Just your regular reminder that community pharmacy is part of primary care. As are dentistry and optometry. Oh and whilst we’re at it all community pharmacists are clinical pharmacists. 😁
@VirtueOfNothing
No history included in this post, no other symptoms noted, no picture of actual rash, no description of advice given, no first hand experience of the situation on either side. Divisive nonsense I’m afraid.
I know three pharmacists who in the last week have decided they are leaving community to work in GP primary care. All IPs and all 10yrs+ qualified. If anyone has any practical ideas as to how to prevent talent drain out of the sector in Wales I’d love to know.
Thought of the day:
#Pharmacist
job titles we should stop using;
“Primary Care pharmacist”
“Clinical pharmacist”
These titles create barriers and give unhelpful or unclear impression to colleagues about roles, capabilities and hierarchy across the profession.
A patient told me they were “going to put my head on a spike” today because the surgery altered the quantity of a medication on their Rx.
Reported to police and all sorted, but just a snapshot of the types of abuse pharmacy staff can face.
Some people are rubbish.
#pharmacy
Today I completed 6 medicine reviews, tested four people for strep throat, provided antibiotics to one who tested positive, helped a dementia patient with medicines management + diagnosed and treated minor ailments from rashes to ear wax and teething troubles
#whatwedoinpharmacy
Busy day in community, 11 Independent prescribing consultations and 7 CAS - great to be able to use my clinical skills and the variety is challenging in a positive way. Service appreciated by patients and local surgeries alike. Community pharmacy making a real difference 🏴
@WelshGasDoc
Have they seen how the NHS works? No way could we achieve a multi sector, multi level coordinated conspiracy to include the media and government. Be lucky if we could agree on a name for the project.
Very proud to be nominated for community pharmacist of the year at this years
#wellawards
held tonight, just a shame I’ll be watching from my living room rather than enjoying it in person 🍾🍷😂
Surgeries continue to be closed and no one bats an eyelid. Pharmacies now actively encouraged to increase opening hours again because the public are getting angsty. Coronavirus is still circulating, workload is still high. 🤷♂️
Very odd dream where we developed a new pharmacy service where you had to pretend to be a duck. Most annoying thing was the reaccreditation process where you had to re learn duck noises every quarter
Had a great day today in terms of service provision and patient interaction today. A well run store, who are on top of their repeats with well trained staff. When you have time to spend with patients community pharmacy is so rewarding.
'General practice is under enormous pressure, so it’s welcome news that patients will be encouraged to get some health services from their local pharmacies.'
@MartinRCGP
Read our statement in full:
Today involved an extra two hours in work to get Rxs done and a 30 mile round trip to another pharmacy to pick up stock for a patient before delivering it back to them. Patients very grateful- makes it worthwhile.
#whatwedoinpharmacy
You can’t make assumptions and sweeping statements about a profession or a way of working based on a few lines in a newspaper article and at the same time talk about evidence based practice.
@GPswampwarrior
4 carefully selected photos of conditions which would be differentiated by history. Let’s remember here that community pharmacists don’t diagnose remotely based on pictures- we see people face to face. Not wanting to argue any further on this, but it’s nonsense, again.
Delighted to have been elected to
@rpharms
Wales National Board. Thank
you to those who took time to participate in the election, and well done to all candidates for putting themselves forward.
Glad to have the opportunity to give back to my profession, hoping I can add value.
9) I am immensely proud of my team and my profession. Pharmacy is seen as an add on by many. This crisis has highlighted how important we are to communities, particularly when GP surgeries close their doors. Without us the NHS cannot function. Be proud, pharmacy.
@arobertwebb
Love the homeopathic a+e sketch, and cheesoid is an all time fave.
Cheesoid would also make a better cabinet minister than any we have now.
Reflecting tonight on my professional positives of past year: gained PGCert, started IP, nominated for C&D award as part of Primary care cluster and won
@wellpharmacy
pharmacist of the year. Not bad for a boy who went to Tonypandy Comp

