I just read online that during WW2 Raffles Institution was renamed Beach Road Boys School & now I think RI boys should be outraged that they were cheated out of being called Beach Boys
@XiranJayZhao
There's a great memoir titled No Other Road to Take by the female revolutionary Nguyen Thi Dinh, who later became Vice President of Vietnam. In this bit she talks about her work w "long-haired troops":
@geshi2samatai
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. My god, what a clusterf*ck.
I oppose pedophilia based on the inability of a child to consent & as co-editor of the book I can say we didn't feature any stories that even mentioned the subject.
@dicklevitating
As a Singaporean gay activist, I don't think comments like this help—they build resentment more than agreement.
Most of these countries got the law while we were colonised by the British—and as my country shows, you really can have development without human rights.
At Springleaf Curry. Old man w improperly worn mask is talking to a table full of ACS boys in tank tops.
Old Man: That was my school too! You know what they used to call us? American C*ck Suckers!
I know she's trying to defend the higher price point of Peranakan food against a non-Peranakan critic who's saying it shouldn't be more expensive than Malay food, but...
... racial elitism from the 1920s is unconvincing & super cringey? 😬
PENANG NONYA FOOD NO EXPENSE IS SPARED ALL ATTENTION MUST BE PAID OR YOUR EXISTENCE IS MEANINGLESS AND YOUR FAMILY'S HONOUR IS QUESTIONABLE.
So fuck off you Chinese pleb. I have krosang, Kebaya, sarong and tali pendent older than your grandparents.
Breaking news: Jee Leong Koh just won the Singapore Literature Prize for English Fiction.
He announced (via his proxy Thow Xin Wei) that he'd donate the money to
@tjc_singapore
for the defence of death row inmates.
(2nd Minister of Law Edwin Tong is attending!)

Has anyone else noticed the strange parallels btw Yale-NUS's dismantling & Nantah? Both daring new ideas for universities (American liberal arts in the 00s vs. a decolonial Sinophone program in the 50s), abandoned by SG once their priorities shifted
I'm at Springleaf Prata next to a table of old army friends in their 60s & suddenly the Malay guy has brought up racism in the SAF & everyone's uncomfy but they're listening 😮
All Pride Month, I've been wanting to do a resource thread on queer Singapore literature! There's a *lot* of it, so I'm gonna start w

about trans people 🏳️⚧️🇸🇬
@imaginmatrix
@AllieGolem
There was also this whole thing of the larger women being more difficult to auction off. (Mind you, if I recall correctly, the women were presented as being kinda into it?)
@neilhimself
I have to admit, reading about Aslan *stripping* Eustace out of his dragon skin was extremely sexually arousing for me as a confused gay preteen
Today, at 3pm, death row inmate Kalwant Singh made a last-minute application for a stay for his execution. A bunch of us turned up to support him—so many that the Court of Appeal maxed out its capacity of 40 seats, so that some of us had to wait outside w the security guards.
[1/4]Singapore has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a fishing village. Today, it is bustling metropolis all thanks to the nation's land use strategy that has evolved over the last 50 years! Click through to read more about these Concept Plans.
In the Court of Appeal for the constitutional challenge by 24 death row prisoners for lack of legal representation. All virtual. They've just appeared on the Zoom screen. They're wishing each other, "Hidup, Iskandar. Pray hard."

One of my friends was doing the whole political correctness gone mad thing when it got changed. I think that was *before* she found out she was into BDSM
Btw, this tweet is not an endorsement of social media apps that track & sell personal info; I'm just revelling in the fact that some non-showbiz public figures are pretty hot
@notCursedE
I don't think most of them actually believe she's trans. They just want to hurt the feelings of anyone who's associated with trans acceptance. Their brand is cruelty, and they're proud of it.
@EmmaTolkin
I was actually suspecting that it was gonna turn out to be useless and tainted w Covid & since action spans 24 hours there's no evidence I'm wrong
I was gonna boast about finishing my PhD thesis (a historical novel) or publishing 2 books I edited, but then I realised, nope.
I participated in a public protest for trans rights & all of us got off with only warnings from the police. That's what makes me f*cking proud.
@dicklevitating
By the way, Singapore has been a 1st world country since the 1980s and we're only JUST getting rid of our law. The Prime Minister announced it on Sunday night. Result of 15 years of our lobbying & constitutional challenges. Every country's activists have to find their own way
@nlbsingapore
You should be ashamed of yourself for propagating the racist myth that Singapore was only a "fishing village". Historians have shown that it's been serving as an entrepot port, a plantation, a shipbuilding centre, even in precolonial times. Please value precolonial history!
Another queer

thread for Pride Month 🏳️🌈🇸🇬🏳️⚧️, this time focused on queer women! 👩❤️👩
Btw, I’m not simply labelling this as “lesbian”, because many notable works here are written about or authored by bisexual folks. ❤️💜💙 There's also some overlap w trans & NB folks too
Super stoked to finally have a second short story published by
@clarkesworld

(It's inspired by the Chinese myth of Pan Gu / 盤古, but I didn't know where to signal that in the text!)

