1st Stockholm to Venice direct train has taken place
State incumbents have had decades to make cross-border services like this happen, delivering only meagre results- system is still fragmented
It took a private initiative by Swedish newspaper DN to show that it can be done
Nu skrivs järnvägshistoria. Det första direktåget Stockhlm-Venedig rullade ut från Stockholm Central i morse. Det som många ser som omöjligt visar sig vara möjligt genom unika personliga insatser.

Night train growth in Europe:
last Autumn, the long distance passenger rail operator Snälltåget acquired additional 10 wagons for international night train traffic, mainly for its Sweden (Stockholm/Malmö) <-> Germany (Berlin) route.
Here's one of the wagons in its new livery
Seems those pesky passengers should not be getting on international trains 👇🫤
Strange though: if incumbent cross-border collaborations are so great, and DB & NS know there will be additional demand, why do they not organise relief trains?
Would that be too customer focused?
This is why we have always called for a Mandatory Missed Connection Protection across all operators 👇
Because when the passenger is not to blame for a delay along the way, (s)he should not have to bear any additional costs, especially when non-refundable tickets are involved
Latvian rail incumbent just operating one train per week to 3rd biggest place in Latvia
Instead of traveling around Europe so often, perhaps the CEO of Latvian Railways should spend more time at home addressing how to achieve modal shift to rail (by the way: we have solutions)

There’s no such thing as an ‘all trains in Europe’ booking engine. 50+ operator systems. Some sites like Loco2 & Trainline & Omio connect to multiple systems. But not all of them. Need to use right site for each route/train/journey.

Deeply disturbing that 26 year old former Eurostar trainsets, financed by public money, are scrapped without even having been put on the market to give them a second life.
Asbestos is a convenient excuse....
Tougher competition should help. Just look at Italy, where upstart NTV joined Trenitalia in offering train services. In just 4 years:
📈Their share of traffic on the Rome to Milan route doubled at the expense of the airlines
📉Ticket prices fell by 30%
State Secretary at German Ministry of Transport says:

There has been no independent review of whether this scrapping is necessary

France has banned flights on routes that trains cover in 2.5 hours
But we should be more ambitious: this should happen on ALL routes (domestic & cross-border) that trains reach in 4 hours or less AND when there are night trains

announces the timetable for its new EU cross-border long distance passenger rail service between Prague and Krakow.
But when will the service begin? -
this depends on attaining permissions from specific rail partners in Poland.
Mamy rozkład dla pociągów Kraków - Katowice - Praga! Termin startu ogłosimy w najbliższych tygodniach - jest uzależniony od uzyskania dopuszczenia w Polsce dla naszych składów.
We're launching a direct train connection between Prague and Wroclaw on 20 December! 🚄 The tickets start at 99 CZK/17 PLN.

We've also revealed more info about our plans to go from Krakow to the Ukrainian border and to Warsaw.

It should be possible for a passenger rail operator to cross internal EU borders on its own, just like buses, trucks and planes do
The incumbent cross-border collaboration model does not work and also keeps the market small - due to inhibting competition:
Interesting how someone posts how there should not be more high speed rail in the UK
