The Hidden Queer Lives of William Shakespeare comes out in North America! I’m more proud and excited than I can say and hugely grateful to
@SealPress
@BasicBooks
and
@HachetteUS
. Here’s the skinny on STRAIGHT ACTING 🏳️🌈🎭🪶… (1/3)
I'm over the moon to be publishing Straight Acting: The Many Queer Lives of William Shakespeare with the fantastic
@SceptreBooks

Huge thanks to
@eleanorbirne
,
@pew_literary
, the marvels of
@The_Globe

STRAIGHT ACTING has a cover! I’m beyond thrilled - and even more delighted with this nifty preorder link. Go ahead, treat yourself and get a surprise package on June 13: 😀🌈🎉
Ten years ago, at the start of my PhD, I left the archive at the end of the day to go for a drink with someone I’d never met. Reader, I married him (not that night, that would have been weird).
Oh do fuck off
@Telegraph
with your racism, ableism and frankly embarrassing clickbaitism.
@NadiaNadarajah
is a profoundly good actor whose image belongs nowhere in this story. And Shakespeare belongs to everyone.
Shortly before CoronaCrisis,
@DrFarahKC
was made *Professor* after nearly 16 years leading research and higher education
@The_Globe
and we didn’t get a chance to mark it. So - to Farah. 🥂
It’s been such a terrible few weeks, and I’ve been too sunk in despair about the fate of a world I adore even to tweet, but this pic of my beloved colleagues and members of HM government looking like the cast of a news slice-of-office-life sit com has cheered me up. A bit. ❤️⭕️
📖🏳️🌈STRAIGHT ACTING🏳️🌈📖 is here and (nearly!) in the shops. Out 2 weeks from today: the first general readership book about Shakespeare’s queer life and work.
It’s publication day for
#StraightActing
The Many Queer Lives of William Shakespeare! 🏳️🌈🎭🪶Get it here, as they say:
(And in all good bookshops)
I’ve loved writing this book, and it’s something I’ve wanted to do for twenty years. Here’s the buzz: (🧵)
Happy Pride from our cast of
#AMidsummerNightsDream
💙
And as we head to
@PrideInLondon
to celebrate with you all, they’ll be sending their love from onstage too!
Yesterday was a pretty ace day, and today wasn’t bad either as I got to introduce this creature to my friends

📣Job klaxon📣 (and this time it’s personal).
@The_Globe
is looking for a f/t Teaching & Research Fellow to join our Higher Education & Research team. All details below👇🏼 and we can’t wait to hear from you. Happy holidays!
Loving Alan Cumming as James I in
@bbcdoctorwho
! His portrayal gets top marks so far: he has an eye for the boys and he’s a raging misogynist! Gold star for historical accuracy ⭐️
Back at
@The_Globe
with dear friend and film crew ❤️⭕️ 🎥 (stayed tuned on our new Higher Education webpages for a spills-all In Convo with Blanche McIntyre)
I could not be prouder of
@ProfFarahKC
or more thrilled for her on this very deserved honour, but seeing the news in all its glory also makes me realise she will actually be leaving
@The_Globe
, which we haven't even BEGUN to process.
@FolgerLibrary
are so lucky to have her.
We are delighted to announce that Professor Farah Karim-Cooper (
@ProfFarahKC
) will become the Director of the Folger Shakespeare Library (
@FolgerLibrary
).
For the past two decades she has dedicated her expertise to our beloved wooden 'O' ❤️
I woke up 39 today but I’m totally cool about advancing middle age because this Spanish cleric can do austere gravity *and* have a pug with a massive scarlet bow.
Somehow it's only a month until the publication of STRAIGHT ACTING: THE MANY QUEER LIVES OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE by
@SceptreBooks
. And even more excitingly, I'm taking it on the road in June and July to the very best bookshops in Britain... 🧵
It’s the first day of LGBT+ History Month! So here’s a sneak peak of the contents page of Straight Acting: The Many Queer Lives of William Shakespeare, out in June! 🌈📚🥳
Tell your kids!
@The_Globe
have let me do an 'ethical TikTok' (I have no idea if these are going on TikTok) on all sorts of Shakespeare topics. They're short! They're accurate (I hope)! They come with 'further reading'!
🔥 How did the Globe burn down?

Very pleased to announce that 'Playing Indoors', my book about
@The_Globe
's

, will be out in paperback in March with
@Ardenpublisher
! That's the inside skinny on the SWP *and* 8 colour plates for a mere twenty quid
Leaving aside the memes for the moment, exemplary work from (the actual) Jackie Weaver in taking the fuss in good humour and deftly using her platform to promote good local governance. A class act.
Yes, it's Jackie Weaver, star of that Handforth Parish Council Planning & Environment Committee meeting, on
@BBCWomansHour
.
She talked with
@ItsAnitaRani
about bullying and getting people involved with local democracy. The interview is on
@BBCSounds
What a gorgeous day celebrating
#Pride
and the glorious queer heart of Shakespeare and
@The_Globe
. And we *might* have mentioned to, oh, about one million people the amazing I, Joan by Charlie Josephine that lands with a bang in August…
Not shown: a large and appreciative audience for ‘Shakespeare’s Many Queer Lives’
@The_Globe
last night. Huge thanks to
@allenbratton
for bringing us his HENRY HENRY, and to
@OldFortunatus
for putting us both through our paces 🏳️🌈📚