It's come to my attention that some of the individuals involved in this controversy are transphobic. So, for the record:
Trans women are women, trans men are men, and nonbinary people are valid.
They deserve protection and liberation, just like all the queer community.
@XiranJayZhao
You'd have better luck at the Orchard branch of Kinokuniya (which hosts events and is better than this) but there's no need to do a megacorp a favour
One of the most well-known YA novels w trans themes is by a Singaporean. The Black Tides of Heaven, by Neon Yang (2017) is an Asian-themed fantasy work set in a culture where no-one gets assigned a gender at birth. (Writing it helped Neon realise they're NB!)
@IsraelWarRoom
Also, Singaporeans don't like Israeli policies either? Sure, our government refuses to call this a genocide, but the average citizen understands that Palestineans are actually *people* & bombing hospitals is wrong?
@tonygoldmark
I know she's an overprivileged white girl whose conplicitness in kyriarchy goes unaddressed but I am so grateful that the movie decided to show us that people can be genuinely HAPPY for their friends becoming more successful than themselves
Discovered that under the hashtag

there are hardly any pics of actual SG lesbians (unlike the abundance of guys under

Anyway, check in with your friends. A *lot* of people are survivors of child abuse in its many forms. (Not just sexual!)
And if you have kids, make sure they're empowered to say no to *anyone* who makes them uncomfortable.
Let's build a culture of care, not fear.
If you're a Singapore scholar (resident or studying SG), do consider signing this letter to Lianhe Zaobao taking it to task over its editorial blaming racist incidents on the rise of Critical Race Theory ✊
@geshi2samatai
Children are most in danger in an authoritarian, conservative society where they are unable to report the abuse they are suffering.
If you claim you're fighting against child abuse, you need to make sure you're building a culture that's based on care, not fear.
I mean sure I love elephants but I find it kinda sus that (Western & 1st world) folks are more inclined to empathise with them than a 60 year old rural Indian woman that one of them murdered
@geshi2samatai
@sazki__
And though I'm very uncomfortable with the topic, she's telling the truth.
What matters is the harm you cause, not the harm you *may* cause. It's almost like calling all men rapists.
@geshi2samatai
I can't say I understand all the issues in this controversy.
But I do know that there is a long, dangerous tradition of justifying bigotry against queer people by accusing us of child abuse—which covers up the actual child abuse happening among us today.
(My father is singing the Raffles Institution anthem to the twins)
Dad: 🎵Auspicium melioris aevi...🎶
Me: So, uh, you know, folks are talking about tearing down the Raffles statue.
Dad: (grabs twins feet) Yes! Let's tear down the statue together!!!
(It's become pretty depressing. It's clear Iskandar means he doesn't understand how to challenge the obvious systemic injustice of how they're being barred to access to lawyers.
& Menon is just saying you have to stick to the letter of the law, not its spirit.)
My essay for Strange Horizons' Southeast Asia issue is out!
It's titled, "A Spicepunk Manifesto: Towards a Critical Movement of Southeast Asian Heritage-Based SFF".

And I felt ashamed, that we dare to act so high & mighty when the most powerful among us can conceive no notion of mercy, of humanity, of respect for the poorest of us struggling to survive.
One might look upon this appalling monstrosity and ask...why black and white?
"No, seriously," you might ask, "what the hell does drab colorlessness have to do with being heterosexual?"
The answer, of course, is nothing.
There is no thematic connection whatsoever.
I saw
@Kokilaparvathi
from
@tjc_singapore
calling folks in Malaysia to inform them of the outcome, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Is this why cameras and recording devices aren't allowed in the Supreme Court? So no-one sees the real impact of the laws they cherish?
@geshi2samatai
From what I understand,
@sazki__
has been harassed for emphasising that there's a difference between child abusers & people with pedophilic tendencies.
Just a reminder that even though sex work is supposedly legal in Singapore, sex workers (including transgender friends) are still subject to violent police raids.
Today is Police Day, & 200 years since the

Also recalling what a friend told me about the closure of NYU Tisch-Asia: once Democrats get elected into office, they summon all their cronies from universities to serve in the government, & the Republicans/conservatives replace them
It's the final hours of Pride Month! I’ve already done a bunch of threads about the history of queer women & trans folks in

Now it’s time to tackle the elephant in the room: the topic of gay, bisexual & queer men 👨❤️💋👨

And as a Singaporean, I want a Malaysia that's so safe and equal that folks in my country here would *want* to join the union, just like in 1963. We're not a foreign people; we're a breakaway city-state
British women played major roles in Singapore as teachers & Christian missionaries & it's kinda insidious how we see it as 100% progressive rather than part of the colonial project
Judges have been added to the Zoom. Sundaresh Menon presiding. No photos or recordings allowed. They're going through the chronology now, explaining why the hearing is being held so urgently
UPDATE:
@iliyaizzudin
tells me that IndigNation's currently organising a conference in early 2023, about envisioning a queer future and more than just 377A. Contact them if you wanna help make more cool stuff happen!
The appellants speaking Tamil on Zoom are laughing, btw, and the few Tamil speakers waiting in the courtroom itself are cracking up.
(Damn, this is *literally* gallows humour.)
So the consensus is that I've done a bad take by calling
@PinkDotSG
"utopian". Yes, it feels that way to me, but that's because of my cis Chinese male privilege—as folks have pointed out, it does *not* feel that way to a lot of people in SG who identify as LGBT+.
A 🧵:
Iskandar is saying that Prison Services has used sustained deliberate delaying tactics which led to the last min application, therefore this is not an abuse of process. They actually approved the same docs on Mon which they refused earlier

Audience member: Is hip-hop like dikir barat? Because I listen to my Malay colleague's dikir barat at school...
Akeem Jahat: No. Dikir barat don't have MF Doom.
This is worrying—Ivan Lim is used in schools as a poster child for cyberbullying!!! It really shows that PAP didn't take everyday citizens' concerns about him seriously
Posts like these are a little disconcerting, especially if they suggest that school teachers are going to be rallied to warn their students of the bogeymen online.
