I❤️transit🚊 But riding in a new city - or even an unfamiliar route in your own city - is nerve wracking. I’m always asking myself when and where I should get off. That's why @vincentmvdm and I built a more comfortable transit navigation experience using @framer .

Adaptability was a big focus for this interface. The display is divided into 3 sections that adapts based on the needs of various riders and what state (arrived, departed, etc) the subway is in. It was built in @framer so it can programmatically sequence through these states.

When my family and I immigrated from Japan, I was 2. In elementary school, I was called a bunch of names like “Yu-Ki-Oh” (from Yu-Gi-Oh) and “Yucky”. In middle school, I was so embarrassed about my parents’ broken English that I avoided talking to them in front of my friends.

Lastly‼️ — if we’re serious about taking cars off the road, we must make riding transit *feel* more comfortable than driving a car. Here in the US, we have a long way to go but hoping I can push the needle a tiny bit further.

In high school, I locked myself in the bathroom to eat my mom’s homemade bento boxes because so many commented about the smell of my food. In class, every time we talked about pearl harbor, classmates would turn towards me and ask “why did you do that?”.

I didn’t know what racism meant back then. All I remember is that there were hell of a lot of days where I wished I wasn’t Japanese. Life looked so much easier if I had parents that spoke fluent english or if I could bring ham sandwiches for lunch.

But this is the country I chose to live in and it’s the weight that I have to carry. What’s crystal clear to me is that I don’t want my kids to ever feel the pain I did growing up. And I sure as hell don’t want kids to fear their lives just because they’re asian immigrants.

⚡️Tap speed Transit cards use Felica technology which has a tap speed of 0.1 seconds. NFC technology (Apple pay) used in cities like NYC/London takes 0.5 seconds. This means that you just walk through without stopping in Tokyo.

And the recent uptick of hate crime makes me feel this way again — “If only if I was white”. I don’t have anything profound to say. It’s just that somedays, it’s really fucking hard being an asian immigrant. I really wish it wasn’t this way.

Did you know that poles can help fill seats on a train? Let’s look at a 6-seater like this. People naturally desire to sit at the edge or near the middle so after those 3 get filled, most would rather just stand.