@ProfFarahKC

@The_Globe
with banners, creepy uplighters, simply barrels of prosecco and a dazzling author interview on stage in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse by
@kikibaby79
. An excellent night.
It's all too thrilling - my book on performance in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse
@The_Globe
is out with
@Ardenpublisher
in February next year. Doesn't it have a RAVISHING cover?
Job klaxon: the Research team
@The_Globe
is hiring! We're recruiting up to three p/t paid research assistants to work for 6 months from Feb-Aug. MA or higher degree a must, can be currently studying. More info here!
She didn’t ask for the If I Could Turn Back Time backdrop but
@ProfFarahKC
gave such a moving and inspiring presidential address as she passed the baton on to Bernadette Andrea. Brava Farah! 🔥

Not only is
@BCDreyer
’s English funnier than a writing guide has any right to be, but this subheading made me squawk in the middle of Logan International Aiport.
I *may* have mentioned I have a book out soon (ahem, out in North America 17 Sept) and US readers can nip in quick to get 25% off through the lovely people at Barnes & Noble

Thought I'd freshen up my email subscription habits with a new empowering sign off, and I have just sent someone 'courageous thighs'. My courageous *thoughts* sadly didn't make it.
🎉🥂🤩 This is amazing -
@ProfFarahKC
is the first UK scholar to hold the post of VP of SAA (
@SAAupdates
)! Not to mention the first scholar based in a theatre and the first of south Asian heritage! ✊🏾
Some celebratory news for your Wednesday! 🎉
We're absolutely delighted for our very own
@ProfFarahKC
, who has been elected Vice-President of The Shakespeare Association of America.
Here's to an exciting couple of years working with our Shakespeare friends across the pond!
And it was a gorgeous and moving ceremony this afternoon
@the_globe
, as trustee Iraj Ispahani led our annual memorial, Globe Remembers, and bestowed a very swish trophy on the irreplaceably brilliant FKC
We are delighted to announce that Professor Farah Karim-Cooper has won the 2024 Sam Wanamaker Award ❤️
This is in recognition of her 20 years’ service to the Globe, bringing us world-class research, thought-leadership, and unparallelled dedication to Shakespeare.

And a word for future readers - everyone who buys the book when it’s out ALSO gets a council tax rebate!!*

It was such a pleasure to be part of the judging panel for this year's
@The_Globe
book award. There were so many exemplary submissions and it was almost impossibly difficult to pick a shortlist of four, but our shortlisted authors really have done marvels. Well done to all!
We're thrilled to reveal the shortlist for the Shakespeare's Globe Book Award 2020, which celebrates emerging scholars' work in Shakespeare Studies.
🎉Congrats to:

Amid the hurly-burly of this autumn something absolutely amazing happened: the simply smashing
@_jjedwards
was awarded a 5 year fellowship in English
@QueensCollegeOx
which means we
@The_Globe
had to say a tear-sodden goodbye to her. Lucky, lucky Oxford.
I present the best and most lyrically-written account of

@_jjedwards
writes like a dream and captures all the productive inattention that can swirl during a Globe show … /1
Fancy joining the

I’ve spent
#Pride
indoors, a heat prisoner, windows open, curtains down, watching the dog listlessly suck an ice cube. But I give grateful thanks to the heroes who fought for my right to proudly collapse in my very gay home. 🌈🌈🌈
I love showing VIPs
@The_Globe
- yesterday my godson dropped in to tell me all about his recent radical reinterpretation of Puck, performed solo after his Oberon came down with a sick bug.
Can the
@guardian
*please* stop running these non-stories. The only thing worse than the ‘Shakespeare was the only 16thC person ever to read a book’ argument is the ‘Shakespeare wasn’t Shakespeare’ one, and this somehow includes both.
Tune in to
@BBCFrontRow
tonight from 7.15 on
@BBCRadio4
, when my sprawling responses to Antonia Quirke’s excellent questions will have become a taut little package! Just like my book! Just like - oh do grow up.

Can orphaned schoolboy Kay Harker fight to save Christmas?

I know of course that this is the right thing to do. But I’m heartbroken for my colleagues and friends
@The_Globe
and at theatres across the UK. If you can, please consider donating the cost of cancelled theatre tickets to these organisations.
Following the UK Government and Society of London Theatre's official guidance, performances in the Globe Theatre and Sam Wanamaker Playhouse are cancelled, and are not going ahead until further notice.
In precisely one month
#StraightActing
hits the US and Canada with a subtle title change and a super-stylish grisaille backdrop. Thank you all
@SealPress
and
@BasicBooks
and I can’t wait to unleash Shakespeare’s hidden queer lives in North America!
I’m seriously in awe of how my
@The_Globe

It’s actually magical how cheering are

last night! Bravo for Pride In Writing & a huge thank you to the audience & my fellow guests including Theo Gordon & Flora Dunster (their book is GORGEOUS). Anyway:
#StraightActing
arrives in a week!
Judith Kerr wrote some of the most important books in my reading life: The Tiger Who Came To Tea, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, The Other Way Around, A Small Person Far Away. An astonishing, powerful, inspiring writer. She was the best sort of person.
This is completely enthralling and I think the most moving thing is the look of wariness on the face of some of the men at the presence of a film crew in a gay bar in 1969.
I’ve got a new talisman to help me with the final push for STRAIGHT ACTING - a print of the exquisite Elizabethan Man by
@LukeEdwardHall
