Woah it's been 1 year since I joined
@riotgames
on
@TFT
!
It's also only 1 year for our team in 🇸🇬 but we already had the chance to work on some insanely cool stuff.
More to come VERY soon
Literally today I was in a meeting where everyone agreed we cannot develop a feature we have planned for TFT next year unless we have a dedicated QA Engineer.
Bungie’s leadership has referred to the QA team as “non developers” in a meeting.
Bungie has fired 10% of their internal QA department between early October & early November.

I'd say it like this: if you are part of the development process, you are a developer.
QA in particular is a key part of the development process.
I guess this blew up, which honestly makes me sad.
This should NOT be a topic.
What I said is just the norm in the industry, and a statement from some execs is not going to change that.
@ShePlaysPodcast
Women in games are...
- your next mentor
- your next role model
- your next positive disruptor
Let's not let a small group of idiots make it otherwise
@mikeBithell
University Professor: "Give up on becoming a AAA game programmer. There is no way a company will accept some random foreigner fresh out of university when they can hire locally. Believe me, I've tried."
Sadly, this was enough to convince a few of my colleagues.
@Xbox
@PlayStation
@NintendoAmerica
It's a good time to like video games when big companies have this mindset.
Makes me even hope that one day the biggest issue in gaming will be solved: agreeing on the placement of the X button.
@softndeadly
Nail your traversal early on!
Players are going to spend a lot of time doing that. It also affects many other aspects of design.
Consider gameplay (ie Spiderman's web swinging), narrative (The Witcher's question marks) and art (Assassin's Creed's landmarks)
I asked my thesis advisor for tips/contacts to get in the games industry (he was teaching computer graphics).
Not only did he not help me, he told me it was childish of me to try because even he couldn't make it.
6 months later I was working on AC Origins.

@mikeBithell
Couldn't agree more. University should be about opening your horizons and exploring new possibilities, not constraining yourself to the status quo. Professors that are unable to see that should probably consider a different job.
My inner producer has a sudden need to know how many man-months were saved by not making the lightsaber cut through the meat while holding L1

Hang on, I just realized Skull and Bones released exactly on the day of my 9 year anniversary 🎂since I joined the games industry professionally.
It's 4 shipped games now, and many more precious memories with amazing people.
"Riot hired me because of my values. If Riot fires me I'll still carry those same values with me. I'll still be making games my way" - a trainee on my team.
You may have lost a job or a colleague today, but you haven't lost your values. The world will play your games, your way.
Minutes ago, we shared an important update with Rioters about the future of Riot Games. Here’s what these changes mean for our games and what players can expect from us going forward:
@psergiomr
A great example of silly patents stopping innovation.
I'm sure there are many smart people out there that could take this to new heights but cannot
@CLeituga
Drop me any Portuguese CV and I will check it with extra attention. If a person has reached that far in the Portuguese reality, they're usually absolutely talented and driven, I want to hire them
Again, this is absolutely true - you don't need a degree, and definitely don't need a "videogame" degre.
But!
If you are considering working or moving abroad - a common career path in games, you *will* benefit from a degree for visa, immigration, and travel purposes.
I asked my 2-year-old to be the one putting me to sleep tonight. She did the following:
- "read" me a book about sharing toys
- sang happy birthday 3 times
- hugged me for several minutes
- said "I love you papa"
- whispered "I don't bite papa"
- fell asleep
@710wonderdev
Some advice that helped me in the transition: your success is no longer measured by your individual contributions, but by your team's total contribution. As a leader, your actions can bring a high multiplicative factor.
A good meeting = a high multiplicative factor
Shout out to the
@lufthansa
employee who went out of his way to check if our beagle had boarded safely.
Also because he asked his superior, with a straight face "yes, a beagle, I hear he is very cute and loves kisses".
@TagessonTomas
I don't think this is an industry problem, it's a country problem. It should be part of the labor laws, applicable to all employees and companies.
This is not hard, and it exists. Here is the Bulgarian law, for example:
And we are LIVE!
Super proud of the team here, it's the first event hub developed by us and it's been awesome preparing everything about this event together with everyone else on TFT

Every team lead should read this.
Best case scenario: you burn.
Worst case scenario: you burn your team. Which means you also burn, but more slowly and painfully.
Back in Portugal for a few days, found where my parents kept some of my old stuff and wow I want to stay in this box forever. Look at that original japanese Final Fantasy cartridge for the NES I got on my trip to Japan!
Every time you get upset that your favorite Pokémon didn't make it in Pokémon Sword and Shield, just relax and... WHAT? KRABBY MADE IT BUT NOT MY FAVORITE??

@MarcoValeKaz
As someone who actually worked on games people know, it's overrated! I dream of having a fraction of the creative input you have in your projects. You rock, sir!
This is the first feature my team in Singapore collaborated on that we are shipping since I joined Riot.
We had a lot of fun turning this into reality, and it's true I'm excited as a developer, but I'm even more excited as a player to roll for all the cool content coming soon!
@danahern96
Oof this one hurts. Name 5 times you caught the team going in the completely wrong direction way too late because you missed those meetings
Exciting news!

