When I started this year of my PhD, I decided that if taking care of my mental health led to being kicked out of my program, I was okay with it. I'm now solidly committed to reading for fun and only at the cost of being a semester behind on reaching candidacy (for a few reasons)!

Months ago in a faculty meeting that I zoomed into as a grad rep, the chair of the Classical Studies department declared that there would be no department statement on the GEO strike. You know what we still don’t have? My department has shown how little it cares about grads.

@michigandaily Of all the fights to pick, putting a bunch of wrong information into an article (or written assignment, if you will) and then giving it to a bunch of grad students is an astoundingly foolish take when many of us correct this exact thing for our literal jobs. Do your dang homework

Hey Schlissel, come to my class and tell them that you have no regrets. My students have caught covid, stayed in hosting without pillows or amenities, written essays without internet, and dealt with horrific depression and anxiety because of decisions YOU made. Apologize to them.

At UMMA, a protestor was pepper sprayed and arrested when they failed to yield to police orders. I saw this happen, and I do not believe the police behavior was anything but appropriate.

In Classics, grad students weren’t invited to any of the events celebrating our graduating undergrads. We spent many hours working together in the library, so it hurts to not have been able to congratulate them, but I hope they see this plane and know we’re fighting for them!

Even though I should be used to it by now, I’ll never not be amazed when a faculty member says “oh I talked to the regents and they said actually they love students and would never use violence against them. It must be the assaulted students who are wrong!”

Y'all I taught my very first class today, and the other night I had a nightmare that a maintenance person came while I was teaching and came into my house, and I realized mid-class that there was a stranger in my house well GUESS WHAT HAPPENED IN REAL LIFE

Here's something damning about grad school: I admitted to my prelim advisor last week that I feel guilty when I do my prelim readings simply because I enjoy them. This program has stolen so much joy from me that when I'm interested in my research I feel guilty about it.

When I was on this panel with Reagan, I got to tell her how much we learned from her and her comrades when they talked about their pickets at @labornotes last year!!! Our fights affect each other, even in ways so simple as @geo3550 having dance parties on our picket lines ❤️✊

We also spoke w/ Reagan, one of the @stripstrikenoho dancers who went out on strike last year at Star Garden Topless Dive Bar in N. Hollywood. The dancers are fighting to unionize w/ @ActorsEquity , buy the club from current owners, & turn it into a unionized stripper co-op (!!)

Having great students makes such a big difference? Not that I've ever had bad students, but I had students hanging out in my office hour today just chilling, comparing Mark Antony & Cleopatra to Kim and Kanye, and trash talking rich people of all ages. Turns out I love teaching.

A big theme of the last 5 years of my life (grad school years) has been me being sad and ashamed that I don't have hobbies. So 2022 is my hobby year! I've started boxing, I'm reading for fun, and so help me I plan to finally keep a sourdough starter alive. What else should I try?

Is an extra Latin lesson worth a GSI going hungry because their pay is docked while you're paid to scab or losing their housing because you identified them as striking? What will students learn better? That last grammar before the summer or how cheaply you sold out grad students?
