I am SBC by conviction. I love the SBC. I am indebted to the SBC. I am blessed to lead an SBC entity. I am grateful for our SBC heritage. I believe in our SBC future. But I know one thing for sure: God does not need the SBC. God is God. The SBC needs God—not the other way around.

40 years ago, some SBC seminaries had profs who: —Embraced a Bultmannian NT demythology —Denied Jesus’s physical, bodily resurrection —Rejected the OT miraculous events —Advocated pro-abortion positions That’s real liberalism. None of our SBC seminaries have any such profs today.

Friendly reminder: not every doctrinal disputation is a matter of orthodoxy vs. heresy. Not every difference over the interpretation of any particular passage(s) of Scripture is a matter of orthodoxy vs. heresy. So when we talk about “heresy,” let’s be cautious. Labels do matter.

FWIW, affirming biblical inerrancy ≠ agreeing on every debatable issue of biblical interpretation. As a convictional Baptist, I believe any inerrantists who reject credobaptism as the only correct biblical understanding are dead wrong, but I don’t claim they aren’t inerrantists.

Some English Bibles include the line “Words of Christ in Red.” For those of us committed to a high view of Scripture, the red-letter approach must never be used to create a bifurcation in Scripture itself. If ALL Scripture is the Word of God, then ALL of it is the Word of Christ.

Southern Baptists are a confessional people, but the Southern Baptist Convention is not a creedal body. No church must formally adopt the BFM in order to be a “cooperating church.” Here is the relevant language from the SBC Constitution (Article III, 1, (1)). Words matter. #SBC22

What separates Southern from Independent Baptists is the @SBCCP , the 1925 fulfillment of an 1845 vision of “a plan for eliciting, combining, and directing the energies of the denomination for the propagation of the gospel.” Perfect plan, no. But better than the alternatives, yes.

I. Scripture While divinely inspired, we deny the Bible is inerrant or infallible. It was written by men over centuries and thus reflects both God's truth and human sin & prejudice. We affirm that biblical scholarship and critical theory help us discern which messages are God's.