Noticed this today in Singapore, and I'm wondering why can't this be everywhere? Such a simple thing and it can make a huge difference for people with reduced mobility

@isocpp
@rustlang
I think this is inevitable. What's the alternative? To allow broken features for the next 100, 200, 1000 years? The current model is not scalable - do we seriously expect that we ONLY introduce good features from now on?
Ready to train to the top in Soul Brawl, the new TFT game mode?
Team up with your favorite champions during The Choncc Dome Event and find out where you stand in this best-of-3, tournament-style showdown! Play and earn rewards from July 19 to August 15.
With development cycles growing exponentially (and often ending in cancelations) I feel this is extra relevant.
For me, not shipping anything for a few years left me completely destroyed
Because game dev is considered a passion-required line of work and with all the pressure to perform and to crunch, it's natural and easy to end up considering your line of work the most important thing about yourself--to have it define you as a person.
"The first thing that stuck out when jumping into Skull & Bones’ endgame content was just how advanced the ship buildcrafting can get."
All those years ago, I came to 🇸🇬 to lead the team creating modular ships and their supporting systems. So happy to see IGN praising this.
I was at
@DigiPenNews
Singapore today watching the presentations for the students' final game projects.
So many cool projects in there! I can't wait for you to bring your talents into the industry. See you soon!
It was a good decade:
- wrote my first line of code
- released my first game with friends
- finished university
- got my dream job in AAA
- released my first AAA game
- became a team lead
- started working on a new IP
- worked in 4 different countries
"It's lovely performing in 🇸🇬. I see people with so many different faiths and from so many places sitting next to each other enjoying music. Goes to show that maybe it's not that hard for us to live in peace together across the world", loved this from Chris Martin yesterday
Bittersweet moment: the vet told us he is developing arthritis and we said "we're actually a bit... happy?"
You see, he was diagnosed with cancer and we were told he may have only 3 months to live. That was 2 years ago
Seeing him grow old means he's still with us, it's precious
@DJ_Link
Today I did the classic submit dance - "Finally removed that hack!" followed one hour later by "Reintroduced that hack because I remembered why I needed it. TODO remove hack."
Woah super pumped for doing a talk at
@GCAPConf
!
I'll be speaking about how to setup successful cross-studio game development, which may or may not be possible, who knows? Stay tuned.

Sorry but as a developer and Harry Potter fan I cannot agree with the boycott on Hogwarts Legacy.
It's impacting the wrong people (developers, fans) for the wrong reasons (it's not these people's fault)
@NewSammyChan
@ShePlaysPodcast
Not at all, I understand and agree.
I have a young daughter that I hope will get into gaming one day. I want her to not have to go through such nonsense.
You know when you're taking screenshots of your game and then end up trying to click the screenshot instead of the game window?
No? Me neither, what a stupid thing to do
Which reminds me... we're hiring gameplay programmers for all levels!
Any Portuguese programmer interested?
I managed to hire one last time I tried, just saying...
Today is the first time I have opened Twitter in 2 weeks following the increase in tone in the
#coronavirus
situation here in Singapore.
The amount of negativity, false information and racism going around is absolutely disgusting and it has taken a toll on me
The Golden Globes are weird they're just like... giving out awards and letting people accept them?
Where's the World Premiere trailers for upcoming movies?
Is Hideo Kojima even there???
Today I finished Ruined King and I just love we have dedicated games to explore these characters.
I'm not surprised I had a good laugh with Braum but... do I kinda like Pyke now?
#ericaps4
giving me a chance to play videogames with my wife is a huge thing.
My hat's off to
@flavourworks
, the games industry needs more people like you making games appealing to a wider audience.
@DJ_Link
While this is great to see, I do feel the need to point out that it's leaving out non-Japanese employees for unclear reasons. The economy is bad everywhere. As much as Japanese employees now feel secured, the same can't be said for the rest
In the AAA games industry you can put up your hand and say, yes I will do the thing you need that is not actually my job. But then it will be. Which is how I now have several jobs. Not a complaint - I fucking love responsibility - but be careful what you volunteer for.
Normal people: can't wait to get that new phone to replace a broken one
Me: having anxiety because getting a new phone means I need to be careful with it because it's not broken
Today I finished Ruined King and I just love we have dedicated games to explore these characters.
I'm not surprised I had a good laugh with Braum but... do I kinda like Pyke now?

Where is the UX police when you need it??
This is a dropdown of country codes, sorted alphabetically but you can't even see the country.
You have to GUESS where your country is in the dropdown to find it
@olafurw
I love how this (and variations) is a pretty standard technique today for any game developer. Helps a lot in network code, for example.
Just makes you appreciate how privileged we are for benefiting from so many years of development of OTHER people.
@OutoftheboxP
Ehhh careful, that third one can also be a really bad reason. Please don't turn everything into a visitor just because you read an article about it yesterday
