mark and I provide a glimpse of our new offering in the D&I space and riff on the deeper complexities that make this a challenging and fascinating enterprise. Note: we replace the word "equity" with another word. Hmm...what might that be?
@joshtpm
After "...is really unfortunate", Kavauangh leans back and looks up. He absolutely doesn't mean a word he is saying. Total sign of lack of sincerity. Watch the body. It's all in the body.
@SethAbramson
Could it be that the GOP wanted this investigation to distract from the mountain of lies by keeping Dem
Senators complaining about the investigation rather than highlighting the perjury?
@SethAbramson
Great point, but it obscures the very real possibility that impeachment hearings will strengthen, not weaken, Dems politically in 2020 and beyond. Win/win
@jmpalmieri
@WesleyLowery
@ZerlinaMaxwell
Agreed. So many of us are wired to fall for certain male candidates—it’s a habit strengthened over time. We have no body memory of falling for female candidates. It’s all new. But I sense it’s a love that, once it takes, will last longer.

This is my theory too. And she wasn’t his girlfriend. They were going out. It’s plausible he treated her like crap and didn’t know or care she was assaulted

This made me smile (with sadness): "Note that first, this means nothing whatsoever. Note second that if it makes any kind of sense at all, it is as scripture. It sounds like something somewhere between Lost Horizon and The Ten Commandments"
Still waiting for an answer on how cutting off water/electricity/food to 2 million people helps Israel militarily & protects the Israeli public. There may be a case for this, but Israeli leaders haven't made it.
@JohnJHarwood
High quality impeachment hearings could take a good year. That gets us into election season. House can say they'll wait until after election to decide on impeachment. Senate won't even have a chance to weigh in. What's wrong with this proposal?
@_BlackTrash
@JohnRWoodJr
Agreed. I said to Khadija, "You seem very committed to undermining convention. And you are more dangerous—in a good way—than most because you do it with so much love." A delight to be with all three of you!
@paulwaldman1
Yes, but the answer itself was deceptive and nearly every time he was asked about blacking out, he interrupted, got defensive and evaded. Look at his body pull back here

@DavidLBernstein
Right. I just finished Einat Wilf's book The War of Return, which provides ample evidence for the point you make here. Other than the issue of settlements, Palestinians have to want to make their state in West Bank and Gaza, not all of pre 1967 Israel
@ProfDBernstein
Well said. The notion of Israelis as colonizers has in some of these sectors assumed a taken-for-granted status. It's simply part of the (supposed) factual landscape

It’s as if during WWII, the U.S. debated what to do about famine, illness, European economic trade and global peace without being willing to spend more than 5 min talking about Nazi Germany. “Oh, they’re just one of ten pressing issues.”
@joshtpm
Ironically the fires are right now in largely rural counties with presumably many supporters of Mr Trump. So if the idea is to spite liberals, it’s not working so well, tragically for all in harm’s way
@robertwrighter
"Black Lives Matter" is a terrible analogy because its original meaning was, indeed, that black lives ALSO matter. In contrast, the original and most common meaning of "from the river to the sea" was: end of Israel as a state. Let's think a bit more carefully here
@StrangelEdweird
...It seems as though we could make the same point about every ethnical/national culture, e.g. American Jewish, Japanese, Italian, Nigerian. Each has regional variations. Would you ask the same question about these cultures or just Black American culture? Curious to hear...
@SheenaMasonPhD
@zagusto123
@KidSaleen
We had quite a robust discussion of colorblindness and how greatly it differs from what we are advocating for. I hope you all find it valuable.
@StrangelEdweird
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the consistency embedded in your response. It reframes our inquiry from "Black American culture" in particular to culture more broadly.
The level of cruelty in Kari Lake's mocking comment, if it weren't increasingly widespread in today's GOP, would be astonishing. This shift of tone in big pockets of the party is another example of Mr. Trump's continued impact. We need a healthy GOP and healthy conservatism.

Talking points: “This Administration has more corruption and betrayal than we have time to investigate. So we are limiting impeachment hearings to Mr Trump and Mr Barr.” It’s good framing and has the virtue of being true.
If Democrats do nothing and let the Mueller report sit, the party could end up fueling
@realDonaldTrump
's main talking point--that this was all a just a “fake” partisan hit job and there was nothing there. /2
@joshtpm
Any chance this relatively innocent story of throwing a drink was a plant from the White House (who must have known about it) to distract from the far more devastating new revelations about K's advance knowledge of the Ramirez allegation?
Pondering how developmental stages and cultural worldviews would provide extra clarity to a rich conversation now happening, particularly among Jews, about antisemitism, especially how it differs from the right versus the left.

Important and timely piece. It's hard for many to hear because anything implying "slow down" sounds like a refutation of Jewish pain and/or Israeli security. What you do is show how Israel and the Israeli people lose from this death trap
@SoundCrypto
@EricHolthaus
Good clarification. Then you create three separate charts. Either way, if the goal is to influence people, they need to be able to quickly understand a chart
"So much is riding on Judge Kavanaugh's testimony." In a reasonable world, it wouldn't matter. An incredibly credible accusation of sexual assault would be enough to vote No. His testimony would be irrelevant.
@StrangelEdweird
you asked a great question to our New Alliances Retreat panel re the value of speaking about Black American culture in light of regional subcultures—LA, Chicago, Atlanta, etc. I didn't have a chance to respond, so I am wondering...
@EricHolthaus
Vital chart but it is too busy. Too much “chart junk.” Is there a cleaner, more readable version of this? We gotta have top notch graphs to be heard
@fullydavid
Agreed—the clip, in context, is jaw-dropping. It's as if we unearthed a video from 2009 of Mr. Trump describing how he had been bedside at President Obama's birth in Hawaii.
The far left accuses Jews of posing as a vulnerable minority to hide their "whiteness." The far right accuses Jews of posing as "white" to hide their betrayal of the "white race." Two problems: (1) there's no posing—that's just anti-semitism (2) there's no "white" race

I think there is a healthy D&I, not DEI. Once Equity is in the equation, then you get into the dynamics you are describing. But there are good competent people doing healthy D&I. I'm one of them!
@_BlackTrash
Interesting question. Seems a bit like you aren't happy with how you look so you grow a beard and then someone drugs you and shaves it off while you're asleep. Or your house is too small for all the kids so you build a small addition and then an arson burns it down