Hate this sort of misleading headline by
@BBCNews
Using a prescribing service (or PGD) to make a prescription only drug available at a cost to suitable patients in a pharmacy does not equate to “selling” in a “chemist” 🤮
Thoughts of the week; a thread (if anyone cares)
1) without a doubt the last fortnight have been some of the hardest I’ve ever experienced in pharmacy
2) having said that, seeing some people it’s almost as if they’ve never had a really tough time in work before
This week we have two staff members (72 hours worth) self isolating with COVID symptoms. Both still awaiting test results from Sunday.14k item per month pharmacy currently running on a pharmacist and two dispensers. And flu jabs on top. Had a titful.
I think the best thing to come out of COVID is the huge wave of experts in the fields of virology, epidemiology, immunology and public health. Who ever knew there was such untapped potential in the general public.
#WorldPharmacistDay
I’m tired. Tired of minimal recognition and being viewed as retail.
Tired of abusive customers. Tired of queries because people can’t get through to their surgery. Tired of huge workload with reduced staff. Tired of flu and COVID. Just tired. And worse to come
@SimonBruni
Dunkirk was an evacuation where there was no other way out and the troops were pretty much doomed otherwise. And they’re using this as an analogy?
@pulsetoday
Completely unfounded nonsense. Many professionals would be better off looking a little closer to home before throwing accusations at, and making wild sweeping statements about, others.
Fantastic morning in community pharmacy today including 9 Common Ailments, 3 Emergency Medicine supplies and lots of happy patients. Making the most of the opportunities delivered by the Welsh community pharmacy contract.
#communitypharmacy
Everyone has a part to play in making
community pharmacy work.
Some employers may need to improve terms/working environment
Some workers may need to look at what they offer those paying them
There is middle ground and going over the same arguments does nothing to move forward
#WorldPharmacistsDay
The most diverse, indispensable, underrated profession. 24 hours isn’t enough to talk about the great work that pharmacists do in a variety of settings every day of the year. Let’s shout about the profession more, you deserve to have yourselves heard.
Two customers have told me to “fuck off” in the past fortnight - both because I asked if they had a mask 🙄
An “exemption” to wearing a face mask (however dubious) does not mean you have the right to a) be abusive b) hang around the pharmacy potentially spreading COVID
Still can’t quite believe that non patient facing staff in primary care are getting
#CovidVaccine
ahead of community pharmacy staff who have been in patient facing roles throughout the pandemic. Tells you all you need to know about how much we are valued.
@DeanEggitt
But we can’t take on all the workload either, we have our routine work to continue as well and are experiencing the same pressures as general practice with regard to Covid regs, sickness and workload. We need a co-ordinated primary care response to share the workload.
Enjoyed attending the Welsh pharmacy awards last night representing
@CPWales
. Great to see the amazing work being done by pharmacy across Wales and loved catching up with colleagues face to face. Congratulations to all nominees and winners!
#WPA2021
Great to present to
@PDaHW
delivery board this morning the
@cpwales
project on DMRs, and fantastic to see the other amazing project work done by pharmacy colleagues across Wales.

Signs you’re a healthcare professional with a toddler at Christmas time: mince pie in the pulse oximeter (it was a dinosaur and it ate it all up, apparently)
@DirtyPopCardiff
@cardiffcouncil
@SWPCardiff
@WelshGovernment
1) it’s no wonder cases are on the rise. Public need to take responsibility but more action should also be taken against premises who don’t enforce social distancing
2) this illustrates why I have no intention of going out in Cardiff until I’ve had a vaccine
It’s that time of year when our cheese is categorised into “cheese for now” and “Christmas cheese not to be eaten until 24th at the earliest upon pain of death”
@JohnathanLaird
I would also argue that this sort of intervention is fairly routine 🤷♂️
The company I work for once highlighted a pharmacist who “spotted a drug interaction that could have been fatal” 🙄
THATS OUR JOB!
Maybe it’s just me but I find it almost patronising
Started our
#flu
jabs this week. Community pharmacy has a massive role to play in increasing flu vaccination rates in the general population and glad to be doing my bit. Also provided my first pneumococcal vaccine under our new private service.

4) now is not the time for political point scoring. If you are wishing illness on other people you are a horrible person
5) I am proud of how
@CPWales
and
@AndrewEvansCPhO
have responded in Wales. Especially vs what’s happening in England.
Super busy at the moment but so refreshing having new challenges every day. Great to be enjoying work once more after getting into a rut in my previous role. Take a leap- it’s worth it.
@theJeremyVine
This doesn’t help Jeremy, that graph was worst case if we did nothing. There have been measures put into place as you well know in order to prevent that worst case. Poor.
@DrDavidRouse
Pharmacist IP here. As with any clinician you only prescribe within your area of competence. It’s not a free for all, as with any other independent prescriber. There are competencies to achieve prior to qualifying as IP. Course will support this.
Comes in from 2026
@VirtueOfNothing
We can’t expect non clinical surgery staff to do the triage to standard of a healthcare professional.
Let’s support change in systems that could be better instead of trying to throw stones at individuals working within them.
@HospChiefPharm
Appropriately trained prescribers, improving access for patients, reducing pressure on GP and out of hours, following Antimicrobial stewardship and local prescribing guidelines- curious as to why you’d think it’s a bad idea (the poorly written story does no favours)
Another abusive customer today = another person banned from the store. Staff in all healthcare/retail settings do not have to put up with it and those members of the public who think they can dish it out need to learn that it is unacceptable.
#pharmacy
Great to hear feedback from interactions with patients/public and even better when it’s a good news story. Hopefully shows the value of
#communitypharmacists
clinical skills and accessibility that is mirrored in countless places across the country every day
Just had the most fantastic
#pharmacist
story at
#plaid22
from a delegate who attended the spring conference and feels that
@Alrob85
saved her life with his advice to get a lesion checked which was found to be cancerous, she is extremely grateful - well done Aled 👏🏻
6) we are all scared. Myself, my colleagues, GPs, family, friends. This is unknown territory. It’s ok to feel this way. But most of us will be ok. We can only hope the measures we take individually will protect us and those in contact with us
So much more than drugs and pills
We’ll give you help with common ills
Flu vaccination in a flash
Help stop smoking, if you ask
Open and welcoming, come on down
Your local pharmacy team will see you now
